My little sister has cf also and within the last month she has realized how much she struggles to learn and find motivation while doing treatments and missing classes and has decided she no longer wants to be a vet but wants to work at an animal shelter to get to go through less school. She is only 10 so this could all change but covid was the real set back because my mom immediately switched her to virtual which made her struggle even more but it was best for her health. No matter anything others may think that disables them from doing what they want I believe they will always be able to push themselves into whatever they would like to do if they really want it. She is the reason I want to be a NICU nurse 😊

I think Community College is a very smart move for you. I started out in CC and some of the best professors I ever had in my academic career (I have two masters degrees from Indiana Univ) were at CC. Classes are smaller and I think professors tend to be dedicated to teaching and their students. Like you said, CC will give you a chance to explore a little bit and maybe it'll help you to figure out what you want to do with your life. And I think it's good that you are purposefully breaking away from your crowd. You will always be friends and they've been a great support system. I just think it's good to go your own way with college. There are a lot of great schools out there that go out of their way to help their students with disabilities instead of just complying with the minimum requirements. I hope you get inspired! I love what you said, "Failure is exciting"! And I am delighted that you see a world of possibilities.

You are absolutely right in your thoughts here Makayla! I qualified for Community College night school my senior year and only had to be in high school less than half the hours each day with only 3 remaining core classes. It was great the first couple of months to come home early to chill, then go to night classes with the "adult" students, but then I realized the same as you that I needed to soak in all those experiences of my last high school year that I could - so I would stay full days and participated in clubs to fill that time. I am so glad that I did and have great memories! Each day is a gift for all of us, though most of us never acknowledge it. You make each day count in what you take from it and give back to others around you. You are a true inspiration!

Community college for the basic core classes is rlly the smart thing to do! Advice from someone who did it: take a look at the course requirements for your major at the university you plan to transfer to, as soon as you have an idea. Use that to avoid taking classes that you won't need later and to make sure you get pre reqs out of the way (for example, as a Georgia Tech student, I'm so happy I took Linear Algebra despite my previous university only requiring it for CS majors)

Hello Mak! Since you won’t be living in s dorm for your first year in college, I thought you might be interested in hearing about my experience. I lived in a dorm when I was a freshman in college... and it wasn’t fun. It was noisy. There was was a late night area for talking, and it was outside my room. People usually talked there until 2 AM. My first class was at 7:30 AM. I set my alarm for 6 AM. I was sleep deprived. Also, there was a study room, but it was noisy. I spent a lot of time on the “quiet study” floor of the library. I asked for a quiet room for the second semester. and I ended up on the floor for juniors, seniors and graduate students.

She was saying kids getting out of high school should maybe not go to college right away but take a few years exploring different jobs and/ or different opportunities that may come from having these jobs and that those years probably develop an idea of what they really want to do then go to college. During this time they can be saving money that will help them During college.

So many people go to community college at the beginning bc the first year or two are more core classes with maybe a few classes towards a major. Your path is very similar to many peoples path through college…. Not mention it is a bit cheaper and saves some money. It is a very normal choice and good choice. Dorm rooms were fun and sorority life but it is also over rated. I felt sorority life was more dictating to how I spent my time and also made it hard when friendships grew apart bc of different sorority choices. I enjoyed college better when I switched universities and shared an apartment with a friend and decided not to re-affiliate to my sorority, less pressure more fun.

I think it‘s so crazy what a big thing this seems to be in the US! Personally, I am from Germany and I finished high school last year and went directly off to uni but this is a pretty rare thing to do here nowadays. Really, most people choose a similar path as you do 🙈 Many of my friends do sth called a “voluntary social year” where they just help out in a kindergarten or something like that for one year before going to college. Others take a gap year in another country and even other friends just take a year off working or doing internships to find out what they want to do with their life. So what I wanna say is: It may seem to you as if you’re standing out with what you’re doing bc you are in the US and in your environment but globally seen this is sooooo normal nowadays!! So please don’t go crazy thinking about this, it’s the perfect path for you, you will hopefully be happy doing this and that’s the most important thing!!
