I actually really liked Envy, because of how she drives Riley to think about her reputation. Envy can drive us to think about how others think of us. As long as this isn’t taken to an extreme, this can help motivate us to make positive changes. Envy wants Riley to be confident and popular with her peers. So if Riley gets jealous of something, she has the choice to either dwell on the feeling, or do something to go achieve what she admires in others.

There wasn't anything sad about the movie, nor any reason I should've felt triggered by some scenes either, but thats part of what makes a good movie I suppose. It's like the viewer was put in the p.o.v. of "riley's moral/true self." Lead to any scene with moral breaking or character degrading of the non-emotion characters, feel so very wrong.

The new emotions resemble the older ones, but more extreme and reckless in a way. Yes, Riley have used sarcasm then, but she never used it against her friends which is what Ennui did. Meanwhile Envy, she's the one influencing anxiety, like suggesting what to do regardless if it goes against Riley's moral compass. Envy here makes sense to me, I know why she was here in this sequel: to keep anxiety on its toes. Which makes sense because, admit it, there are times when we look up to someone so much and envy their feats, that we fear "I might never be as good as them" and it will bring you a lot of anxiety. Embarassment, aside from helping sadness, is the counterpart of the latter. It keeps Riley's social cues grounded, he was not a fully fleshed out character here though. Ennui is much more than the sarcasm. She is disgust's counterpart, but not really the same. But with so much anxiety, the other emotions just didn't have the time to fully exhibit their importance in Riley's mind. Which made sense for me.

When we got to learn that envy was one of the new emotions, I figured she would probably be a Driving Force, To push Riley into adapting to her new surroundings. The definition of Envy is Discontentment with one’s own Qualities and possessions, and a major part of the movie is that Riley is at risk of losing her sense of self because of anxiety trying to look out for her by dictating the right way to fit in, while envy is giving Anxiety things to look up to and what needs to be done to fit in regardless if it goes against Riley’s own morals and values.

Inside Out 2 is one of the best Pixar sequal since Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 when it came to connecting the audience, and giving us a good plot to the storyline. I wanted to spoilers until I got to see the movie to allow for a good impression. This is no different than watching Dreamworks Puss in Boots: The Last Wish where it connects with both children and adults when it came to explaining mature subject we all go through in our lifetime. We as humans grow and change everyday and those sophisticated emotions are a great addition as we age. Instead of supressing young minds for the sake of earning a profit for the film, these films educate us in real life situations like having an anxiety attack, fitting in, addressing our moralities, going through the stages of grief, separation, transition, etc. and still educating us in an entertaining matter. I would definitely reccommend seeing the movie and staying for the post credit scene, you'll thank us later. 😉

It wasn’t necessarily just about “releasing control”. I took it as, a big part of anxiety is the need to be perfect and feeling like you have to do everything right to be “good enough” and lovable. The point in the end being that no one is perfect and that’s okay. We are all multifaceted human beings with flaws and positive qualities and to have a strong sense of self we have to accept that and love ourselves despite our flaws, and with our flaws, the way we love others. Anxiety, in that sense, is in a large part because of perfectionism, insecurity and a fear of the future and yes also a need to control everything.

