Most MTS videos are just show demonstrations that do not teach a lot. This video is more. We explain exactly how to use it correctly and when not to use it.
Here are some tech notes on MTS:
• Multi-Terrain Select (MTS). It is very different than A-TRAC. A-TRAC is a tool that works best helping you accelerate from a dead stop by using brakes to stop wheel spin. MTS can do that as well but it is also a system that is designed for active driving.
• Multi-Terrain Select regulates the amount of wheel-spin by adjusting throttle performance and brake pressure. Note that I said “throttle performance” and brakes. A-TRAC only uses brake pressure. MTS uses both brake pressure and throttle.
• A good way to think about it is that A-TRAC wants to eliminate wheel spin so you can accelerate from a stop. MTS, on the other hand, will allow different amounts of wheel spin based on the conditions you are actively driving in. So, for example, in sand or mud some wheel spin can be good. When rock crawling, you want virtually no wheel spin.
• Here’s how MTS works. You can select between four terrain types: (1) Mud & Sand, (2) Loose Rock, (3) Mogul, and (4) Rock. The first setting allows the most wheel spin and as you move through them up to Rock, it allows almost no wheel spin.
• Some features of MTS work in both 4L and 4H. You can use all the MTS terrain types in 4L. In fact, Loose Rock, Mogul and Rock can only be used in 4L. They will not work in 4H. The Mud & Sand setting is the only one that can be used in 4H as well as 4L.
• You can activate MTS while driving but only at speeds below 7 mph. In fact, if you are using MTS in 4L and you exceed 7 mph, the MTS features will not activate.
We've tried to get it right in this video. If there is any incorrect information, please let us know. Cheers and have fun out there!

Ubiquitous disclaimer: We are not automotive engineers. In this video, we share our view points. It is not instructional in nature and is not intended to be relied upon. Please do your own research and drive safe!
PLEASE NOTE: If you have watched our A-TRAC video, you do not need to watch this video. This is a repeat of the A-TRAC video so people that are searching for MTS can find the content.
Please Note: Tacoma cannot operate MTSin 4H. However, 4Runner can operate MTS in 4H as explained below. The Tacoma manual states: "The Multi-terrain Select can be operated when ●The four-wheel drive control switch is in “4L” position."
So, Tacoma cannot operate MTS in 4H, not even in the Mud&Sand setting.
However, the 4Runner manual is different. It states: "Multi-terrain Select can be activated when
● Vehicle speed is approximately 7 mph (12 km/h) or less.
● MUD & SAND: The front-wheel drive control lever is in L4 or H4.
LOOSE ROCK, MOGUL and ROCK: The front-wheel drive control lever is in L4."
So, yes the 4Runner can operate MTS Mud&Sand setting in 4H.

I just brought my new 4runner home a few days ago. I was searching KZbin for instructional videos about the various 4-wheel drive controls in the vehicle and came across your channel. It's one thing to know which button does what, and quite another to understand you would want to use that button. I am learning the from you. You are an outstanding teacher. Toyota should commission you to make a series of videos to augment (replace?) their manuals. I am working my way through your past videos and look forward to your next production. I owned three older (now) 4Runners and I liked them. They did not have any modern off-road tools that the new ones offer. Great video and excellent explanation. Makes me wonder though. Judging by how little information there is in the manual, my guess is that Toyota doesn’t really expect the people who buy these to really use them as they were designed. Add to that the stupendous amount of misinformation and downright bullshit on forums, and the difference between the quantity of vehicles you see on the street vs the quantity you see in the wilds, I’d say it’s a reasonable assumption. When I bought my first 4Runner, I asked the guy who’d had it for 100,000 miles questions about the various 4WD features, he said he’d never used them so he didn’t know. Seriously. Dude, if I didn’t want to get to places where I needed this, I’d buy a Prius. I don’t love getting 17 MPG.

Thanks! You bring up some good points. My guess is that it is only a very small percentage of 4Runner owners that actually use them off-road. And as you point out, it is definitely difficult to find good information on A-TRAC and MTS systems.

