For future pregnancies and for those who might not know, it is mandatory to supplement ourselves with folic acid. It’s not enough from food. As soon as we know about our pregnancy we must supplement with folic acid.

Hi Ana, I'm Finn who was interviewed in this video. One thing I wish I made more clear was that my wife was very disciplined in taking folic acid supplements on top of her diet even before the pregnancy. But unfortunately the cause is unknown for the condition of anencephaly. Even if you are on the recommended dose this may not be enough, therefore for those that have had a baby with a neural tube defect, they recommend taking higher than the recommended dose of folic acid for future pregnancy which is 5mg as opposed to the recommended 400ug.
