Fine Art TV Series - Colour In Your Life
Season - 04
Episode - 13
Filmed on Location at - Sydney, NSW, Australia
Ken Done’s first solo exhibition was held in Sydney in 1980. Since then, he has held over 50 one-man shows, including major exhibitions in Australia, Europe, Japan and the USA. His work has been described as the most original style to come out of Australia, and his paintings are in collections throughout the world.
Born June 29, 1940, in Sydney, Ken Done left school at 14 to enter the National Art School in East Sydney. After 5 years study, he commenced a highly successful career as an art director and designer in New York, London and Sydney. At the age of forty, he made the decision to leave the industry and devote himself to painting full time. Since then his works have been shown in the Archibald, Sulman, Wynne, Blake, and Dobell Prizes.
Working predominantly in oils and acrylic, Ken Done takes inspirations from diverse sources - the ebullience of the sea and sky, the transcendent emotions of a quiet garden, aboriginal art, japanese poetry, the urban shout of Sydney, where he makes his home - but the sensibility that underlies his work is uniquely his own.
This original art has become the creative source of a unique and now famous Australian brand. It began with a small run of t-shirts printed with a beautifully simple, bold drawing of Sydney Harbour. This original image caught the attention of Sydney siders and visitors alike and has gone on to become an icon of Sydney, and an icon of Ken Done.
Ken Done’s work is now widely recognised as holding a unique position in Australia’s cultural heritage. In 1992, he received the Order of Australia (A.M.), for services to Art, Design and Tourism. In many parts of the world, Ken Done has come to symbolise Australia and Australians: creative, optimistic and bold.

Hello from the pandemic times! This is a lovely visit with Ken Done while he paints! I've had a print of 'Downstairs at the Cabin' for many years. He probably has a mobile phone by now!

I am working my way through Colour In Your Life episodes--what a joy. Today is Ken Done day and as I am watching there is such a feeling of familiarity. I remember my favorite sunglasses from 30 years ago (at least). Google images and there they are! Ken Done sunglasses. The rest of the day will be spent enjoying images of Ken Done work.

I grew up seeing my sister's Ken Done curtains everyday. Back around Expo 88 time, I remember being amazed by them. Unfortunately now I think these paintings look a little basic. I do admire the free spirit behind them, but think his old work was better.

There are many great symbolists, they make people think, they open the viewers mind and they open their heart. I adore Ken's work, as I love Moreau and Redon. It's these expressions that contain personality, that tell a story, it's the artists that engage and bring forth feelings that are remembered. Some "artist" by today's inst-famous standards may make true to life pictures, and while you can admire the work and the skill, there is no soul. I think that's the difference to me, between a painter and an artist. The soul. If I wanted some soulless recreation I'll take or buy a photo. Edited typo

He does paint the same things over and over, with different twists. Paints "for himself" but to sell and those harbor view and garden ones do sell.
