California (L.A.) city codes are pretty strict. They've had wind storms in the past where people's awnings have blown off their rooves and caused family feuds between neighbors. Then over the decades, cities (the more crowded the more rules) will step in and regulate roof structures. Check with V.B. or L.A. City hall for permits first.

For Shade: you need a wooden rod as wide as you want it but matching with the metal pillars you have on the ailing side. Sew a length of fabric round the rod (almost like you're attaching a flag- then run it so that it can attach on to the hooks on the pillars on the other side- you can reinforce the holes with metal studs that you can get from a diy shop or craft store so it will last longer. You'll also probably want a more durable heavier fabric if its for practicality.

See those bars on the rail that go up? Id suggest taking a sort of elastic-material-like tarp that lets a little light in and anchor it to the wall and stretch it over top so if it happens to rain youl be ok

Nice to see you settling down Louis! - I've owned a home for almost 5-years now and let me warn you that you need a permit for freaking everything... roof-top furniture, awnings, umbrellas and sails so please check your local laws. Also throwing things from a residential-balcony is a potential felony lol.

What city do you live in that you need a permit for a umbrella, highly doubt that one, for permanent structures of course a permit is needed but for moveable furniture like in the video or an umbrella a permit from the city is not needed it could be restricted by a neighborhood HOA but that is different
