It’s not even a current, localised London thing - it’s so specific, it’s eaten only by the elderly / boomers. It will die out in a generation or so, there isn’t a market for it.

I'm Asian so naturally I'm not used to cold meat pies. However, I appreciate that pies are affordable and practical. Idk much about British history, but it brings a sense of nostalgia as it reminds me of the industrial workers who were the backbone of the economy at that time.

@@Bangyourbirdnumb Joe's attitude does leave much to be desired. Almost like he doesn't even want to be doing this. I will say most famous "British" dishes are just kind of mid. Its mainly just varieties of a meat + bread + potatoes with very very limited spices when compared with the rest of the world. So many better cuisines. Laotian, Indian, Mexican, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Italian, Pakistani, Japanese etc etc etc. The good news for the British is if "American" can even be considered its own cuisine then it is one of the few countries whose cuisine is more boring and bland than the cuisine of Britain. If we were putting the cuisines of the world in a tier list British would be C tier at best but really D tier. I mean in all seriousness what countries would be lower? America, maybe some Scandanavian countries?

Harry needs to take Joe on a post-pub 11pm tour to various Northern cities to try out the local takeaway delicacies. Middlesborough for a Parmo tour Wigan for a Wigan Kebab tour Leeds for a Chip Butty Anywhere else for a doner kebab, from a bricks and mortar takeaway to a dodgy roadside van type. Slices of pork pie, big chunk of stilton, some picalilli, a garden salad, and a pint of well-kept London Pride. I'm not sure it gets much better.

One of my fondest memories of GB is the pork pies served on British Rail in 1972. Never found anything else that tasted like those pies. And I've tried.

I've been going to Mother Mash for 10 years or so even before I moved to the UK. Love them and the owner is super nice. When I lived in the East End, I had Willys and they're very good. I was fortunate enough to have tried F. Cooke before most shuttered, both on Broadway and Hoxton Market. in 2021, before I moved back to the states, the F. Cooke on Hoxton was still open, but only a couple of days a week.

By far the worst pie and mash I've ever had was the Hoxton Cookes. Maybe an off day but it was truly shitr compared to arments, manzes or cockneys on portobello Road

Some Americans do the cut and switch procedure. Lay down the knife between cuts/bites. You’ve seen it in films or done by tourists.

At 6:05. If you remove the gelatin from the eels and pour parsley gravy (liquor) or onion/beef gravy over top they are more edible.