I drove the 2022 Tundra today, and was impressed with it. The ATRAC seems to be pretty good at getting you unstuck from sand, which we have a lot of down here in Biloxi, MS. I dont think the new Tundra comes with ATRAC, only MTS. Will I be losing a lot of capability by only having MTS vs ATRAC? Thank you, love your videos as they have explained both of them much better than any other video that I have ever seen.
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The systems do have a fair amount of overlap in their capabilities. A-TRAC is the preferred system when it comes to starting from a dead stop. MTS is the preferred system when it comes to active driving. However, MTS can certainly get you going from a dead stop. MTS does not have that cool get-you-out-of-the-sand feature but if I had to pick just one system, for me it would be MTS.

Can you comment on when to use the locking differential...thanks
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW Жыл бұрын
Locking differentials are used when one wheel on an axle has little or no traction compared to the other wheel on the same axle. However, it is not that simple. There are a lot of other considerations such as speed limitations, going around turns/corners, off-camber issues, etc. It is also best to engage them only when you need them and disengage them when you don't need them. I have the factory locker on my rear axle and an ARB air locker on my front axle. They are what I use. The MTS/A-TRAC features are great systems for what they are. But, for me, I consider them a backup.

I'm new to toyota and just learning the system. So in level of capability is it: First plain 4wd, then add MTS, if slipping try adding low range then with ATRAC, then lastly use the rear locker...and then the winch?
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW 11 ай бұрын
The terrain and circumstances you find yourself in will alway dictate the sequence. You may start with 4WH or 4WL. So, for example, if I roll up to a rock garden I usually go 4WL. When choosing between Atrac and MTS, I like to think of Atrac as a system to get you started from a dead stop. MTS is more of an active driving system. Both are designed for very low speeds. Atrac will automatically deactivate if you exceed 4 mph. It reactivates again when you go below that speed. MTS deactivates at speeds above about 7 mph and reactivates when you go below that speed again. Hope that helps. Cheers!

@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct and it works great, But keep in mind that the MTS system only functions at speeds of about 7 mph or less. Toyota did not like the idea of breaks being auto applied at speeds higher than that.

@steve9348 Жыл бұрын
@@OverlandPNWyou mean crawl control^ ?
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW Жыл бұрын
@@steve9348 Nope. We were talking about MTS. The Crawl Control feature is similar but a little different. Crawl Control works with vehicle speeds as low as one mph and as high as five mph. Per the manual, the one-mph speed setting is for rock, mogul, and gravel driving downhill. The two-mph setting can be used for those terrain features and climbing mogul terrain going uphill. The three-, four-, and five-mph settings help conquer snow, mud, sand, dirt, and grass and uphill gravel and mogul terrain. Crawl control shouldn't be used for long periods or over long distances. Its primary purpose is to help drivers navigate challenging terrain over short distances. To that end, Toyota has limited the amount of time that Crawl Control can be used to 12 minutes of continuous operation. If the vehicle exceeds set speed parameters while Crawl Control is active, the system will temporarily deactivate.

@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't been able to find an authoritative source that gives a conclusive answer to that question. The references in Toyota materials suggest it is in that same ballpark. Also, per the manual, MTS can be selected while the vehicle is moving so long as vehicle speed is "approximately 7 mph or less." So, while I don't have a conclusive answer, it appears to be in that same 7 mph approximate speed range. This makes sense since MTS applies brakes, and the application of brakes at higher speeds could become a safety issue. Some people just leave it on and let it activate as needed when they are within the operating speed parameters. I haven't seen anything from Toyota one way or the other on whether it is ok to do that. However, one thing to be aware of is that MTS will automatically cancel itself when the brake actuator gets too hot and is at risk of overheating. Hope that helps. Cheers!

Another great explanatory video. Thanks. But it seems to me that both systems are severely limited. Lets jsut say, I'm used to Land Rover's systems, the first traction controls, WABCO C were not that great, 15mph and only on the rear axle - in 1994. The WABCO D, however was a massive improvement, full traction control to 100km/h, 62mph! (most still only work to 15mph! 😞 ) That means you could point your 2 1/4t 1999 Range Rover P38 at a hill and just ease the throttle up and it just works. Where you'd normally need the run up, it doesn't. The Freelander (LR2) is better, it doesn't have low range, but in a auto doesn't need it. Evoque, better.... I don't think I need to go one there... So Toyota is way behind, why have 2 systems when you only need one? Atrac seems to be a basic ETC (Electronic Traction Control) System, the MTS is a different, more like an early LR Terrain Response, ie a D3 (LR3) or Freelander 2 (2006) but without the need for the low box restraints. Why choose what you might need in a particular gear set when actually, it should work in all. The MTS should be what LR's Terrain Response is, or close to it. It also seems that the MTS has a lot of constraints, it should work in all gears at all reasonable speeds in all modes. Maybe that is why a lot of Toyotas have lockers?

