Mid 80's was when Finland for the first time were not complete pushovers anymore. The national team came within one win of qualifying for Mexico '86. The qualification for Italia '90 was impossible to begin with when West Germany and Holland were in the same group but they still managed to win Wales at home and take a point from the away match to avoid finishing at the bottom of the group.
