Just played golf with your pops at Bradshaw. On one hole we got to talking about cards so I asked him if he went to the National. His eyes lit up as he asked me back “did I go to the National”?, as he’s pulling out his phone to show me pics. Immediately I’m like, oh wow, nice card. Another nice card. Card after card turns out to be bucket listers. About the 5th or 6th card I’m recognizing this collection. Said I felt like I just watched this on KZbin. He said my son has a channel. I said is it Midlife cards? Yes, that’s my son. Anyway, small world. I enjoyed my morning with your dad and his friend Allen. It was a pleasure hearing his story. He left me with the recommendation of this estate pickup video

I was born in the 50s. During my youth, all of my friends, including me, collected baseball cards. Unfortunately, over the years, all of their mothers threw their cards away, except my mother. She put them in a plastic Eastern Airlines flight bag (of that period) in our rarely used shed , way in the back where they safely sat for 40 years. When I was cleaning out the shed 30 years ago & reunited with the many, many 50s &60s cards, all of my fond memories of the cards returned. It's funny because, I still remember buying & opening many of packs they came in and gazing at the various players. One of these days, I will do a video of these cards, the very cool Eastern Airlines travel bag & the shed.

very cool video and great find. I was born in 76 and that year my Dad unfortunately gave away all his cards to a student (he was a high school teacher). But when I was about 12 I found a shoebox in his basement. It was mostly 59 and 61, as well as 61 Fleer. A couple hundred cards, but there were a few nice ones, 59 Aaron, 61 Koufax, Snider...and a 61 Clemente that was actually in his wallet, not in the box with the others! Unfortunately the Clemente is the only one I kept. But just a couple years ago I started collecting vintage again, so naturally I started with those sets I had found. Still need most of the stars, but have over half of each set now. I've also been on the hunt for similar finds out in the wild. The coolest I found probably was a couple boxes, maybe 500 cards total but it was mostly minor stars. The big stars weren't there, but they weren't just commons either, it was a whole bunch of guys like Robin Roberts, Orlando Cepeda, etc, and as I recall some really nice rookies too. Man I'm going to go see if I have a video for that, I bet I do. In addition to that, there were probably a hundred cards from the earlier 50's, that was mostly commons and rough shape, but I actually got a good chunk of 53 Topps! To me that was a huge score, the whole lot was $100.

Just a few weeks ago I came across a 1995 Topps Mantle poster (with prints of all his cards) for $40 on FB marketplace. Just a really cool piece to hang on my wall since I'm a huge Yankees fan. Once I got there to pick it up, the guy just hands me a '68 Mantle and says "I'll just throw that in there". I mean, the card is really beat up, rough corners, has some faint writing on it. But I still think it's one of the coolest things to get handed a Mantle for free.

I have had luck twice with finding vintage cards at an estate sale, I didnt stumble across them though. My first several years ago, I puchased a lot of cards from one estate sale and it had all the big cards from 1968 Topps baseball, Mantle , Ryan/Koosman and the Bench rookie , along with the other stars like Clemente and so on, I have since built the set. My second one was this past December, the lot was smaller, but better cards, There where 3 1952 Andy Pafko's, 2 Gil Hodges and a Bob Feller, all in gradable condition, also there was a 1951 Bowman Ted Williams and a 1952 Bowman Pee Wee Reese and Red Schoendienst and a Larry Doby that had a few wrinkles, plus some 1952 Bowman commons and a small stack of 1954 Bowman football, but no stars. I always look mat estate sales for cards !!! If you would like to see the most recent ones, I still havn't done anything with them yet, trying to decide if I will get them graded.

My dad, Curtis Smith (RIP) was a featured collector in Goldmine magazine, he found the first two Elvis Presley records ever made, the original Sun 78’s (I know the first one was Milk Cow Blues, can’t think of second one offhand) in very good condition, at a church record sale for like 50 cents each back in the early 90’s. There were not many made and even fewer survived. I think he sold them in the late 90’s (maybe early 2000’s) at auction and made 4 figures on both, not bad for 50 cents. He said it was the most excited he ever was and he was a thriving collector who started building Beatles memorabilia and seeking all the pressings out in the late 70’s. It was going to yard sales and estate sales and flea markets on his every other weekend that I began to learn about records and would help him search for all kinds of records and memorabilia, and he also collected cards and many other things, he just loved it, no wonder I am such a nut.

When I was 9 or 10 years (1962 or 63) old, my mother and I found a large box of baseball cards at a garage sale. There were many stacks of about 50 with rubber bands selling for 10 cents a stack. Upon seeing them, I convinced her to buy the entire box for a couple of dollars. When I got home I found thousands of cards from 1951 to 1958. Keep in mind I had no cards older than 1960 and had never seen cards this old as there were no guides. Among the many highlights were a 1956 Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams, 1957 Ted Williams and Frank Robinson, 1953 Whitey Ford, several 1955 Harmon Killebrew, 1958 Roger Maris and Sandy Koufax. The bulk of the cards were 1957 and 58 and allowed me very good starts on completing both of these sets. There were of course duplicates but these were great for trading to fill in missing cards. This was my once in a lifetime find.

Thanks for the kind words. I was racing over to check out the cards and then something inside of me said that I needed to set up my camera and record it. I'm so glad that I did, because it is so fun to have gotten to share it with everyone. Our reactions are so authentic as we're pulling HOFer after HOFer. A really fun experience.

Dads always find the good stuff. How do they do it?🤔

It's true!! They really do!! I'm just happy he let me be a part of it!!

That is awesome. FS? ha! Expect more 2s and 3s but I'd still get the key cards graded. They could use some cleaning first.
@josephbunevith7657 Жыл бұрын
The Mantle is about 2 but that's worth more than the box raw. You can work out that edge and clean up that stuff on it to maybe get closer to a 3.
@MidLifeCards Жыл бұрын
The Berra, Aaron, and Mantle definitely have some issues. Others, especially the football cards and 1961 Baseball Cards are in really nice shape and could grade well if that's what he ends up deciding to do.

That is awesome you still have your dad to do that with as well as that your dad found a diamond in the sand. Congratulations

The vintage cards are so much better than new stuff. I recently picked up some of those same cards for my own pc. I've got the Aaron 1960 in a PSA 4. The 1961 Brooks Robinson in a 3. And a Frank Robinson raw in ex. Glad to have them with my other vintage finds.

That's awesome. Sounds like you've got a cool collection. Those are the exact sorts of cards I collect, too. Amazing find for sure. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. The best part of posting videos for me is connecting with people and hearing about their stories and collections. :-)

For sure!! He spent a lot of time in the 90s putting together a 1959 and 1960 set. And he’s a huge baseball fan!!
