*_Finn is a marketer. To think he went into that interview not knowing what he was going to say is really short sided. Finn knows the buzzwords to say on the internet; “doing it just for the money” is a very popular way to draw eyes on someone. Making definitive statements like “I don’t even like music” is another marketing technique to capture an audience. I’m not saying Finn is pulling some elaborate social experiment or anything, but Finn was very calculated with his responses and got exactly what he wanted out of this interview._*

As someone who’s watched Finn’s content for a long time, I don’t buy his statement for a second. He had a second KZbin channel that I watched quite frequently where he uploaded twitch highlights of himself basically just talking about his honest musical opinions and often times what music he genuinely loved and was passionate about. Anyone who watched his second channel knows he couldn’t have been faking that. What this looks like to me is someone who got sick of being hated and sick of being boxed in to talking about certain topics because of the KZbin algorithm, that he decided to just burn it all to the ground and give the people the Finn they always thought he was. It seems like his thought process was “if they think I’m a villain then I’ll give them a villain”. This Finn just seems bitter, and I can’t exactly blame him.

And all the comments on here raging at him for being a liar and a fraud and whatever else, weighing in on his mental decline and apparent ‘villain arc’ that we are currently witnessing, lack the self-awareness to realise this ‘Finn’ is as a result of them - his audience. This is a man who has actually lost the will to keep defending himself and his opinions. A man who is simply giving his audience what they think he is and what they’ve accused him of being. And now that he is, they’re even more in twists about it. Society as a whole is wild man. Absolutely broken. And it’s why I intentionally separate myself from the crowd. You only have to look at any KZbin comment section to see how toxic society is. I just hope Finn can now find his peace.

Finn chose to market himself and use controversy to push his own channel. He isn't a victim of anything except reading all the negative comments on his own channel and apparently taking them to heart. This "I never loved music so I'm taking my ball ball and going home" is a complete cop out! The bottom line is he created something and he can't deal with the consequences of his own actions (criticism some valid some not).

The worst part of being an artist is marketing---last thing we want to do is "trick" people into giving us money, yet lest we market, we go unseen. So not only do we market, we have to then tailor our work to what will be marketable and it's just a never ending circle of BS that robs artists of their creativity. There's multiple reasons why my own solo work is more "leaked" out into the world rather than "released"---that way, I don't have to worry about marketing. It's just there, it's not how I ever made money---they became my own victory lap so to speak, milestone markers. I left my other work to the marketing vultures.

I would say that in the context of American society where pretty much everything HAS TO be about money, then yes, marketing is mostly just a gimmick to meet those goals. However, I don't think it's typically ENTIRELY about that. I do interviews with people as an entertainment writer, and I can definitely tell you they are actual human beings who have a lot to say in movies, TV, music, whatever. It's just that, with American culture, practically everything MUST BE channeled through the profit motive. Ultimately, it creates this incongruous blend of some genuine sincerity and some potential for pathetic (maybe even backstabbing) dishonesty, motivated by stereotypical cut-throat corporate tactics. But most people aren't as immersed in it as Finn admitted to being, or at least would not want to sell out so hard, to the point where money is the only thing.
@benfrank8649Күн бұрын
Finn has hatebreed tattoos and seemed genuinely excited to talk about them. He said he has been listening to punk and hardcore for like 30 years. I think part of him definitely does care. I think it's when a kid loses a basketball game with his friends "this game is stupid, I don't even care, I would have won if I tried." What I get from this statement from him, is he has had his heart broken by it in some way. He became cynical and then he convinced himself it was a money making scheme the whole time. Someone that JUST cares about money, probably wouldn't think a good get rich quick scheme is have a KZbin channel talking about punk and metal. I guess it worked for him, but typically not the most profitable market.