I have a few thoughts about this movie that I have seen twice now... 1 I love it just as much as the original and I would gladly watch another movie set in the world of inside someones mind again. 2 Ennui is one of my favorites and seems like they are meant to keep things simple but also the one to "play it cool" and one of those is creating the sar-chasm in a more dramatic way than Disgust in the first movie. Embarrassment works in hand with Sadness as it does irl but even without Sadness helping Embarrassment is there almost to make you ashamed of your actions especially if it's in public. Envy works as the "I see something I want now how can I work to achieve it?" like the hair or being respected athlete like Val. 3 while this movie is less impactful than the first one and was more grounded in its message and exploration of the world it is still impactful in showing a young audience that anxiety is a part of you, there isn't a way to get rid of it even if our anger wants to punt it out the window into the dump of forgotten memories. It is something we all experience and even shows how you can calm down from an anxiety attack feeling something around you, hearing, smelling and seeing what is around and happening right now because your mind is racing and this can sometimes help in reminding yourself where you are and what is happening. 4 this is more a detail I noticed but Anxiety describes Fears role as "protecting Riley from the stuff she can see, while I protect her from the stuff she can't see." and while Anxiety is in control during the hockey game she mentions how she didn't see the girl she ran into. Anxiety got such tunnel vision on scoring a goal that she wasn't aware of her surroundings. something that (might) not have happened if Fear and the others were kept around.
@JamesDavy20095 ай бұрын
I and several others believe that Anxiety and Fear would work well as collaborators with the latter learning from the former and getting a better idea of when to step in based on experience.

There's a few areas that could have been expanded on but because the arc and story was a little more complicated, they spent more time making sure the main parts of the movie was satisfactory. Also, while i'm kinda worried pixar pumping out sequels, I'm just glad they stuck the landing on Inside Out 2. The first one is one of my top 2 movies ever, and I'll be content for now knowing the 2nd didn't ruin those memories for me. Do i think its better than the original? No. Do I think anxiety was a vital character and showed what alot of people experience and go through on a regular basis and can relate to? Yes. As you mentioned in your review other parts felt not as thought out to me or dull. The sarcasm felt like it didn’t really have an answer? Like maybe they should speak sarcastically to get it to come across nicely. But none of them thought of that. And the one worker warned them what it was and the workers on the other side just… didnt know? Never experienced one before? Also the throwing out of memories that they didnt like to the back of the mind felt like a continuity error. The long term memory already lets memories fade it doesnt want to keep. So if theres something that made riley anxious or embarrassed (which may be more complicated for the original emotions to understand) why didnt they still keep it? Joy and sadness both went to headquarters and saw how the memories worked.. and for that matter why didnt they just try to but them in the place where they fade? It doesnt make sense again continuity errors. Comparing anxiety and joy is fair and they both had alot of growth to do wanting to both be fully in charge of riley. I think both of them are determined leaders but again its how you balance everything to make it better. I didnt like how easily rileys beliefs could change either, and how them being flooded with the more negative ones changed her personality into many different quotes, i feel like it should have been a statement. Like “Im Riley and sometimes I am a good friend, but sometimes Im not, and I am strong, and I am a good person, ect…” Making it flow into one another so she can still affirm herself if that makes sense? The beliefs are obviously just put in place to change the core memories this time and we didnt see much about her islands other than a slight overview. I dont know. I think some things in this movie were good like the anxiety attack and anxiety standing there, her somehow having minions and having them think of different things that could happen (but again when did she recruit these workers?), and both joy and anxiety saying its important for her to have all of her memories and not to supress anything she experiences because thats what makes her herself. Other than that things were pretty grey and In my life experience my parents have alot more anxiety than myself at times which in turn can cause me to have it and I wouldve love to seen that dynamic implemented a bit more.

Really tackle something big that can happen and see how emotionally taxing it can be. At the end they could show flashes of Riley's kid growing up, Riley finding a partner if she wants one, and ending with her kid being the same age she was when she and her family moved in the first movie. You can get a good story and end it full circle too). I was fearful of this movie because of the new emotions, but I am happy to hear it's been so well received.

Another reason the anxiety attack scene hit me so hard is not just the anxiety stuff but how the core five emotions actually get back to HQ. How do they do it? By riding a literal avalanche of thoughts. And as they get back to the main area, those hundreds, if not millions of thoughts, take hold. They race up to HQ until they get stuck. It's only when Joy lets them through to become part of everything that things even out. As someone who has anxiety issues, i can relate so much with both attacks and racing thoughts. It all feels like way too much to handle sometimes. I really need to learn the grounding technique..

