I just did the swap last month. I looked at those same batteries but ended going with 2 FOIIOE VESTWOODS VC 12300 Plus $629.00 Ea. for a total of 600AH. I have 1600 watts flat mounted on the roof and went 5 days without the generator in Quartzite, they shut down before making it 6 days. The drive back to Phoenix gave me 100% SOC. No problem running the microwave, hair dryer or air fryer, one at a time. I programed a lithium profile and now working on a Lithium Battery Isolation Manager and a DC/DC charger. There is a lot to doing the changeover but very doable for a DIY'er. Thanks for all your videos, you are my goto guy before I star my projects in most cases.

Filter fabric taped over the box vents to keep the fine dust out. It looks so fine that it will creep into every nook of the circuit boards inside the box. I wonder if you could mount it inside under a cabinet to keep it safe from the elements and thieves. It is more of an electronic device like a T.V. than a rugged AGM battery. Good job. Lifepo4 is the way to go. When I did my safari. I replaced the inverter to get 85 amps charging and to be lifepo4 friendly. I also had to ditch the battery isolator charger and install a DC to DC charger. As a 200ah lifepo4 will take 200 amps if it wants it( potential alternator overheat problem) I used a renogy 40amp dc to dc charger. In addition to 200 watts solar it was great. Now in a ventana with 600 watts solar and 400ah lifepo4. All is working great!

I've worked in the UPS industry for 22 years now and the failure rate on Lifepo4 is just ridiculously low. More often then not its something like a bad lug that breaks during install rather than a "bad battery". Update to my install. After installing the Vatrer 460 and the victron Dc-dc charger, I called Magnum and they were very helpful in guiding me to the best setting with the equipment I was working with my ms2012 inverter/charger built in 3rd qtr 2018. (LBCO 11.5, chg rate 80%, breaker 30, watts off). He also had me reset the inverter. All seemed to be working well. I started the generator and I could see amps moving from the inverter to the house battery. I could also see it on the Vatrer app on my phone. With the gen off, I started the engine and my Dc-Dc charger was pushing 23 amps to the battery. ( my battery arrived at 53% from Vatrer). I was able to get the % up to 62% just running the engine or the gen while I was puttering around the rig in my storage space over (stop and go over a couple of days). We took a 3 hour trip to a campground in Memphis and spent two nights plugged into 50 amp. When we arrived, we had 78% battery (Dc-Dc chg). When we were leaving the campground, the battery was only at 43% and there was no activity between the charger and the battery. I don’t understand why the battery would not at least stayed at 78% while I was hooked to 50 amp shore power. I recognize that the 12 volt gear runs off the battery, but shouldn’t the charger have replaced what I was using out of the battery? Should I buy a lithium charger for $200 and charge the battery from that while hooked to shore power? I’ve seen one with a pos/neg pigtail plug that you attach to the batt terms and you plug it into the charger and that into a 120 outlet. I don’t really want to invest in a new magnum inverter at $1800 or more. I really like your solution with this batt but I am not sure if this issue can be helped by something else. Have you had this issue? Thank You. V/R, Glenn Lang
@DoRC9 ай бұрын
One thing that I'm not sure you mentioned that's really important for people to know is that you have to have a charging system that can actually support a lithium iron phosphate battery. Standard lead acid battery charging systems will only charge these to around 50% so if you don't already have a system that can handle it you'll have to upgrade in order to fully charge them.
@albertodelaiglesia92759 ай бұрын
Nope the BMS takes care of that
@DoRC9 ай бұрын
@@albertodelaiglesia9275 not true. The BMS is capable of stopping charging in an overcharge event but the BMS can't increase the charge voltage to the cells. The problem is that the lead acid charging algorithm will stop charging before the lithium ion phosphate battery is fully charged. The BMS can't do anything about that.
@davidfaris14229 ай бұрын
I think know what you have part 2. Inverter charger charging? 12volt alternator to 12volt house and chassie charging. Good on you James
@daviddevoucoux86619 ай бұрын
Not true. A good lead acid charging system will charge a lithium to about 80%. Most lithium manufacturers say the longest life for their batteries will come if you keep the SOC between 20%-80%. You only need a lithium charger to balance the cells once in a while. The lead acid chargers don't have a high enough voltage to do that. That said, a good lithium charger will be easier but you shouldn't let it charger above 80% if you want too get maximum life on battery. Geesh... that's like 10 years! So I f don't worry about it. Lol
@daviddevoucoux86619 ай бұрын
Forgot to mention. James... Make sure you check the charging current with engine running. With a low lithium battery, you could easily burn up your alternator if the wire size is large enough and the wire run from the engine alternator to the battery is short enough. Lithium batteries have very low resistance so they will accept as much current as they can get. Yours says it will accept a 200 amp charge? That could easily be far more than the alternator can give. Check charging current with lithium around 20% SOC. If it's high, get a DC to DC charger and put in line between the alternator and the battery.
@markmonroe73309 ай бұрын
Excellent presentation. Thank you. I am interested to see how the charging voltage is from both the generator in the RVs engine. It would be interesting to put a clamp meter on there to see how many amps they can send and if the battery overload them. Hopefully they can push 14.4v or more to the battery so that you can get a full charge.

