Bloody hell, you were out of work for four months. If that isnt age discrimination I dont know what is when you should be able to just walk our of a job and a Friday and into another on the next Monday/s. I am younger than you, I also work in finance and was out of work for 7 months in London no less a while back. Sometimes the job market is shit. I didn't turn to KZbin and have midlife public meltdown. Sometimes you just don't get the role because there are more suitable candidates out there - and its not always because they're younger and you're no spring chicken. You just have to deal with it and apply for something more suitable which you eventually clearly did. I will add that I am a finance contractor so I work on 6-12 month projects. That means I have to change jobs ever 6-12 months. I love it. I also have to ride the ups and downs of the job market so when times are hard then I have a bigger gaps between roles but I just deal with it and moderate my expectations. Anyway, I'm glad you found work I hope you can have some self reflection and see that your initial thoughts of being on the job scrap heap were just misguided or delusional.

No, that's just how it is. It's been that way for decades. Why do you think the younger generations are screaming? The market is being flooded with cheap labor and at the same time, it is not producing a lot of jobs.

So you say he’s no spring chicken and then say he’s delusional for having a midlife crisis on the internet. Those 2 statements contradict I suggest you proofread your comments beforehand.

Everyone interprets their situation differently. You seem to have a calmer view towards your months of unemployment. It's not possible to explain one's point of view but you can't blame others for having a different one. Fadetogrey got worried about being out of work after 4 months and took to youtube after perhaps trying everything else. That is absolutely fine as he wanted to know who else is facing his dilemma being near 60 and not having work despite years of hard earned skills. Further, recruitment agencies throw old people's cv's in the bin which is a known fact.

I plan to retire at the end of 2025 at 62 after 36 years in Telecom as a sales engineer. My wife will retire in May 2026 and she's loving life! But walking away from a good income stream and building the nest egg to living from the nest egg is a scary proposition couple with the alarming recession and CPI report

I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I'd suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

My advice: for newbies to grow financially this year, invest. Saving is good, but investing elevates your finances. Why newbie make huge losses on trade is because investing without proper guidance can lead to mistakes and losses. that will stop you from trading, this has been one of the biggest problem to new traders, I've learned this from my own experience

Well done! I am 57. About 6 weeks ago I answered an advert on Ebay small ads here in Germany for a part time free newspaper deliverer job. Quite a while back the snob in me would have said "No way" but I swallowed my pride and answered. I absolutely love it. Wednesday 10am there arrive 630 free newspapers and I have a map and a list of where not to deliver. It takes me a good day and a morning to get it done, my bike has "a basket a bell that rings and things to make it look good". Soon I will invest in a small trailer. I have delivered in extreme heat but this job will get me in fresh air in winter which is vital. You get paid to get exercise basically. I had only one delivery a week but while I was out there last week the boss rang and offered me the 2nd delivery of the week's circuit, so i am now at the maximum allowed. My boss is far away, only a virtual one really, I work exactly when I want and i get to gossip with neighbours. The rest of my time now i spend mountain biking the Alps or winter skiing. Stuff careers.

Congratulations! When you talked about the dwindling energy to keep doing what you did before, I can really concur. I'm 62, the career I worked in has left me behind which to be honest I really don't mind and was happy to finally stop clinging on and let go. It was high pressured and for the past 5 years it was getting more and more of a struggle to keep the enthusiasm or interest I had before. I wasn't enjoying it at all. 60 was a milestone birthday for me. My whole attitude to life changed, what was important changed, what I wanted changed. I now want an easy going part time job with no pressure, my first job was as a shelf packer in a supermarket, I'd be quite happy to return to that. Realising you have lived a lot more life than you have left is so sobering. I'm not depressed about that, I just want to take advantage of the health I presently have to appreciate other things. I don't need lots of money to do the simple things that give me pleasure now. I took on two allotments, side by side, which has transformed me and my mental and physical health has never been better. I'm starting to really enjoy life in full.

I drive lorries. One of the advantages of the job is young people don't want to do it and as a result the average age of lorry drivers in the UK is 55 years old. "You're over-qualified" is something you will never ever hear. A lot of people our age have served in the forces. For those who had who got a HGV licence it would be a good way to get some work. If you let the entitlement lapse because you didn't take your medical at age 45 all you have to do is take a D4 medical again to re-instate it. You'll need to do DCPC training to get a DQC card, you'll also need to get a digital tachograph card then you're good to go. Maybe take a day at a driver training school just to get back into it then sign up with an agency and off you go. There's plenty of agency work where drivers are booked daily so you could literally decide you just want to do a couple of days a week and find work for that.

