You never know what you're going to run into. This mule was limping badly. It took a bit to fond and remedy the problem. I drained what pressure was there at 9:40 min. and then put a shoe on it. I then found a round hole in the other front foot at 16:00 min. I then found a screw that had fallen out at 17:40, when I trimmed it. He got better real quick. They went on a ride 2 days later, and he did great.

When our horses’s hoofs get dry like that, we just wet them with the garden hose. Or put their hoof in a bucket of water for a few minutes. Then they are easier to trim.

Always go over the ground when you do any kind of work with metal screws or nails. I use a magnet bar or you can find them in a Lowes, Home Depot or a building supply store. Also a Granger or a automotive supply store carriers them.

It is well worth noting that the most common cause for lameness in horses, donkeys and mules when there is no obvious cause ......is an abscess. A vet/ farrier can sort the problem out very quickly to drain.

That mule is 20 years old and has learned a lot about people who stick their behinds right where that behind can be grabbed. He has enough experience to know that "bee-hind people" always say "Oh son this don't hurt" right before you zap that foot so bad that mule can't see straight. Speaking for myself, I have never seen a hoof so hard!

Cheryl, Thanks for your concern. Out in the manure there is little sanitary. One foot in the wet by the water trough or stepping where they eliminate even bandaged or not and there is bacteria. the abscess is walled off. Once the pressure is drained They heal right up. If it ain't broke don't fix it. What we did worked perfect. Mule sound in just over 2 days.

@RockinJFarrier
@RockinJFarrier Жыл бұрын
Michael, It's pretty tough to overcome confirmation issues. You can tip the heal of the shoe, lowering the inside edge, then the heel is gently forced out. Usually the heel is short, not even with the other heel. you want to trim the opposite heel a bit shorter. you can tip both webbs if both heels are contracted. If you just maintain them they usually stay sound for years.Thanks for watching.

What would be real freaky would be if both holes were caused by the same screw. When the farrier lifted the first foot where the hole was deep and wide the screw could have fallen out, and then the mule could have stepped on the screw with the second foot, then the screw fell out on the ground. That would have been a screwy scenario. Pun intended.

Gail Wright, He must have been feeding you a line. The females are Molly Mules, The males are John Mules. Mules are a cross between a Male Jack Ass and a Mare,(female horse). If you cross a Stallion on a Jenny (Female Donkey) you get a Henny not a mule. John & Molly Mules can breed, and get pregnant but they absorb them because the chromosomes are off. That's why they castrate the Johns so They don't deal with that. Hope that sheds some light. It probably created more questions........... Thanks

Is this the first hoof you've ever done ? It's like watching amateur hour, seriously !!! A white line ulser/absess can be serious, if not treated PROPERLY !!! This is shocking....

It's the farmers who do the damage. They're mostly a bunch of ignorant peasants. The farrier does his best to reverse the damage of months of neglect.

It's a challenge working with a Go-Pro on your head, not being able to see where it's pointing, until your all done, and yes, try not to move your head. Doin the beast an old dog can do. Thanks.

You suck at your job, you watch some other farriers on KZbin. They are smooth and cause no pain

Mules 10x smarter than horses or most people. Cows too. Never got bit by a cow but plenty of horse and the worst, pony, bites. Why got no problem with a nice thin sliced horse sandwich on a chronic misbehaving jerk. Some bulls like that too and one sideways look and back of the barn. And jc this can be done humanely. Better than some 3 yr old rubbed out
