I saw this in a packed cinema when it was originally released in 1979 (in the UK). One poor woman made it through the chest-burster scene but finally lost it when the Ash-head woke up on the table and gushed milk out of its mouth - she fled up the aisle and into the lobby, gagging and retching, and that was the last we saw of her! 🤮 Fun fact - I have actually worn the hands from the alien suit used in the movie. At the time I worked for a magazine publishing company that specialized in computing, electronics, and video titles. I was on the editorial staff of an electronics mag, and our sister title Video Today did a promotion when the VHS of Alien was released: the studio lent them some props, including the hands. Basically they are a stiff coarse-weave fabric glove with the alien skin moulded on in latex, there's a slit at each wrist to make them easier to slide your hands in, then you pull the edges of the slits tight around your wrist and close them with velcro. Movie magic!

9:25 As a fan of this film for over 40 years this is what I think- The "blue mist" shown before is actually a kind of "early warning sensor" much like when a spider feels something tugging on its web. This alerts the eggs that there is a possible host nearby. So the closest eggs to the host begin to "wake up." The most mature egg hatches/opens allowing the facehugger to strike. At least that's my humble take.

It was absolutely amazing to watch it upon release . Your reaction was excellent , and the scenes were clear and full screen ! I know the beginning set up is not a thing that current movies are good at . The audience wanting "immediate" action from the first frame . Probably due to the shorter attention spans of the younger generations. H.R. Giger designed the Alien and the "space jockey" . I would like to point out that Ridley Scott was the main reason this movie was made . He had a feeling for visuals and pacing . Though most people prefer "Aliens" ( the second movie which you will undoubtedly watch ) . I will always give the first movie the most credit . Thanks for your "Reaction ' !

Bit of a lore dump in addition to answering questions... this is set in the year 2122 and by this point humans have ventured, and colonized, up to 70 lightyears away from Earth. 2:37 Since leaving Thedus they've been traveling about 5 months. Thedus is about 60 lightyears from Earth and the Zeta II Reticuli are 39, so they were actually only about 1/3 into their trip back. 4:05 Aliens wouldn't have to know SOS specifically. It's a simple repeating signal, just enough to catch anyone's attention. Contractual obligations aside, the crew just draw the wrong conclusion about it. 4:20 What? 5:36 A rocky moon (later to be known as LV-426, "Acheron") orbiting a gas giant called Calpamos. 6:18 Maintaining contact with the outside crew isn't nothing. 9:34 Root-like tendrils at the base of the eggs trigger them to open when stimulated, like when someone is walking nearby. 10:22 No, that was Kane's helmet. 10:58 Not like panicking would get them anywhere. 11:04 No, it already came out of an egg LOL Keeping him alive while implanting an embryo, yes. 14:06 I always find it weird the subtitles change "Thedus" to "Datas". 15:50 For your procreation question you're not far off on the life cycle, all considered. 24:32 I'm actually glad you didn't immediately become suspicious of Ash like a lot of reactors. Through an objective lens his actions before being exposed are all pretty rational other than him just coming across as a non-people person. Anyway, Weyland-Yutani, the company the crew work for, likes to regularly use human-real androids for espionage and covert missions to promote their own goals. 27:32 It was blocking her only path to the shuttle so she was trying to give herself more time. 33:06 It wasn't milk leaking from Ash. Androids have a white liquid circulatory fluid that serves as their version of blood. Definitely watch Aliens. There's a small detail in the background of one of the scenes that, without being a spoiler, hints at why the company may have chosen the crew of the Nostromo for the mission to collect a specimen in the first one. Basically, projected dossiers about all the crew members reveal that they were all deficient in some regard or otherwise had a reason to be on the Weyland-Yutani shit list. Dallas had previously lost his pilot license for questionable judgement that led to losing a vessel. Kane had been a promising medical student until he dropped out of university, arguably squandering his potential by becoming a commercial flight officer. Lambert had only served on the Nostromo but she was already flagged in evaluations for severe anxiety issues and deemed unsuited for service with larger crews. Parker was given intelligence boosting medications by the company, but only put in mediocre effort in his work and had issues with authority. Brett was a former criminal, sponsored by WY for a work program. Like Parker, his skill evaluations never showed much improvement and his status would've been up for review if he made it back to Earth. Lastly, Ripley had a child and tried to have her contract terms adjusted so that she could spend more time at home. She was considered a troublemaker since she was forcing the issue into arbitration that also would've been decided when she got back. Her daughter, Amanda, is the player perspective in the game Alien: Isolation, which takes place 15 years after the "Nostromo Incident", in 2137.

4:53 The hull is a term used for the skin of any vessel. If it is a seagoing vessel and you breach the hull, then water rushes in and usually the ship sinks. On a spaceship, it lets all of the air inside the ship exit into space (which is in vacuum) explosively. If the ship is on a planet with pressure, there might not be explosive decompression but your air then mixes with the air of the planet, which can be really bad if the air has toxic properties or has no oxygen.

I remember having a numb right hand through most of this movie. The girl I was with had a DEATH grip on my arm. 😂 The 2nd one is good too, but it's more of an action movie. It doesn't have that same creepy, slow-burn vibe. I didn't care for the others after that.

Hope you enjoy this - you should check out the sequel 'Aliens' - which is a different genre - where Alien is a full-on Horror movie, 'Aliens' is not. If you do consider watching Alien though - make sure you watch the Directors cut - it contains a scene that is sort of core to Ripley's motivation in the movie - it's a crime it was removed by the studio (though the rest of stuff in the director's cut is kinda padding).

It kind of bugs me because the directors cut adds back some of Ripley’s motivation, but it also doesn’t build the suspense quite as well.

@@wackyvorlon Yup - I agree - they could just put that one particular scene near the beginning back in and that would have been perfect.

Nothing can match seeing this for the first time, when you're 14, in a dark theater with a big screen (very big by today's standards), without knowing anything about what happens.
