Thanks, Rob. I've done similar but without the bead so thanks for the upgrade suggestion!

Great little video. I think a lot of guys kind of wander through this scenario and end up making weird compromises because they hadn't really thought it through. Really important to recognize it early, especially if you are setting the door.

I like the wedge against the ceiling to push pressure on the glue joint. In the past, I've made the custom trim piece and then ripped the outer profile off of the matching trim at whatever proportional size fits best and then I'll glue/nail on to get a closer match to existing. Worth noting that they do actually make a 2 1/4" windsor, but the bead on your trim looks more like a stafford, so it wouldn't be perfect, but very close. It comes in very handy sometimes. For a random little tip you might like that I use religiously on scribes- bevel the length of the piece 20⁰, and then cut your scribe at 5-10⁰. You're fighting much less material as you follow your line. Works awesome.

The scrap wood clamp trick is awesome! Thanks for sharing all the knowledge and experience, so helpful for us who are still relatively new to this.

This is a timely clip, Rob. I have a few windows to trim at my son’s house this week. Thanks for posting this 😊

This was about a day late for me. I had a similar situation but the header was also up against the ceiling as there was a door top light. Fortunately, I've seen enough of your stuff before to figure this out myself. I just cut down my trim rather than make custom trim. Really good advice

I get it. 3/16- THE unit for reveal. - Love Windsor casing. Done several homes this way. - Here? I'd square stock that action. - Mitered detail--in a throwaway egress point--Nah. - I'd flatten" it to make the transition disappear. - It's going to painted, right? - Caulk it. - I really like the bevel.

I pre assemble all my casing by using a corrugated stapler. I back nail the casing upside down on a build table. When i encounter case that needs ripped down i measure top and bottom and then rip with my track saw and 120" rail. I do the same as you setting a 10° bevel.
@ConcordCarpenter2 ай бұрын
We do alot of preassemble too - not everyone can, and not every situation is perfect for it. This is a situation that we would not preassemble

I wish more carpenters would watch channels like this so I don't have to and do finish carpentry. I would much rather paint. Excellent job/ideas/thought process and I learned more that 1 thing again watching. One of the best channels for job site woodworking learning that I am subbed to

I cut the head in first and mark miters, then that gives you top measurements to start scribe, when all cut I miter mate the joints together and fit as 1 piece, so you don't need all the cramps and bits of timber all over the place

The 3/16 reveal is the correct way to do it. I see a lot of guys using the 1/4 inch reveal and it looks like shit. It's amazing how many guys really think that a1/4 inch is the way to go. You wouldn't think that just a 1/16 difference would matter that much, but it does. Another thing about that is using the 1/4 inch reveal makes it harder to hit the door jam material with your brad or finish nail. It causes you to have to angle the nail more. Those inside nails not only keep your trim in tight, but they hold the door frame solid and stabilize it so the door frame doesn't move and keeps the door functioning correctly. I learned about the 3/16 reveal way back in the 1990s when was looking at some existing trim that I thought looked really good, so I actually measured it and noticed that they weren't using 1/4 inch reveal, they had used 3/16, which obviously looked better, so I started installing all of my casing that way.

I take it from the middle ? So I hv 3.5” trim ? 2” 7/8 space ? I take it from the middle leaving most the profile . I did an entire upper floor of an older home having 4 doors close to wall /door . Showed the GC two options and he wanted the “from the middle “ !

It’s not a door. It’s a cased-opening and it was set plum and square. I’m not sure what you’re referring to.

4:15 the old. Finisher blames to framer. Framer blames the finisher. Drywall guy says, I just hang drywall and don't build anything. Plumber says, there's no pipes anywhere near there. Electrician says, I'm not carpenter but look like the frame of that door is out of whack. Carpenter says, Electrician doesn't know what he's talking about. He needs to stick with Electricity. Next thing you know someone comes to work with a black eye. Can you tell I've worked construction? 😂 ... Just finishes. I just wouldn't be happy with the look, but it works fine.

4:32 Rob, I’m not understanding why it’s a 45 and a 90? Why not find the angle point to point?

Because the left side is narrower than the right side - a point to point miter wont line up
