You did well, explaining it in a simple manner. It makes a good guestimation for navigation. God bless.

_you kind of get a feel for what the time is within an hour when you live or spend a lot of time outdoors. Sun straight up is midday and we kind of do the math you just explained by rote. Very cool video on a subject I haven't seen covered before_

Pre-requisite: awareness of approximate sunrise/sunset times. When checking against your compass, you need to know local magnetic declination.

Good explanation, Dave. It won't be long before your technique will be more accurate than your compass, given the way the magnetic north pole is migrating. The magnetic north pole has left Canada and is racing towards Siberia. Google it - it is real. We may all need your survival skills very soon. The pole flip that killed the mammoths may soon revisit us.

for the telling of the time, you hold your hands out not too far away from yourself, like you did in this video? that could make a big difference. doesn't it also matter how far from the equator you are?

Thank you for sharing your experience and wealth of knowledge. I will say this, the Earth does not rotate. The sun, however definitely does move. I’m a circle across the face of the Earth from above. It is quite obvious.

I spat my coffee out when he said rotation of the earth. Dave thinks the earth is spinning at a 1000mph at the equator..... someone tell this legend the truth about the earth being flat and stationary as it does on the first page of the holy bible.