I don’t know who this guy is or what this is about, but I’m inclined to share my perspective about enjoying music. I’ve played guitar for over 30 years, drums for over 25 years. Music was the entirety of my childhood. It was MTV, sitting at the radio waiting for a song to come on so I could copy it to a cassette, buying records, then tapes, then CDs, spending endless hours learning and/or writing songs. Then, I went large swaths of my adult years ignoring music. My taste for it, for its presentation, for its substance, (or lack thereof) soured. I drive for a living yet almost never turned my stereo on. All the stuff I listened to when I was younger became indigestible. I took a long hiatus from music. No live music. No playing instruments. I was completely burnt out on it. Eventually what brought me back was stumbling upon different genres I would rarely listen to before. More novelties than mainstays for me. Whereas I was primarily into guitar-driven rock, I found myself going deeper into rap, electronic, jazz, R&B, Latin, classical, fusion, chiptune, etc… things that would not interest my social groups or musical peers, and it reignited my interest. While I thought I had tired of music, what I had really tired of was being put in a box. I had tired of the formula of songwriting that lends itself to general listenability and consumption. That’s not to say I was completely vanilla in my tastes or that they weren’t relatively broad, but that my tastes had stagnated, and while my access to music increased with broader internet access, like it has for all of us, actually finding music became more difficult. Now, over the last 10 years or so, my passion has been reignited, my appreciation for some of the music I might have steered away from in the past has become more open. Whether it’s Snarky Puppy, J Dilla, Dave Brubek, Air, or any number of acts that would’ve been out of my direct line of accessibility, I’ve come across such incredible music by abandoning certain sensibilities, by listening instead of looking to make judgements. I stopped looking at the whole painting and rather sought the individual brushstrokes, and not only did it open my mind to new music, but it allowed me to go back to so much music I’d abandoned and find joy in it again. I do think it’s very possible to become burnt out on music, especially when it consumes a majority of a life, but I also think that stepping outside of constrained listening patterns and habits can refresh the joy that brought us there in the first place.

I knew that douche was fake, the first time i saw him. You're right. He MUST have been passionate at some point.

He obviously doesn’t have interest in music, because he’s not a musician (serious musician) or serious musician listener. Makes sense.

I didn't know until yesterday that he even quit KZbin and I don't know what he did or what the situation is so I feel like I'll need to look up what's going on but I take it he's saying he just made videos about music to make some quickish Money? I don't know I'm confused

How about the fact he was in his 30’s dating a teenager.

He met her when she was either 16 or 17, and told his friends proudly they were dating when she turned 18. He himself was 35 and married her when he was 37. So... yeah, pretty fucking creepy.

@@sumspring4112 True, and he left his at the time also 30 something year old girlfriend that put up with his drug addiction a couple of months after his now wife turned 18 and "officially" started dating her(but he knew her and hang out with her before she turned 18 and I'm pretty sure they were already together then, but still creepy anyway)

I think he’s trying to portray himself as a mastermind. Dude definitely had a music phase. But he’s probably sick of it all (no pun intended) now. Lol

I've watched a lot of videos from The Punk Rock MBA and some from Finn's second channel, now I just heard the interview and this is what I think: I think it's bullshit. What I really think is that he just got tired of people taking him way too seriously and getting mad from the content on both his main channel (which sought to be more serious and objective and, thus, may have offended some) and his secondary channel (where he mainly talked just crap that was supposed to be fun stuff, something more personal, which of course was gonna offend some more). It's just him saying "You know what? Fuck you people, I'm out". Was he just in it for the money? Maybe it started to be like that at some point, but I don't think it was from the beginning. I mean, no matter how profitable it may potentially be, you just don't start an entire project (which by the way requires a lot of time and dedication) if you're not even slightly interested in its contents. I do believe, by the way, that he started losing interest in producing videos and having to find topics for each of them and, most importantly, to do the research. Because yeah, I've read many people claiming that he was a fraud, that he basically copy-pasted from Wikipedia sometimes. Okay, he's no expert, I can believe that.... So what? Maybe there was some inaccuracy here and there, and even a lack of authenticity, but it's not that he just talked nonsense or that he didn't know shit about what he was talking about. I think you can have your channel and talk and share your opinion on stuff without necessarily being a fucking encyclopedia but knowing or at least doing the research you need to, and I think he did. TL;DR he just grew tired of making videos and got bored of dealing with certain people, so he sent it all to hell to stir the hornet's nest because he knew it would happen, and now he must be laughing about it.