James, I bought a $95 LIPo charger 14.6 volt, 20 amp. Hooked it up over night while plugged into 50 amp at campground. Took me from 86% at 13.3 volts to 100% and 14.3 volts. In addition, it balanced the cells. I will be doing this at least once a week while on the road. My Dc-dc keeps it charged during travel. I’m only getting a few amps out of the magnum. Still love your idea to use this vatrer battery.

If you Ever replace your power Inverter, you MUST connect a lead acid 12v battery to initialize the Inverter. Lithium batteries have so much current availability, It'll damage the Inverter. After you connect it to the Lead acid once, it's all good and you don't need to do it again. The Capacitors in the Inverter will hold some charge after initial connection and won't get damaged. My Solar guy Bill Burke ( winters in Quartzsite and does Solar install's) told me that. I've confirmed with Prosine and Xantrex. It's in the Installation Manual. And don't forget about adding the BMS charge controller off the Alternator, or you'll fry it . AZ Expert adds one in the next video.

It's not even really the 50% SOC max recommended depth of discharge that's the problem with lead acid, but rather the voltage. At 50% SOC, lead acid batteries are down to 12V. Take them any lower, and not only are you shortening your battery life, but at less than 12V, a lot of devices (like a large inverter) do not run happily. With Lithium (LiFePO4, LFP, Lithium-iron) the voltage at 50% SOC is about 12.8V, and you don't get down to 12V until you have discharged 95-98% of the SOC (depending on the amperage load). So LFP batteries are comfortable themselves when well below 50% SOC, and so are their loads!

Time to massively upgrade that, I'd go with 3 or 4 300-watt (or higher) panels, 36 volt or 42 volt or similar. Run those into an MPPT charge controller and never worry about power again. And never have to run that generator unless you're running air conditioning.

Yes, I upgraded to nearly 1000watts on the roof.

I am a bit disappointed that you didn't take the time to clean up your battery storage bay and try. This was the perfect opportunity to rehab that very important area of the coach. Guess you are more of a function over cosmetics guy. I'm not judging. I'm just surprised. I've owned 7 RV's going back to 1986. Aways took pride in keeping them in pristine condition. Before RV's we were into performance cars and boats - guess that is where these habits were developed. Enjoy your channel-always enjoy learning.

Just instal a piece of ply under the battery and add a canvas style battery heating pad that would get its power from the battery ;)

My lights are all 12v from battery charger. Why are your lights 110v ? I assume your inverter has its internal battery charger, so your battery is always connected to inverter. What happens if you bypass inverter; will battery charger operate 12v lights ? BTW, not good using start battery alternator to charge liths. Why do you need 120v from inverter ?

Li battery isolator needs to be installed. You can kill your alternator. Li BIM -225

Just a friendly tip…. Do not take that battery below 20% unless absolutely necessary and do not charge above 80% unless needed in the short term…. They live their best and longest life between 20% and 80%. Long term storage is best @50%…. Good Luck 👍🏼