Crawl control is the best for steep downhill. Crawl control was not discussed in this video but we are working on a video that discusses crawl control.

That is what I am using, the only problem I experienced was sudden braking when slowing down for rough points when the system was disengaged due to speed higher than ~8 km/h.
@OverlandPNW
@OverlandPNW 2 жыл бұрын
@@tomaszwwysokinski9236 Hmmm...sounds like you were on a seriously steep hill. What speed setting were you using? For downhill, the only recommended crawl control speed settings are Low and the setting In-between Low and Medium (not Medium). A couple of other considerations: (1) Toyota acknowledges that crawl control many not operate correctly on extremely steep inclines, (2) Crawl control has an automatic system cancelation when the brakes overheat. This can happen on steep downhills (3) Toyota has limited the amount of time that Crawl Control can be used to 12 minutes of continuous operation. It is definitely not a perfect system and steep downhills can be very challenging for it.

It all depends on your driving style. The three traction systems (Crawl Control, A-TRAC, and MTS) are designed for different things. A-TRAC is a system that is designed to get you going from a dead stop. It is not designed to be used as a constant driving application. It only works up to 4 mph and will automatically deactivate at speeds above 4 mph. MTS is the active driving application. It is a more robust system and is designed for driving through longer obstacles. However, it is not meant to be activated and left on all day. It will work up to 7 mph before it automatically deactivates. All three systems will automatically deactivate if the brake actuator overheats due to extended use. So, if you like doing longer, more difficult obstacles you may like MTS. It does, however, come down to personal choice. Some drivers don't like modern traction control systems and prefer to rely on their personal driving skill. That's fine too. I hope that answers your question.

@@OverlandPNW The GX has a special place in my heart as it was really what I wanted to build out for my Mom when her Jeep Grand Cherokee died back in 2016. It was the perfect time to get the GXs as they were just starting to be appreciated and were consequently a great value. My Mom sleeps in her rig and needs a truck that can convert to a 4 seater when she arrives at her destination and wants to take grandkids around. The tumble forward design of the GX seats was just too much of an obstruction and we would have had to remove the 60% side. Additionally, I don't care for a swingate. They are harder to access and don't give you the advantage of protection from the weather, be it rain, sun or snow. I'm too lazy to want to have to deploy an awning every single time I want cover. Those things are minor though. They are great looking vehicles and I appreciate their narrower profile.

Terrific information. However, when you add it all up. Crawl control, MTS and all its modes, Rear Locker, ATRAC, L4 and H4, it can be a little confusing when to use what, and when not to. The Owners Manual specifies special criteria for all of these tools but it's going to be tough to remember when to engage the proper setting, particularly at a moments notice. Someone (maybe you, sir) should publish a small, but precise situational pocket-guide.

I just watched your video "Mark Twain Mafia Rock Crawl." Awesome video! Those rock step-ups towards the end looked fun. I left a comment, gave it a thumbs up, and subbed to your channel. I do appreciate your criticism because you are a legit off-roader and the comment you left is not coming from an anonymous channel with no content. So, I will explain. When I published this video I knew there was a risk that some people would not like that it had the same content as the A-TRAC video but I wanted to make sure that people searching KZbin for MTS info could find my MTS content. So, my apologies if you did not like it. No worries about the thumbs down. You are correct, it is a repeat of the A-TRAC video. I tried to fully disclose this in the introdution. Please see 1:01 where I state that if you have seen our A-TRAC video, you do not need to watch this video. Please see generally 0:41 through 1:19 where I explain that it is the same video but published with a different thumbnail so that people who are searching for MTS (as opposed to A-TRAC) will be able to find the content. Please see 0:58 where I explain that you need to know both systems to know when to use one and not the other. That is why both videos contain a comprehensive explanation of both MTS and A-TRAC. Please see 1:18 where I explain that everything in the video is time indexed. So, if you prefer to just watch the MTS content it is easy to jump to it. I also explained in the Description that this video is a repeat and that you do not need to watch it if you have watched the A-TRAC video. Cheers!
