If its over the air, I think it uses the coaxial cable from the TV tuner to the satellite LNB as an antenna more the the LNB is cable to pick something up from a satellite. Plus I think the new and old DirecTV LNBs pick up their satellites only and requires some type of power.

Very interesting. I'm curious how you aimed the dish. When I was about your age, I used bent wire clothes hangers for an antenna while camping. Yes, it has been awhile.
