@gfg_horseman71595 жыл бұрын
The wing is in the wrong spot and not at the right angle to actually be effective, Fin knows that. He mentioned in the last video that the company that makes the wing contacted him and gave him the info on where it should go and at what angle. These videos are weeks behind actual time (because the man is busy). If he ever mounts the wing permanent, I expect that it will go in the right spot at the right angle, then we should see a noticeable increase in cruising fuel econ. Shit, when that wing starts doing its job the truck might get 11mpg or better with that smog era 454. Im pretty interested to see it happen myself.

Chump Johnson it’s a U.K. 2003 DAF lf45 7.5 tonne ex bread delivery truck on springs, it gets about 18mpg, but I am guessing the us gallon conversion. They are geared for economical start stop city driving, fine for an over heavy camper conversion. No putting pics of my vehicle on the internet, so sorry. But they all look the same, so google it. Only 150 horsepower, but it will sit all day at 60, I never drive faster as the economy goes down hill really really fast plus the cops get all stoppy, it is a private HGV, so not speed limited, but the cops always stop me when going faster.

I had a 23' class C motorhome, about 11000#, pulling a 7000# 24' trailer full of racing karts and could expect to average about 7 mpg. It was a Ford 460cid with EFI all stock. While the tranny had overdrive, it actually got better mileage turning the OD off. And overall it felt happier not in OD. Don't know how fast you're going down the road, but typically I wasn't faster than 65mph. Better aero will help in the flat lands, but weight is what kills you in the climb. Now my 7.3 diesel F250 can get 14mpg pulling the same trailer.

Much as I like a gas guzzler, you need to drop rpm on the freeway for a start, 1. Your carb seems spot on but like you said it might have some seriously lazy timing, maybe Fuel Injection might help a bit. 2. Lockup convertor and a gear vendors, Not sure how the gm/chubby option is for a lockup od tranny behind a 454 I'm sure something can be managed, If it'll pull a od gear on a tranny a gear vendors might not be a bad way to go. 3. I'd add headers and a larger exhaust and keep it quiet some 3 inch pass thru muffs and a x pipe and some quiet muffs in the back would probably help more then you think. 4. Someone suggested Higher Compression, I'd agree with that but not knowing if you have flattops or dishes and how big the chambers are now.. it's hard to guess where your compression would end up. 5. A more truck profiled cam, who doesn't love a little idle. 6. The ultimate cure like someone mentioned is a diesel, GM seems to make an all right engine or you could drop a ford.. err dodge cummins in and go that route since you already have the expertise in that. 7. Grin and bear it because if you could get 10-12mgp I'd be really impressed with that box on wheels.

FYI the 18:1 pegged air fuel on decel is probably correct. These ecm's use DFCO (decell fuel cut off) strategy. When you let off the gas and the rpms are in correct range, the ecm turns off the injectors and the engine is basically an air pump until you touch the throttle again.

Our '78 454 developed a huge gas mileage problem that was the HEI pickup coil. It didn't throw smoke, idled great still. Put a timing like on it after it's hot and make sure the curve is still right. Ours the timing either stopped advancing early, or actually retarded over 3k rpm. For trailer towing a tall dual plane aluminum intake was worth 2 mpg. (paid for itself in one road trip) I hope you find whatever your mpg gremlin is!

Couple of things about the wheel stand. If you have never walked on the starting line at a NHRA National event, you have no idea how sticky that patch of concrete is. Shit just hooks up!. There is something that can be done to avoid a wheel stand like that. It's counter intuitive but will work. Simple leave at a higher engine rpm. It will force the clutch to slip more & not pull the engine down. Once the clutch is locked up, all the power will force the pinion to climb the ring gear. The trick with a pedal clutch car, IMO, is getting is past the tree before the clutch is locked up.
