This episode first aired 10+ years ago, which is a lucky thing for Sam because he would have been eviscerated on social media and likely would have lost his job for the abusive behaviour he exhibited towards his wife. He showed how he not only emotionally and psychologically abused her, but also financially - financial abuse is a very real thing that isn’t talked about nearly enough. By making significantly less than her husband Stephanie felt like she couldn’t go at it alone - which is exactly what he wanted. He is a walking red flag and malignant narcissist. Men like this are dangerous. Imagine what he’s like behind closed doors when cameras aren’t rolling.

@@johannamiller527 I doubt it. Most of his severe asides were delivered when Gail wasn’t around. Like all bullies he picks weaker targets. What IS sad is that over the years he has ground her self-esteem down to nothing. There is no spark in her eyes. He couldn’t have done it if she had shown any backbone earlier in their relationship, but their roles now are too firmly entrenched. She will only escape by physically leaving him, and I can’t see that happening.

I would not be surprised if he has already hit her or threatened to hit her. She has been ridiculed and dominated because she only makes $20k/year. So, he has the final say. She can’t raise 4 kids on that a year by herself. Unfortunately, he seems like dead beat dad material. When you're forced to deal with a person that never thinks they're wrong and blames everyone but themselves for the problems in their lives, and also refuses to change, then you have to, HAVE TO! WALK AWAY! These types end up drowning in their problems before they deal with them, and they often grab onto anyone around them as they go down, taking those people down with them. It hurts to watch, especially if you're close with them. It's seriously painful medicine.

Krispy: I’d cancel the cable, turn off the phone, and let the car sit in our driveway for a month or two before turning to a payday loan company. I have yet to have it satisfactory explained to me why those loans are not considered usury. The fact that Sam’s brother has “helped” them financially before was not lost on me. Or the fact that Sam said, “I will not have my oldest son, I mean, my children, go without,” also spoke volumes. There are a tonne of weird vibes in that immediate/extended family

As a financial advisor, I hope everyone learns from this episode, especially if you are still searching for your mate. To achieve financial success in your family, you need good communication with your partner. This matters more than income made or the gifts they buy you or occupation they have. Without a commitment to positive, productive communication...you will face tough challenges as a couple. These situations can also lead to financial infedility and financial abuse. Even if you are the caregiver and not working, get involved or at minimum build a relationship with a good trustworthy financial advisor who will help mitigate these conversations. I've Gail Oxley for this! She's my inspiration. I've been watching her since childhood and read her books.

There was no way Gail was going to get through to them because like she said, the main issue was not the money but the relationship itself. I've always find myself surprised with people who fight so hard to hang on to something that, even to them, is broken. Like that relationship ran it's course and just like his need to keep up appearing with all the stuff he buys, that marriage is there to maintain an image. I really hope that she at least took Gail up on her offer for counseling. She cannot continue living in that environment. She has become completely compliant towards him and that is a true to shame for any person. This is truly the first time I was genuinely concerned for the safety of the spouse. Like i would not be surprised if he was physically abusive as well.

This includes your televisions, your screen projector, and anything of value. 3) You both (Stephanie and Sam) need to work extra jobs and work 80 hours a week, starting Now. 4) Stop going to payday lenders and getting cash advances because your spending more in interest. 5) Cut up the stupid credit cards and pay cash. 6) You’re going on a beans and rice, rice and beans diet and you’re not eating out unless you’re working at a restaurant and they provide you with a free meal.
