I heard this philosophy like 25yrs ago.I took it in religiously .By then my net worth was at a minus 20k.I started walking the journey with small manageable baby steps but to the right direction. I think one of the fastest way to hit that retirement number is by putting cash in investments now and let it grow without withdrawals till the ideal retirement "number"/age

If it is just cashflow, and income then one can retire quite early by ensuring he gets sufficient inflows every month and some extra, live deep with his means earlier, while investing the surplus in a business, (because here stocks are not reliable), and within ten years he will have enough invested to ensure that income, while the business grows itself. That's a very smart & practical idea, Susan
