I have the same Slingerland 12" snare purchased during the 90s MusicYo era. Love that snare, but it weighs a ton! Great video! Now I know how to position the snare when I shift from matched to traditional.

I strangely angle mine a bit more then yours and angle it inward and to the left so sort of up on the right back side. That is right where my hands land for rim shots and I have mine a bit lower then yours and I am only matched grip. That 6.5”-12” Slingerland I didn’t know even existed sounds killer then again Slingerlnd’s are the best sounding snares to me.

I am also 5'7" and feel like the snare is too wide. What a great tip. now to look for a nice 12" snare....

Hi,, yes I know this is about snare angle but I’ve noticed your bass drum is quite a ways out from where you are sitting and your HI Hat stand is closer in,, I tend to sit closer to my bass drum and generally set up symmetrically i.e. bass drum pedal roughly as far out as my hi hat pedal,,, I’m Also now trying to learn to play heel up which as you know is a tough time….. I’m going to arrange my kit more like yours and see if that helps because the upper back of my right leg tires too much the way I am set up now when I try to play Heel Up…. Again thankyou for your videos,,, you are such a well rounded and fluid player that it’s impossible not to take every bit of advice you give seriously.

It all depends on your body type (height, leg length etc.). If you sit on the seat place your legs where they are most comfortable and start there. don't sit too high or low as this puts strain on your back. Also make sure your knee is not in front of your foot. It may help to take a lesson. Thanks Rick

@@rickdior Again Thankyou Rick-- I have taken lessons believe it or Not!! I studied for 5 years with Gene Stewart a local Detroit well known teacher who was mainly a Jazz player but also did recording work for MOtown along with Chet Forrest,, ( the two unmentioned and “unknown” white guys that regularly worked for Motown)- so a LONG time ago,,, late 60’s- mid seventies. I did play professionally around Detroit for several years but then moved on to other pursuits- however I never stopped practicing and have always had a kit around-- I’m semi retired now but still teach Iyengar Yoga via Zoom online-- and I now have more time to practice-- I truly appreciate the feedback from you and your well rounded approach-- I was surprised when I watched your Pedal vid, Bass drum and Hi Hat to find out that it seems you started with Rock!! That surprised me as I assumed you were originally a jazz player who’d branched out like we all hopefully do. I too was originally a Rock guy influenced first by Mitch Mitchell and other good Rock players,,, ( BJ Wilson the Procol Harum guy I liked a lot-- Studying with Gene of course opened up my Ears to Jazz and Roy Haynes and Tony etc etc etc.-- Ok,, I’ve gone on TOO long here,,, be well and thanks again.

I constantly switch grips not just for the song, but because of a little osteoarthritis in my left hand. It's such a simple great idea just to spin the snare drum around. I was wondering which snare drum stand you use to turn it without it loosening too much or dropping. Many thanks Iori
@rickdior2 жыл бұрын
Hi lori I use several different stands. Yamaha, Mapex, Sonor. Really anything with a basket that's not on a boom. I like the more lightweight snare stands. I do not make the basket stem rod bolt too tight so I am able to turn it easily. I find that with the heavy duty stands this is more difficult. Stay well Rick

@@rickdior Thank you for coming back. I have a Pearl & Yamaha snare stand. I start physio on my shoulder this week, consultant said should be able to try playing and driving by mid Dec. Hope you and your family are well too.

Snare looks deeper than 6.5. Optical illusion probably. Only 12" diameter.
