Sir good explanation but in 3P2 term symbol no.of microstates we get 5 by formula (2J+1) but we get 9 by formula (2s+1) (2l+1) any explanation sir please

when the J value given then things become more bounded i mean more information about the state there fore number of microstate decreases ..

Hi jaya, That question is very nice and belongs to statistical thermodynamics, it cannot be solved by above mentioned formulas, it needs a statistical approach. do't worry ill try and make a video on that or else you can inbox us your question an dwe will try to give you written solution of it.

umendra khokhar, For this question you've total particles 6 and they've to be arranged in states {1,2,3} Put it in formula N!/n1! n2! n3! Which means 6!/1!×2!×3! Solve it... You will definitely get answer

in the video I've explained that for given electronic config. we have to use formula of n!/r!*(n-r)! where n=max e- that orbital can have, r=no. of electron given; fro your case n=10 and r=5 and "!" shows factorial. solve it an dyou will get 7*6*6

Number of microstates for d3 configuration. I have solved the problem answer is coming out 240, but in the book answer is 7×6^2, it's a 4 mark question in csir net in June 2012, is there any printing mistake or something else.

Your answer should come 120 and yes the answer in the book is misprinted. Use 10!/(3!*7!) !=factorial
