I milled a lot of wood from an old tree on my property. We used it for trim in our house. The wife painted it white ,waited , then wiped excess off. The grain showing thru is beautiful. Don’t think i would paint one of your kits.

Ash is an underrated gun and also boat wood. Absolutely beautiful. My parents had a giant old white ash that succumbed to the borers and died. I wanted to mill it into lumber but my dad went and turned it into firewood before I could get to it.

That premium Ash is becoming quite hard to find. Going to be a legacy piece some day. Gorgeous piece of wood, certain to be a thing of true beauty

Ash is very beautiful wood, but it's very tough to work with. I had an old ash tree cut down here where I live, some 60 years old or so, and it dries out really fast. Most times it gets used as firewood instead of anything else.

If you lightly sand after Iron Nitrate, you can remove it from the lighter layers where it doesn't really soak in. This gives a stronger contrast between light and dark which makes even plain Beech look nicer. Same applies if you apply tanic acid first, it soaks down into the darker bands so you again get even more contrast.

Another terrific video, Jim! And, you have a fabulous videographer, too (who gives great verbal prompts from behind the camera - Ha!). I have a question: I make lots of charcuterie boards and am currently in the middle of a big run of curly maple. I ordered some iron nitrate so I can try to emulate what you've done with some stocks. My question is...what is the oil you are using to rub on after you've used the heat gun? I have been using Osmo Oil almost exclusively, but I'd like to know if there's something better/different that you (or any viewers) can recommend. Thanks! ~Dr. Larry S. I liked high end block the least, the plain one was beautiful but the middle one appealed to my eye. It was more random and unique. For me the super curly stuff just seems way to busy, they say you dont want too much of a good thing. The novelty wears off n you feel like a glutton 😄

After the sealer, what about carnauba wood wax? Add a little shine, add some protection.

That is some beautiful wood. Have you ever used sycamore for a stock? It mills cleanly, and a 90° corner will be as sharp as oak, but you can carve it with a pocket knife. It also has very striking grain.

Tried reaching you through the person who answers emails for you. Sent you pics of the finished woodsrunner and a question: I make hunting bags based on the original templates, would you be interested in offering something like that to your customers? Either way it’s fine. I can send you a sample to look at, if you are interested. Thanks 🙏

Jim , I make a lot of powder horns. Would you sell me small blocks of quality woods about 3.5” x3.5” by8” long for turning powder horn base plugs ? I think there is a market for good lathe turning woods.

Amazon sells small blocks of wood. I bought maple there to use for practice carving. Also bought the carving tools there.

We unfortunately don't have wood that size. Our slabs are usually no thicker than 2 3/8" at most but usually we are at about 2"
