I like that you keep in your blunders and re-dos. I definitely think it ads to the video, it shows that everybody makes mistakes. And you shouldn't be worried about starting a project because you think you might fail, or that something will go wrong.

Woodworking For Mere Mortals. Come for the woodworking.....Stay for the sound effects! The box is cool. Many of your 'Older Than Dirt' viewers grew up shinning our shoes before we attended church, weddings, school assemblies, banquets, proms, etc. We had a shoe shine box with different polishes and brushes. The box was a must have accessory for every well dressed young man. Today, in the 'Nike' age.....not so much.

Hi Steve! I am watching your videos for 5-6 years now and you and Mathias were the ones who pushed me towards woodworking, by now I basically changed all of our furniture in the house with ones I made myself. It is a pretty expensive hobby here in Hungary as we don't have that much good quality wood and therefore tools are also pretty expensive. I saw sometimes you ran into metric problems, but most tape measures I found here have one side metric, the other imperial, so you can use them for both situations. They are pretty useful...
@RaiderGraf

I find it hilarious and in the true spirit of America that you figured the drawer pull was probably metric and said "I'll just try and get it close" instead of finding a metric ruler Bravo 🇺🇸 🇺🇲 🇺🇸 🇺🇲

I was building a deck in New City, NY and the customer wanted to help so I gave him my drill with a 1/4" bit and said, "Drill some clearance holes in the handrail balusters, so the nails won't split the wood." There were about 40 balusters and I figured drilling all those holes would keep him busy for a while. About an hour goes buy and I need my drill so I go and check on the customer's progress, he should be pretty close to being done. The customer is sweating bullets and only has about 20 balusters drilled, he looks up at me and says, "This is a really tough job, I can see why you gave it to me!" I took a look at the drill and it was in reverse. After giving him back the drill he could not believe how fast he was able to make holes. He said, "Let's not tell the wife." "Your secret's safe with me." It was all I could do to keep a straight face. Great video Steve, thumbs up.

I made my own shoe shine box and it looks great! I’ve learned so much watching Steve Ramsey’s channel on KZbin! I gotta say that I would have never lasted in this field if it wasn’t for channels like this one! I’ve been woodworking now for about 4 years and consider myself to be an intermediate woodworker by now. I’ve mainly stayed within the furniture making business, but have recently ventured out into taking custom orders from friends and family. Although I haven’t taken that dive into making this my main source of income yet, but plan to very soon. This wouldn’t have been possible if channels like this one didn’t exist. Lastly one side note regarding the shoe shine box is that I went with using a clear shoe grip for the foot rest. I was able to find it on Amazon for pretty cheap. I love the way it still shows the natural beauty of the wood after applying the clear grip tape to the shoe rest. Anyways I thought I would share that with anyone who reads this. I also wanted to personally thank Steve Ramsey for all of the motivation and creative ideas. Please never stop sharing your skill and art with us!

Neat project but personally I think a sailors ditty box might be popular, it could be used as a keepsake box or as one scoutmaster ive seen used as a campbox for little supplies and tools. I've seen at least one set of plans in the book The Marlinspike Sailor by Hervey Garrett Smith its similar to a miniature English tool chest in appearance.

You definitely want the shoe support farther forward to be between the two strop handles. Dress shoes have a heel that you'd hook onto that flat edge of the shoe support. In that example photo, even though the handles are all the way to the front edge, the shoe platform support is a lot farther forward between the handles, and the box itself looks smaller. Otherwise, this looks great. The interior organization looks helpful, and I might have to add this to my grandpa's shoeshine box I inherited.

Also heard and actually saw it on one of the KZbin channels that simple soaking the disk in a cleaning solution and scrubbing the teeth afterwards does its magic and removes all gunk etc. to such extent that sometimws even sharpening is unnecessary. Cleaning a number of times and sharpening on an as needed basis does require some elbow grease, but it sure helps save some serious cash, especially when it comes to nice expensive disks.

Great box and, as always, so many useful tips and tricks (y) I wanna try to make one too, with a custom build trey. I've got my dad's 2 shoe/boots-brushes he received from in the army in 1948, and both he and my mom used them for decades, and sure, they look a little used, but they're still a lot better than any you can buy today. And they too good just to lay in a plastic bag, as the old wooden trey they were in for decades sadly disappeared after my parents died about 15 years ago ..

Rather than using a metric ruler or guessing where to put the holes for the drawer pulls, place a paper over the screw holes of the drawer pulls and poke holes through the paper with a sharp pointed tool (like an awl or even a nail). You can draw a line between the holes on the paper for alignment. Then align the paper on the top of the lid and use a sharp point to go through the holes to mark where to drill pilot holes.

The vast majority of shoe shine boxes don't have handles to loop a shine cloth through. There are two reasons for that. First, the handles won't help you shine the quarters or counter of the shoe. Second, there's no advantage to them as it's not difficult to buff your shoes with just downward pressure on the cloth. I get the vague feeling that Steve has never sat in a chair and had his shoes shined by a professional.

Hello, I have a wood working idea, that I am stumped on. I would like to build a hinged sliding drop down shelf. The shelf needs to be its own slide rail so it sits in place, but it also be able to swing down beneath the craft table so that it is a dedicated sewing machine shelf. Then a separate free piece of wood would set in to the slot while the sewing machine sits out of the way still connected to the craft table. How can I accomplish this??? I have a drawing of what it looks like in my head. I would like to send it to anyone who thinks they can help. Yes, I know that I could buy a lift, but I would rather it all be made of wood. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to look and read this. Have a great day.

You’ve got a nice quality blade there, you might try to get it sharpened instead of replacing it.