I went self employed as a gardener (mainly lawns and hedge trimming) 15 years ago, after five years as an IT infrastructure contractor and a period of office based work. I don’t want to have to work as an employee ever again, my gym is my work and I get rainy days off, do about a three day week and manage my expectations accordingly. I’m always turning work away and turn sixty next year. I am slowly retraining myself to add a few more strings to my bow so that I can still be useful for the time when I can no longer lift my mower over walls, up steps and climb trees for the occasional pruning job.

Congratulations, Iam glad you got something sorted. As I know very well once you are over fifty in the UK you are written off by the majority of employers. I live in an area where most employers are complaining that they cannot find staff and shout about how much they are struggling but when you talk to them they openly tell you that they dont want anyone over fifty as they wont be able to manipulate or bully you like they will with younger people. Its a very broken country but I live in hope. All the best to you.

Congratulations! Wishing you all the best 🙏 I'm on my 60th Job application at the moment since the 30th July 2024. For someone who has been out of work previously for 6 months, I can categorically tell you that there is a huge problem with ageism within the employment sector. The chap who has posted his good news mentions the term a 'fish out of water'. I can absolutely understand this as this was me a couple of years ago. The oldest designer within a room full of teens. That was a 6-month FTC and as much as I'm grateful for the employment, I'm hoping that I don't end up in that scenario again.

Congratulations. … I read the other comments and with some saying it should be easy to get a job… well, it isn’t. The days of leaving one job and getting another a few days later have gone. I am 56 and have been economically inactive for 3years now. I stopped applying for jobs after a while, disheartened and also fed up of the interviews where they were saying I was over qualified. Or obvious ageism was the rejection reason. Looking back at the job roles I interviewed for, well, most of those companies now do not exist… so I would not have been employed for long. The market I was in is now majority contract only, very rare to find a permanent role. They are short term, low pay and bullying environments… can understand why some companies have failed and folded over the past few years. I am happy just muddling along and now I have access to my personal pension I will just accept that it will be enough to live on and go enjoy myself. I am glad I had the foresight to financially plan for this situation while I was working.

I'm 60 and live in Perth, Australia and have been an IT contractor for 20 years. I retired earlier this year when I turned 60, which is the way Australians can access their pension accounts called Superannuation. In Australia, 12% of salary by law must go into a pension account and can be accessed tax-free from 60. After 30 years of work, it is enough to ensure I can live comfortably until I'm eligible for the age pension. Maybe the UK has the same system as Germany, where self-employed or contractors don't have to contribute to a pension account, whereas in Australia, it is mandatory for everyone to have a pension account. And, of course, the other upside to living in Australia is the beach is a short walk away, and the weather is mostly sunny and hot.

In the UK we have auto-enrolment pensions, which an employer and the employee pays into, the %s can vary. Trouble is we do not have a pension to take from job to job, which I believe is the way it is in Australia, so people here end up with many pensions. I ended up with 6 and have now merged some of those so that I am down to 3!

Thank you for sharing your experiences during your journey, raising awareness on the issues you have encountered and explaining how it looks from your point of view. Some people may see this as having a crisis or feeling outraged enough to share it online, while others like me would see this as an opportunity on what might be waiting for us in the future. Some people in your age group may not be aware of the state of the job market and also how things changed/evolved (especially if they never had to change jobs until they are 55+), but it does not mean some companies aren't shying away from hiring anyone 40+ or even 30+ (especially for certain roles). Things I learned from you: Perseverance is the key Not being shy and sharing your experiences online can help you to create (or be part) of a community Each year/age comes with its own challenges, raising awareness about them and how you tackled them can help others facing similar challenges Good luck in your new role! :)

As you get older you need to reassess what’s important in your life and what makes you happy. Work is a means to an end, other things are more important. I have learned that needs and wants are entirely different things and it’s perfectly possible to have a happy, enjoyable life with less emphasis on material things. I treat every day as if it could be my last, enjoying the positives and largely ignoring the negatives. It works for me!

I'm the same age as yourself i look back and recall being the youngest in the organisation now I'm the oldest. I used to watch the clock hoping the hands would turn quicker so i could leave. The benefits of getting older is the skills and experience you gather along the way, thankfully i only have the odd age related aches and pains and have to wear glasses to read but i now work more hours than i ever did. For the last 6 years I've done the same job for two different local authorities two full-time jobs I'm out of the house for five and not back till gone 10 in the evening, there days when I would happily kick it into touch then i have to remember i get two good wages and my pension is doing very nicely but if I can make it to retirement it will have been worth it.

