Something some people miss (not necessarily saying you did) is that Powder doesn't know who silco is when she jumps in to his arms. So it isn't like she's completely like, changing sides or anything, she's just clinging on to the first person she sees after her sister "abandons" her.

@@silver9wolf6I do. Vi was like 13-14 in act 1 so she should have acted more mature. Pretty much the entire mess that gets Vander killed was her fault for being needlessly reckless. I feel no sympathy for her and think her mental anguish at the knowledge of what powder became was fully deserved
@silver9wolf6
@silver9wolf6 6 ай бұрын
@jackgomez5894 Interesting. So you're saying because she pulled a hiest in the upper city in response to significant economic imbalance, to prove her ability, and disobeyed her father figure, that she deserved to have her brothers die around her, said father figure sacrifice himself for her, and live for the next five years imprisoned while beating herself up mentally and physically? I'm not saying Vi didn't make mistakes, I'm saying she's a kid who had pretty much everything going against her, and neither her nor Powder deserved the pain that they went through. Every kid wants to prove themselves to the people they look up toI have younger siblings who were recently 13/14. I don't expect them to have the emotional maturity not to lash out if they were in Vi's position because I don't expect anyone to have that level of control under those circumstances. Do you also blame Powder for trying to prove herself and fix everything? Since that's what Vi was trying to do too. Does she deserve to go crazy from regret and be haunted by her mistakes too?

@jackgomez5894 Yeah, Vi tends to be impulsive, but she's also a kid, and it doesn't seem like the hiest was very impulsive. Yeah with hindsight she may have been able to canvas the house and learn that the crystals were dangerous, but she also got the info from a trusted source, planned her route, and only got caught because of Powder. Also, when Vander points out her recklessness, she takes responsibility and tries to do better, a trait I find pretty mature

Silco was ready to kill Powder, and then she said 'she's not my sister' with that venom in her voice. You see him get that 1000 yard stare and you just know he flashed back to Vander. Then he stays his hand because he sees himself in this tiny blue-haired kid. The amount of storytelling that this show manages to pull off with voicework and facial expressions is incredible. Most writing teams can't depend on the animation team or voice actors to pull this sort of thing off, but it just works so well here.

Everyone in my 3d degree program was raving about this show when it first came out, even our professor/program director. That should’ve been enough to make me watch it, but i only just got around to it. And wow, I cannot believe how good the animation is. The facial animations are incredible; they’re so emotive and expressive, to an extent that i’ve only seen in absolute top-tier 2d animation. I held Spiderverse as my favorite 3d animated feature, but this one blows it away, even though it’s a series (credit to Spiderverse’ tho, it clearly was an influence for Arcane’s art style). Direction and cinematography are mind blowing too, a lot of the action scenes seem to take influence from anime, in the absolute best way. I could gush about this show all god damn day, and I’ve only watched it once. Can’t think of another animated show or movie that is firing on absolutely all cylinders like this; writing, directing, voice acting, lighting?? Sound design??? Fuckin insane.

What this show does with Powder is so amazing. The whole time Vi is dealing with that monster, we're all like, "Come on Powder. Get that thing in there." And then when it goes off and the consequences become clear, it becomes, "Oh no, you shouldn't have done that. They would have all gotten out if it weren't for that." Like we had most of the same information that Powder did and were right there with her with what needed to be done. It's only with hindsight that we can see her mistake just like her.

@@pennalopievalentine6604 It was a point tying back to the talk Vander had with Vi. He told her that the path she was on (using her fists to resolve her problems) was just going to make more problems, which he learned from experience having started the rebellion that ended in everyone being slaughtered on the bridge. After she hit powder and then looked at her hand she remembered what he had said, which brought her back to her senses. She doesn't have abusive tendencies, she has a violent disposition, but the fact that this is the first time she has ever been aggressive with Powder and realised right away what she was doing proves the point that she isn't abusive, because if she were she wouldn't have stopped.

This was an amazing surprise - I can't WAIT for part 2 now! This show is just incredible, and I am obsessed with seeing reactors discovering it for the first time. As for Powder turning on Vi, or giving up on Vi, that quickly, I think it is important to try and understand Powder's psychology. She has extreme fear of abandonment after the loss of their parents at the beginning of episode 1, and she has just suffered the biggest trauma imaginable via the realization that she accidentally got her "brothers" and her father figure killed in her attempt to help them, only to be blamed, attacked and then left by the only family left to her when she needed her the most. I think it is natural for her to feel betrayed, abandoned, angry, not to mention unfairly judged and misunderstood after what was said and done to her by her own sister. Further more, she seems to have some mental health issues and struggles that are not addressed, as I don't think that is even a possibility in the Undercity at all, so she may tend to be more extreme in her emotional outburst and her reactions than you might expect because of that as well. Don't get me wrong, Vi also just suffered an extreme trauma, and is herself still just a child despite having had to grow up faster than most, so I completely get and understand where Vi is coming from as well, and I am not saying she was in the wrong for freaking out and reacting so strongly to just having lost everyone except Powder, who was the cause of her loosing everyone else. She did the right thing by removing herself from the situation to calm down and avoid doing more damage to Powder physically or mentally by punching her or screaming at her any more than she had. She was obviously not intending to leave Powder forever and never come back, wasn't further away than she could still see her, and was ready to protect her the moment she saw danger approach... she just never got the chance to make anything right, or to talk to Powder about what she said and did, because Marcus decided to drug her and drag her away from the situation before she even had a chance to intervene and protect Powder. It was just a tragic situation with a heartbreaking outcome, where even though everyone did the best they could and had the best intentions everything still went horribly wrong. I don't think it is fair to blame either sister, or to judge them too harshly.