getting into an industry you're initially passionate about for long enough can definitely wear you out or turn you off to it (I hate my day job for example), but I don't think "I have no interest in music" is an honest or even remotely reasonable copout

There’s NO WAY he doesn’t like music. Him “bowing out” from making music content (no matter the reason) is on him and he’s totally within his rights for the decision but lying about the reason is very sus. Makes him look like a dope

People should not be shocked. I write scripts for large KZbin channels with millions of viewers and diehard communities. The "hosts" view you as one thing a $ sign. In my est 75% of *all* content creators either 1) liked it & then started BS'ing or 2) They were "personalities" in it for "the bag" from the start.

He likes to use negativity to build things - a favorite strategy for public figures and entertainers these days. Ending his channel was purely from being burnt out. He out grew music as a profession. Saying "I don't like music" is his cyanical goodbye. No body got played, he's just moving on. I do think it would be better to just be honest than to say something that is a complete fabrication based on the career he built.
@withinthrall1445Күн бұрын
I don't believe he did it purely for money, because if he was going for money, I feel he would have gone for trending hip hop artists and newer pop groups. Those are the ones with the bigger fanbases and I feel would have been a much faster way to meet any financial goal he set for himself. Dude wrote music blogs well before he made his channel. He admitted multiple times to read every single comment. And he reads all the negative ones. I feel like he burned himself out because he was trying everything with his content to avoid criticism, but you inevitably can't. I think he grew to resent it due to some serious allegations, and the second he had a chance to hang it up without putting himself in a bad financial spot, he took it.

I personallu think he is trolling everyone and checking out. What better way to wipe your hands completely. Leave everyone trolled and burn the building down. He seemed sick and tired of it and pulled the plug. Saying he didnt care and just read from wiki is BS. He trolled the enternet and said good bye as he lit the fire. Thats pretty clear.

I dunno man. For supposedly being super into the punk/hardcore/metal scene, all of Finn's analysis of other bands has been purely on metrics of marketability and monetary success. He knows that folks in this scene have lots of opinions so it's bound to boost engagement if he makes controversial takes on bands who are considered scene-darlings. He just showed us who he is, an empty suit in punk cosplay.

I can't say I was the biggest fan of Finn-- there were takes he had that I didn't jive with, but others that I did. But it was all under the assumption that he was another content creator who wanted to put their opinions out there for music they enjoyed. Especially in punk, you want a raw, no-fucks given mentality. Finn spat in the face of that. While he definitely made bank on it--and I can't blame anyone for wanting to make bank--I have lost any and all respect for him.

This is not shocking. He has said numerous times in his tier videos that he does not like certain bands, but he creates videos about them because that is what is popular. Finn said that he hated melodeath but then had Anders Frieden on for an interview right after the Album Forgone came out. It is youtube, and youtube is an algorithm. Even video game youtubers have said it as well. Metal Jesus Rocks said that he loves talking about old big box PC games, but those videos do not as well as a a console like the Nintendo 64. This is all a career is for some people. Give me the money and that is it. I am glad Finn reached his financial goals, but the time doing all those videos is time he cannot get back. Money comes and goes but time is forever gone. His first video was post six over six years ago on his channel. Who knows what channel he had before this. Basically he spent seven years doing something he hated. How many hours did Finn spend editing videos? Willingly every dime he made making videos was worth it because his time and health are gone for life. Marketing is not bad as long as the product provides value to people in some way. It is when you force things down people's throat that it becomes a problem. When the product is terrible or does not do as advertised, The magnifying glass for the original Gameboy is best example of false advertising just to take people's money. Finn did what older millennials, gen xers, and boomers have done for decades. They worked a job for material gain. I grew up as upper middle class, but my father did not care about his health. He killed himself slowly by eating himself to death. My father eventually passed away from heart failure.

Bad take man Marketing goes ALONG SIDE a product That burger chain uses marketing to get you to buy that burger If that burger is bad, no amount of marketing is going to get the burger brought long term Finn has basically come out and said he has no interest in his "burger", he just churned out shit burgers all these years and called us fools for buying that shit burger As far as I can tell marketing has absolutely nothing to do with this situation