Ennui had enough jokes that landed, plus seemed useful at keeping things simple and not trying the same thing for too long. Embarrassment forming a rapport with Sadness, plus a couple good jokes, was enough to warrant the inclusion. Totally agree that Envy didn't do anything. Envy could have been cut so easily. I also think when the OG emotions were banished, Anxiety likely would have kept Fear around, as Fear and Anxiety can work together easily. It could have given Fear a bit of an arc, because Fear would have to choose sides from time to time.

Envy is there to play "support" to Anxiety by pointing out things that make Riley feel inadequate thus more things to be anxious about.

Are there tiny emotions inside joy? If so, how many levels deep does it go? Does tiny Joy-joy have an even tinier joy at her helm? As for the world building. ANXIETY is a type of fear. So she should have been fears, daughter, with disgust as her mother. Emotions mature and develop. The show should have kept that in mind.

i think Embarrassment is Anxiety’s purpose. Anxiety is there to avoid embarrassment, but then that would taint embarrassment as a “bad” emotion- but then THAT would defeat the purpose of the first movie (that all emotions help us)? i think that is the only major problem aside from Ennui and Envy not having a lot of reason to be there. (Referring to the new Emotions)

The anxiety attack was my favourite scene in the movie Not only was it visually impressive but the message it conveyed was perfect, and the way Anxiety yelled at the beginning of the tornado was so genuine it was freaky And then the bit after that made me genuinely cry When Riley's new sense of self formed and she had all these conflicting beliefs about herself, I really felt that This movie hit way too close to home and I am absolutely here for it Well done to the Pixar team here

About the new emotions, I've thought about it, and a lot of them could be, with some stretching, argued to be feesable through combination or just MATURING of the existing emotions. Actually, Anxiety is the MOST guilty of this. I don't see what Fear is supposed to do now that Anxiety is there. But Embarassment is really Fear + Sadness, Ennui is basically the same as apathy (lack of emotion), and Envy...is just so niche of an emotion, also kind of Anger + Joy (not worth having anything more at least). Another issue is that some of these emotions should have or WERE present in the last movie. Suppressed emotions is not a new idea to this movie, because that's what was happening when the panel went black in the last movie. Riley was suppressing her emotions. "Ennui" is basically the lack of emotions, which btw, sarcasm does NOT fit into. Lack of emotions should mean *lack of emotions*, and sarcasm is actually used to, once again, suppress emotions. It's not something that comes from apathy or "ennui." I believe envy exists MORE in kids than teenagers. It's also a more child-ish form of joy, with acting out upon that envy bringing anger into the mix. Riley just doesn't show Envy much, and she STILL didn't show Envy much, except when it didn't make much sense. As I already said, Embarassment is Fear + Sadness, simple as. That or it's Anxiety, but Anxiety IS a form of Fear to me.

envy invites riley to new stuff, like how riley did the hair thing, but still can lead them to go to new bad things, while anxiety does the same thing but is a bit more scared about it, but then again that's literally what anxiety is with every other emotion if you really REALLY think about it.

The fact that embarrassment is capable of stoping and holding all the other emotions is so powerful and really make me thought how much we stop ourselves for not looking ridiculous infront of others.

4:09 Emotions aren't meant to really come off like parents...but I think what this movie gets at is something that is true, which is that kids are more controlled by their emotions, but as we grow older, humans are better capable of having control themselves through, yes, a "sense of self."

I watched it, loved it mostly but my biggest problem was the lack of Core Memories. I was worried they'd use the same concept twice but the surprised me with the new concept true self. Fantastic idea but you can't tell me it wasn't a core memory when Riley made an amazing score and got a coach to come up and tell them to try out for a team. This is just as big as crying on your first day of school. I wish they held hands with the old concept but didn't leave it completely in the dust.

