I say this all the time and I still say it..........I love Dav's field trips the best! Dav is always at his best and in his element (even outside his home state) and I learn the most from him in the field. This spot of MN is so beautiful it makes me want to move there......7 months out of the year though! lol

I’m guessing the one that hasn’t been seen in Minnesota since 1988 was the mussasagga?

I was just able to photograph a six lined racerunner down here in allamakee county iowa back on may 28th. It may have been the coolest experience of my life... I was lucky enough to spot an adult hunting around some rocks only about 5 feet from us.. and it allowed us to observe it for probably 2 or 3 minutes before making its way back into the grass. So amazing to see your footage of them as well, amazing find 💚

I grew up on the Mississippi in Iowa and the Northerns I've seen were always babies or huge, nearly 5ft big guys. On the water you'd see smaller ones but the big ones would come up on the docks and back on the concrete. Biggest I ever saw was doing that and I wish I could have measured her cuz she seemed longer than claimed max lengths I swear - which the Mississippi would be a logical place to see the biggest I think. Fox snakes used to be down here in Iowa but I have never seen one and they are supposedly a lot harder to find now than in the past. My dream is to find a Blue Racer. Super rare and shy, but beautiful and crazy unique, and it's nuts they are native to the Midwest.

Being Not super far from there (on the Iowa side) my biggest challenge, I guess you could say, is worrying about ticks. Because when I see long grass like that, my second thought (after "I'll bet there are a bunch of cool snakes in there") is "I'll bet there are a ton of ticks in there." How do you deal with them? Bathe in deep woods off? Soak your socks and boots in some sort of tick repellant? Maybe use Hartz flea and tick treatment on yourself? These are the questions that keep me up at night.

I hate ticks but herp daily I use essential oils. But check threral b4 entering car

@@Mcdashiznit thank you. I will definitely have to look into that.

The only venomous snake I know of in Michigan is the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake which has me guessing that might have been in MN in the past as well.

Do you pack anything special for a herping trip? A first aid pack, or hook or extra water? Any weather you would not go out in? Special shoes? Satellite phones or equipment? Would be fascinated to see what an experienced herper would do to prepare.
