great info. thank you for sharing However as I recall we use compass error to calculate deviation. not gyro error

Note that gyro compass is not affected by the variation.. therefore do not calculate gyro error and variation to get deviation.

What u found initially ig gyro error ....to find magnetic compass error you have to use magnetic bearing to TRUE brg to get compass error....and applying variation on that gives deviation of compass .
