E's play of D9 is silly. But it allows playing a diamond from dummy at trick 2 keeping W on lead. Then club position allows for 4 tricks.

Playing 8 of clubs instead of 10 would lead to another extra trick with no risk.

you should just play a small club to the 8 clubs...east has likely started with singleton queen or QJ...so if you are playing the 10 you may as well play the 8 for another trick. It's a good hand from a teaching perspective though.

12 cards is not the best i've seen! A friend was once dealt a hand of all 13 Spades in a social game. She bid 7 Spades. She write to the Bridge Union asking if that was a first. They asked what she had bid. They didn't approve of her jumping straight to 7. If she had gone more slowly she would probably have been doubled (with three aces out) and got a better score. 🤣
