About saying please in Finnish - I usually use conditionals with a question word so that "yksi kalja" ("one beer") becomes something like "sais(in)ko yhden kaljan?" ("could I get a beer"). Then just thank them afterwards. Really feel like "ole kiltti" is something parents say to their kids when they want to sound slightly passive-aggressive (which is usually said like "voisitko olla niin kiltti" and is basically equivalent to "would you be so kind"). The way I've seen it be taught in places has usually been "yksi kalja kiitos" which isn't something you'd usually see people use, it sounds pretty dry really

Technically "saisinko" is "would I get". But I agree, "ole kiltti" has a bit of a nagging tone to it. I wouldn't use that as a customer anywhere. "Would I get" is the polite way to ask/request something. I do hear (and use) "Öö, kahvi, kiitti" or something to that effect pretty often, and I've never seen anyone seem upset about it. Maybe beer is different since there are usually options about what kind of beer, I don't know. But I've certainly heard the same style, "laita karhu, kiitti". Some casual chat mght take place, but it's often separated from making the order itself.

@@TheRawrnstuff yeah that's true but I meant more as a translation rather than a direct transliteration , I was thinking that in English you'd probably rather say "could i get a coffee please" than "would i get a coffee please". And yes it's kind of difficult to say that one phrasing would be applicable every time it's really dependant on the context. The "saisinko" can also be substituted with basically anything that fits the situation. Many times I'd probably say something like "pystyisi(ks/tkö) antamaan mulle xyz" ("could you give me xyz"). It's really tricky to say anything because all of these are so dependant on context,. For example,"laitaks yhden karhun" I'd probably read as kind of rude if someone just came to the bar and that was the first thing they said whilst it'd be perfectly alright if we'd have been chatting for a bit and they said it casually. Many things also depend on where you live, I'm from up north so something that could be rude here could very well be normal down south and vice versa. But yeah there's definitely many ways to not be rude in Finnish when asking for something

The Orimattila's coat of arms scythe comes from Orimattila being big agricultural "city" and the horse from having over 200 horses in the horse training center. I've also heard a story about the Orimattila name. Ori = stallion and Mattila is a finnish surname, so the story is something about Mattila having a black stallion(Ori) but can't really remember if there's anything more to this

The story: Mattila (they had the biggest farm, land and so on) had a sort of famous stallion (ori). And to decide where to build a church (very important at the time) they decided to tie a huge rock for that stallion to pull. Where the stallion would stop with said rock, they would build the church which would be the center of their town. And so they did. Which is why it is said that the town's name comes from that famous Ori (who decided the church's place) and the most influential family in town who owned said stallion, the Mattila family.

Which is also why there was a place (it had a bar, restaurant, hair dresser and few other things) called Musta ori (The Black stallion) honoring the town's original black stallion. They had the best honeychicken. I still dream of it sometimes.

The equivalent of "please" in Finnish is just "Kiitos" (lit. "Thank you") "Yksi olut, kiitos" is in essence the same as "One beer, please" "Ole kiltti" (lit "be nice") is the more pleading version of please, like you're begging someone to do something, you wouldn't really say it when ordering or asking for something in casual conversation. The other option is the "-ko" suffix, eg. "Saisinko yhden oluen?" (Lit. "Could I have one beer?") Which is also a polite way of ordering something and more common in casual conversation when asking someone for something

Kouvola has gotten a little too bad rap for their architecture. I’ve seen people always post photos from there that look like they were from Pripyat. Haven’t been there but my train stopped there and had a short look of the centre. I was so disappointed as it was full of colour!
