Thanks for the prompt response. I love it that potters share their knowledge. I do a lot of burnishing. I use the back of a spoon or a large clear Christmas tree light. They are pointed and the point comes in handy to burnish inside of curves where a spoon won't fit.

it's incredible how vibrant your colors are just from wrapping them with the fabric.

Thanks Mike.I have not used Ferric Chloride. I have a book somewhere that shows how to use it with some results. I really like wrapping with straw in a bag and adding chemicals that way. It's been an while. You have inspired me :)

These are beautiful. Just learning about this technique. My question is will they hold water without being glazed? I think not. Also can you glaze them if barrel firing? I only know about the kiln process unfortunately so lots of questions sorry!

I used copper carbonate, RIO and salt. I soaked cotton rags and straw in the mixture, allowed to dry and stuffed the pots, straw, rags, in paper bags. Wrapped the bags in twine and fired. Handfuls of rock salt here and there

wow, that is very impressive. i have never tried pottery in my life but now i want to try make some rectangular bonsai pots (no wheel needed). i would like to have a little less psychedelic color variation than your pots (which look great by the way) but for my bonsai pots i want a bit more subtle, maybe dark blues and blacks only, and gradual color variations, no sharp gradients. how would you go about that? thanks

With barrel firing it's kind of a crap shoot. Blacks would be obtained by keeping the pot under the coals and smothering the fire, you could try some some cobalt carbonate for the blue.

What do you add to get the blues?? Most saggar firings I have done have just gotten oranges and blacks. Thank you!

@wphlea - they were all covered with terra sig. A couple had a few chips. I may switch to burnishing them if I catch them at the right time.

I really like your works, I am wondering if I can e-mail you and ask your other experience of pit firing as I am going to do that same thing as you have done, your work is just really really good... Joseph

Tristan Bradford They were bisque fired to cone 018 beforehand. Not sure what type of wax, but a quick Google search should answer that question.