What advise would you give to the young generation so that they can avoid the situation that your are in? Would you advise to get more skills under your belt in your youth? What sector are the jobs your applying for in? Because some sectors in the UK have been hit harder than others in recent times. For example, customer service and IT sector has struggled in the UK over the last 3 years.

Congratulations! Things are going to have to change. Its very common for people to be working well into their 60's these days so I think hopefully over time ageism will not be so prevalent.

Nice one! I hope it's onwards and upwards from here. May i make a polite suggestion, if you don't want to work 9 to 5, 50 weeks a year any more, have you thought of searching for a permanent but part-time role? You're an accountant, right? I mean like a part time accountant for a company that only needs a part timer. Apologies if I'm stating the bleedin' obvious, but I wish you well, and hope you can carve out the lifestyle you want. I'm the same age as you, and part time / temporary work is something I swoon about, just imagining it. I get Sundays off - whoop de doo! :(

Man great work and 4 months is really good for this market no matter the age, there are many with 6 months and 1 year and many juniors not finding at all in this period, I have already about 2 months in and also thinking more flexibility of what type of role I can contribute

Well done matey - the exact same timeline happenned to me. I just put it down to businesses having a lack of confidence up until the election. I don't know about you, but now I'm questionning whether I still want to do this kind of work, but the pay is good of course. I still haven't found a good balance between well paid and well being. All the best

I would really recommend shaving your untidy "gray" stubble off. It really ages you and makes you look tired. This is a tip I would give most guys to be honest. I don't why this untidy just got out of bed look is popular in the UK. It never used to be. Most people look crap with this style, unless you really have a well maintained and even beard, plus exceptionally good looking.

Congratulations on getting the role even if on interim basis - agree on needing to be flexible and realistic given how contracting and job hunting can go now - however unfair it really is. Take care mate and I will be subscribing to new channel 👍

Nice video. I am 58 white male and have worked in IT for 35+ years, and this scenario scares the shyte out of me. Why? Well, I am not totally sure. I mean I have enough for retirement, my wife works, we have no debt, but here we are. Maybe its change ... the next phase of life, as kids become adults, and we are left wondering whats our new purpose. I suspect its partially because my parents were working class, and very much lived on cashflow and I saw this a lot growing up - so there is uncertainty on what's enough. Maybe because I have spent the last 35 years in work, and surrounded myself with activity and I have very little to fill the gaps. I asked my sister, who lives in the UK what she does all day to explore this topic, but I got a bit of a 'fuck off' in response...yeah could have asked this question a tab better :D But I do enjoy what I do - IT Management Consulting, and I am highly paid and my work life is low stress, high flexibility, and just left to get on with it. I do feel stuck in my current company. I do find myself getting irritated by the growing level of corporate BS, which is strangely proportional to the number of HR people we seem to hire. I do feel discriminated against, both age and gender. But I am also reflective, I have had my fair share of positives and opportunities, and in the end my life has been very different to that of my parents and in-laws ... so I am grateful. I am sort of hoping I can continue as is for another 5 years, and slowly move into a more freelance scenario of working...remove the corp BS. I need to do some more research on how to move in this direction. I am also keen to move or travel again. Am originally a POM but have lived in New Zealand for the past 20+ years. I feel like Southeast Asia is an option ... again more research, and a bit of selling to do on the wife. Best of luck with the new job and the next one.

Well done. I'm, as I type, like a cat on a hot tin roof. I'm 62 and I've got an interview, in person, for a phlebotomist job at my local hospital on Thursday morning. I haven't had an interview for over 20 years and I just can't seem to concentrate on anything. It's interesting that this video popped up in my KZbin recommendations.

@@gotanproject4g174 I just got your latest video recommended to me on KZbin and I remembered that you asked this, so here I am letting you know that I got the job. I'm still waiting for a start date, as I type. If nothing else it shows you can get a job in the public sector, even at 62 in my case. Good luck in your search, I look forward to the video, you will no doubt make, when you get that new job.

Thanks for sharing. Older applicants have two challenges - 1. it may be difficult for them to adapt to a new employer's culture; 2. they cost more than younger applicants. Also, does a prospective employer really want to hear how much you're looking forward to winding down and retiring?

It seems like American private equity companies are here in the uk for a while, my ex employer was bought by an equity company and even though it seemed to work well for a while is wasn’t long before 80% of the workforce were made redundant following a merger with an EU sister firm and the HQ was moved to Denmark. Seems like we are all in a get it while you can situation.
