Btw Tolstoy wrote himself: «My Anna (Tolstoy called his novella „Family Happiness“ as „Anna“), after I got to the countryside and reread it, turned out to be such a shameful rubbish that I can't come to my senses from shame and it seems I won't be writing anymore.» 😂😂

Hi Emma! I just want to say that I totally get your frustration and rant about “Family Happiness” but I have to say, as frustrating as it is, it saddens me that I personally know marriages like that still today and from people my age (34 yo), not in the age gap thing but in the dynamics of their relationship, man and woman roles and what brings them happiness. So I found it very insightful and truthful in a way that I feel like I know these people. I can’t stop thinking about it!

Hi Emma, to me Tolstoy was so true to himself and he was open minded. I felt he was stupid sometimes but he was so true to himself. He had puzzle, he was also confused. All of these puzzles, confusion and stupid can be found in his works.

I’ve not done food service. But I will say I think my personality suits retail better because I’ve worked retail stores where I care about what I’m supposed to sell, and I like helping people find what they like or need. Plus people can’t take out their frustrations on you by how they choose to tip you. But when they’re rude to you in retail, it feels way more personal, especially if you’re a people pleaser who’s just trying to help. I think we all have a million stories from working in service… and it certainly helps the wounds heal to know that others have experienced it too or had it worse! A video on it would be so fun.

Emmie... thus Tolstoy book... reflects his life... he did escape to a quiet country life and he was very very controlling and authoritative of his wife's actions. Its sounds like his reflections of his marriage and a letter to his wife.

I agree with your Tolstoy rant!! I loved the nature imagery 🌛and it had a lot of great quotes, but you're so right about Tolstoy's voice coming out in the characters to an extremely frustrating extent!! Also, this is from the introduction to my edition: "In 1856, after the death of her father, Tolstoy was appointed the tutor to a young woman named Valeriya Arseneva... he became deeply involved with her, but could not bring himself to marry her. 'I never loved her with real love,' he admitted later. 'I was carried away by the reprehensible desire to inspire love. This gave me a delight I had never before experienced.' His impeccable artistry and sensitive led him to imagine the story from the point of view of the young woman." So a 28 year old Tolstoy strings along a grieving teenager and is praised for "impeccable sensitivity" because he later thought about how his actions may have affected her?? Seriously??? And the story he writes based on these reflections is just his own beliefs on patriarchal domestic life told to his readers through a female character. Ahh!!

“This is the land of poetry and despair, but there is nobody to sing.” How I relate to this especially being Somali. A season of migration to the north is such a beautiful book especially growing up in a foreign country I’m able to see so many perspectives from my parents and uncles and aunts who were displaced from home and attempt to fit in. And my uncles and aunts back home who still cling to traditions despite the ruin of a war torn country. It’s so amazing having a book touch on such personal perspectives. If you love books along the lines of that I highly highly recommend “bless the daughter raised by a voice in her head” by warsan shire. It’s a poetry collection that touches on many themes including girlhood, family, racism, and trying to fit through a hole in society that doesn’t suit you. It’s honestly one of my fav books and I’m sure you’ll love it too!

An incredible read is Henri Troyat's biography of Tolstoy. It's like reading a Tolstoy novel, to be honest. The story you're discussing about the bored wife in the country and the trip to St. Petersburg and the jealousy of the husband is covered in this book---a true story involving Sonia and Leo. You know, I love Tolstoy's works. But, like so many of my favourite writers, including the one and only Charles Dickens, I'm less than impressed by his conduct during his life. There was nothing happy ever after about that relationship...

You make a good point about how Tolstoy intrudes his philosophy into the narratives and speaks with an authorial voice that sort of mitigates any potential for interpretation and ambiguity. But, there are also many contemporary books that speak with the same authoritative language but with differing messages. Part of Tolstoy's problem is that his philosophy is considered out of date which makes me wonder: If the book was written with a different philosophical leaning would you enjoy it more? Because from a technical standpoint, the same issues would remain even if the conclusion was that her husband decided upon listening to the wife and abiding by her dissatisfaction.