I think the other thing to keep in mind is the ages of the characters. While both are still kids, Vi has been around longer and has had more maturity to help her process things. Powder is a little girl. She definitely does not have an understanding on how the world works or how to process the events in front of her. And then she gets picked up by Silco. This series is so good with the concept of set up and pay off.

In the interviews they said that quite a lot was left on the cutting room floor to facilitate the pacing of the show. It would stand to reason that a fair bit of that content will be shown in S2, perhaps in flashbacks and such, and that content was made at least partially along S1, which means it was made in the same "head space". I bet S2 will be just as good as S1, S3 being a bit more of a gamble if they can keep the same stellar quality.

Fun fact about the ending scene of episode 3: the shot of Powder's eye through Silco's arms as she cries is a reference to a renaissance painting called Fallen Angel by Alexandre Cabanel which depicts Lucifer's banishment from heaven. I think it's safe to say that Powder was heavily traumatized by that day on the bridge when Vander led the underground against the Topsiders, even though Violet tried to protect her from seeing it. So, after losing her parents, she latched onto her sister to keep herself stable. She wants to be useful, and being told by Violet that she isn't ready, and then being left behind unable to do anything was really weighing on her emotionally. Seeing magic crystals and remembering what one caused the explosion, her first thought was that she could be useful, not about how dangerous that explosion was. So she made some modifications to the monkey and rushed over there to help. After she accidentally killed Mylo, Claggor and eventually Vander, and realized it, she immediately broke down again, and when her sister lashed out at her and left to cool down after hitting her- Vi was just leaving *her* in her eyes. And that broke her. Then when Silco came along and seemed concerned about her, she rushed to him for comfort, even if she knew who he was. I think Silco, in that moment when he heard that Violet had left Powder, felt a kinship with her, knowing the pain of betrayal from someone close to him. For Powder it was her actual sister, and for Silco it was Vander when he tried to kill him.

Except powder didn't know who silco was. She knew there were bad guys after her dad and her sister, but other than deckard and his goons or the enforcers she didn't see a thing. She hasn't seen silco once in her life at that point, and thus has no reason to fear him

The opening bridge scene in episode 1 has to be a record for the shortest amount of time a show has taken to make me cry. Without any spoken dialogue, knowledge of who the characters are, where the show was heading, or what was even happening, the combination of the music, animation style, character expressions, direction, and overall visual storytelling so overwhelmingly conveys a grand sense of tragedy, loss, and anger.

So excited for you to react to this show! Also, someone has probably already commented this, but I'm 99% sure Vander and Silco aren't actually brothers in the literal sense, just more in the "brothers in arms" kind of sense as they used to be close friends and fight together for the same cause and all that.

I just started rewatching this show again, it's so good. I remember when I first saw it listed on Netflix I was like "Pfft. League of Legends. Let's see how this is" going into it with low expectations. But damn, not only was the animation and world building so well done but the characters, performances, and plot so phenomenal. I feel like this show is slept on by wider audiences when it's one of the greatest animated tv shows to exist. I'm so looking forward to the second season, however long it takes.

@DarthRayj
@DarthRayj Жыл бұрын
Even as someone who did know quite a lot about League before watching it, it didn't diminish the impacts at all, and only gave slight hints at things that may or may not happen. It really does work just as well for people who don't know anything about the game, since it's all so character-driven and doesn't rely on nods at in-game stuff to function. There are still enough little background things that it's fun when you do know things though. I think the biggest single quality they had in making this show was the attention to detail. The cinematography was made to feel like live action, the music was incredible, there are tons of little details that they didn't *have* to include but elevate the show just that tiny bit closer to perfection; and most of all, the character writing, dialogue, and emotions are all done incredibly well. They also did a fantastic job embodying "show, don't tell" in the acting, the dialogue, the settings, the effects, everything. If they could tell you something with a single well-placed shot and one line instead of five lines of dialogue, they did. Heimerdinger's flashback is a great example: you don't need to know where or what exactly happened, you see what he saw and he says a couple brief lines and you understand that he is *haunted* by a devastating event and has been trying to make sure it can never happen again.

One thing you should remember while going forward is how Silco sees himself in Powder, she was betrayed by her sister and he was betrayed by his brother, the whole reason why he takes her in is that he sees her as the young version of himself, lost and alone. Just keep those parallels in mind

When this was airing, it was a big event with a party hosted by riot and they showed the premiere for everyone on twitch. Episode 1 was enough to blow people's minds with just the attention to detail, art, and the love that you could see the animators poured into it. The build up for each of the 3 acts (3 episodes) was insane and the community was begging for more each week, until the finale where they again, begged for more. People during episode 3 were crying their eyes out, me being one of them. While I and many fans have deep connections to these characters, it's really telling how well written and animated this show is to illicit some of those same powerful emotions for people that DON'T play the game or know the lore. Arcane's voice acting, animation, art, and just everything you can think of is just superb. Powder's VA pretty much nails it in every episode.