"Envy why are you here?" Envy is Anxiety's enabler. Whenever Anxiety asked "Hmm. Too much?", Envy said "fuck that WE'RE GOING IN!" It's also why Anxiety has teal eyes (Envy), just like how Joy has blue eyes (Sadness).

coolest thing Inside Out 2 brought out is that Anxiety is not a really bad thing, as long as there's rational emotions present during "planned out anxiety" events but as soon as anxiety is in total control of situation, it wont do anything good since its only way of solving things is just to keep "overthinking"

8:19 envy is the positive side and not the bad jealoussy side to help people strive to be better than Their idols, embarrasment makes sure that people don't get too prideful by making them regret stuff, and ennui (french for boredom) just exists

For everyone here. If you've in theraphy, you'll realize a ton of concepts in this movie is so much deeper than a majority of people realize. A lot of it is graduate level psychology, and this movie presented it in such a genius way with metaphors. Just look at the first one and how the main characters are literally "bottled emotions " as she grows older by hitting puberty. So much more.

Envy is too much of a yes-man or henchman to anxiety in the movie and there’s not really much more purpose to her than that

Envy is the physical embodiment of changing, of Riley wanting to develop and move herself beyond what she's already got Embarrassment is meant to be Riley remembering her most painfully cringe memories and learning from them Ennui is meant to represent Riley always keep herself entertained wnd fulfilled, so that she's never feeling unfulfilled The others represent similar things Joy is the representation of always keeping herself happy and caring for herself Sadness is being aware of everything she's doing if it makes her feel sad, it helps her prepare for the bad so she can work back up to the good Disgust helps her keep herself protected from things that might harm her, like gross stuff, such as food or even things in her surroundings that might endanger her Anger is to keep herself justified if she ever needs to let loose, he helps her stay strong and resistant even in the face of danger Fear keeps her on her toes and always aware of things that might endanger her And Anxiety, she helps Riley be aware of her future and the possible scenarios she'll need to be ready for any choices she'll make, it'll help keep her safe so long as she keeps herself active and prepared

This is the only instance where a sequel actually did Pixar & Disney some justice. I really didn't expected it to be good but I really had a nice time. Disney & Pixar should stay away from controversies and ideology and just play it safe with movies like this.

Anxiety is the emotion I relate to the most actually. I'd say she, joy and sadness are my main drivers (That's why the inside out movies really work well for me I guess). I'm not very envious or quick to anger, and generally not very fearfull (unless i'm looking down something really high or get starteled by something). Now Digust pops up quite alot, but is not so much a driver as a judging commentator. Now Enui and Embarresment they are my least favorite emotions to experience. I don't want them at the wheel or at least I have enough selfconfidence that Emberasment is not such a big guy in my mind. With me Anxiety/joy keep planning things to keep Enui away from the drivers seat as much as possible. Sadness is always allowed to just to her thing whenever she feels like it. With me Enui takes over if I don't care about something at all. And .......I care about things alot........so. My sense of self really revolves around being honest, hardworking and responsible. I have in the past desribed my feelings of stress as a little person running circles and screaming inside my head. And I've had my fair share of anxiety attacks, but anxiety has also helped me alot during puberty. Making sure I didn't procrasitate too long, help choose a career path I would like and that would be good for my future. Kept me from spending to much money and decide on what to prioritise. Anxiety also spurrs me on to go see a doctor or a dentist when I suspect something might be wrong. Honestly I really like these movies, because they make me think about my own emotions and how I deal with them. And because of this movie I realized just how much I let Anxiety take the wheel.

Well, then , seeing her crisis midle-age or the crisis of becoming independant. To the old stage of life or the "crisis" of being a mother and starting a family are good concepts and make the sequels of Inside out legitime. Then, let's hope, they have a good storyline and that the crisis that Raley faces can be close to the personal experiences of the audience

I feel like a batter use of envy if it is one is make envy a twist villian I know Disney’s record of “twist villians” are soooo good but they would have to hint at her at being evil then when joy talks anxiety out of her ways envy gets well mad or envious and then shows her true colors but that’s just my opinion
