I’d say even though PRS was missing, it’s genre was pretty much covered. They’re like the luxury rock guitar brand. I’d say if you wanted to get a little more genre specific then some other guitar brands could of been introduced. Like Dean guitars taking the cake on 80’s metal. Gretsch for rockabilly or bluegrass. And so on. But solid work as always.

I remember being very confused by this when I was starting out - I randomly ended up with a shredder guitar. One thing you didn’t mention: ergonomic features play a huge (maybe even bigger) role in why guitarists of certain genres choose certain guitars. For example, metal players need thin, fast necks and low action, thick strings and long scale for detuning. Shredders need thin, fast necks and low action like metal players, but also thin strings, upper fret access, Floyd Rose tremolo bridges and locking tuners for dive bombs. Surf guitarists need thick strings and a standard tremolo. Blues players prefer thicker more traditional necks and strings range from thick (SRV) to thin (BB). Jazzers (who you left out!) need a staccato sound so they prefer hollow bodies and flat wound strings.

Yeah this should be emphasized! I started playing metal, but always fancied the Ibanez Iceman for its sexy shape. Tried one in the guitar store and immediately realized that the heavy body and the very high action of the model I tried would NEVER work for me riffing and soloing on stage.

Personally I'm using a mid to late 60s Japanese guitar right now with gold foil pickups personally I find them great if you're after something you just don't hear everyday. Im pretty sure I cut a baseball bat down the middle and fret the core and not really notice much difference in playability but for someone who really never plays outside the house the guitar is definitely unique. Something I'll say on the guitar as a whole is it has a warm almost acoustic sound. I'm pretty sure with the right amp and a better player than myself one could do the opening to Stairway To Heaven and a listener probably wouldn't know the difference unless they had a well trained ear

Split coil humbuckers can do twangy tones well with less buzz than single coils, so I definitely think they're the best choice for a versatile guitar

My first electric guitar is Cort X-2 which my father gave me as birthday gift when I was in high school. A cheap double-humbucker superstrat which surprisingly good imo. I recorded couple of EPs with my band using that guitar modded with Seymour Duncan SH-08 on the bridge. Man, time flies 🥲

Annoying thing about my country is that all these brands and types aren't as readily available so we aren't as spoiled for choice unless you're willing to pay import tax but so far I've been using an Ibanez Gio for my djentcore needs and some mellower stuff and it hasn't failed me yet!
@Mateo_Romero2 жыл бұрын
I feel that you kinda missed the coil split, which to me really opens the door for versatility, you can have the most metal (passive) pickup in the market with an HH config, if you coil split it and place in the center it will sound gorgeous for any semi acoustic / funk groove, or put it front pickup, roll down the tone, and jazz away.

I have the same pickup on several guitars with similar construction (hipshot style bridge) and same tuning. None of them sound the same when it comes to low end and shine. I agree that pickups are very important, but wood is also an important part of the sound of a guitar.
@miamidolphin75192 жыл бұрын
I'm curious if you've checked the winding of those pickups to see how close they are and what the tolerances are. I did a test like this with two of the same exact pickup and then measured them and the values were wildly off so i rewound it and they basically sounded the same afterwards. -Miami

Funny how you have your Strat in pieces. As I just snagged a Tele Baritone that is in pieces as well, as I’m upgrading it too. Haha But I love guitars that break the mold, or rather, bands that use them in a way that do so. I instantly think of Loathe, and how few people were using or even open to the idea of using P90’s or Jazzmaster pups for low tuned metal. And then they drop some of the lowest tuned stuff I’ve heard doing just that. Which makes sense in my mind, since bass guitars tend to use singles or variants of single coil pickups. So if one of tuning that low, or even lower than a bass, why not use a pickup similar to what a bass guitarist would? Obviously more to it than just that, but I think you get my point. Good vid nonetheless, as I think it’s important to know the strengths and weakness of your instrument(s), as it allows you to use them as they were intended, whilst also enabling you to know how to use them in an unconventional way because you know where they shine or struggle.

Also to note the pickup quality barely make a difference, it's more the type of pick up. And even then the amp wills till make 80% of the tone, Or specifically the cone inside the amp.

I love P90s for punk rock. I completely ignored them for most of the length of my career, but then I got a Tele and loved the tone, but still wanted a bit more heft. Got a Les Paul Junior and it’s perfect.
@ajs7872 жыл бұрын
Well, the LP Jr. was THE punk guitar when the genre was starting, cause it was a student model. Everyone from The Clash to the Pistols used one. The odd one out was Green Day with a Strat.
@Jydmd2 жыл бұрын
@@ajs787 Definitely! My first influences were Blink, Weezer and Green Day, so a Strat with a humbucker in the bridge was THE guitar to have. I've later learned that most of the Blue Album by Weezer was recorded with a LP Special, also I've seen Bad Religion in concert and they use P90s a lot. My life was changed forever haha

I definitely don't agree that "the biggest attributing factor to sound is 100% the pickups". Its definitely been proven quite a few times on KZbin that its a combination of your Cab/Speaker and your Microphone.

When speaking specifically about the "guitar" it self. The pickups are the biggest factor of tone/sound as opposed to wood strings ect.... but overall definitely apeakers and cabs change tone/sound the most in the whole chain.
