As a retired LEO And 35 year firearms instructor I can tell you that I have fired 1000’s of Fiocchi rounds . They are as reliable as any premium ammunition out there. I have issued it as duty ammo so that alone should tell you that it doesn’t fail very often. Although I have fired many other premium ammo I can say that they all have dropped a round here and there. Fiocchi ammo is good for any purpose you want to use it for. Great video, I enjoyed it. Thank you for your time.

At first, I was dubious about your claims, but then I read your screen name of ‘Cecil Higgins’ and immediately my minds eye conjured up images of a 1930s private investigator shrouded in a thick layer of cigar smoke. Mister Cecil Higgins, (private I) does not take any wooden nickels from no-body no-how and would not steer me wrong. I now trust Fiocchi ammunition.

A friend of mine in 2018 was on a range with me firing his 22mag. He kept getting misfires. The firing pen was just barley making contact with the round. I started walking down range after a misfire in which he waited about 10 seconds. He opened the bolt pulling the cartrage back about a half an inch when the bullet went off. It blew brass in his face and the butt end blew off. The bullet cleared the barrel. I turned around being 10 yards or so down range when it went off. I was glad to see he had it pointed off to the side. The oil turned into a grease preventing the firing pen to move as far forward as it would have normally. The brass only left slight red marks on his face and yes we were wearing classes. Also I have had two delayed firings when I was in the military. Both the shots with less then a half a second, but a noticeable time delay. Thanks for the vid's always look forward to new vid's.

5:35 The problem is JHPs themselves. I suspect that Fed keeps the 10 mm and .40 SW in the same velocity range to maximize the expansion and penetration to meet FBI standards ... Federal's .40 caliber JHP bullet needs to go approx the same speed in a 10mm as the .40 to get the same results. If you look at the ballistic gel results on Lucky Gunner (for example) and blank out the caliber you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the best.40, .45, or 10mm hollow points. If everyone designs their bullets to perform the same in Gel - then 10mm vs .40 is a moot argument. IF I learned anything from Paul .. it's that the ammunition you choose matters the most.

Dylan Lewis I’d argue that the .300 is a compromise in all areas, limited by its case. That’s more like the .40S&W. The 10mm is more like the .308... there’s almost nothing that can be done with a pistol that the 10mm can’t do... And for those things there’s 460S&W. 😆 Similarly if a .308 won’t do it, you just need a more specialized big gun.

I've fired many thousands of rounds of Fiocchi ammunition, albeit in 9mm and .45 ACP, not 10mm, and that misfire you had, Paul is the very first I've ever seen or experienced. As to hangfires though, I do have direct personal experience with one, but in a much larger caliber. In the mid-late 70s, I was a USN Gunner's Mate stationed aboard an amphib equipped with four 3"/50 caliber twin mount DP gun mounts. My assigned mount was engaging a target one day (three 55 gallon drums banded together and painted orange with a smoke flare attached and pushed over the side). We were firing VT frag (variable time (little radar set in the fuse) fragmentation) at it when we had a misfire. These rounds are equipped with primers that are both electrical and percussion fired. Normally we just used electrical but protocol in the event of a misfire was to shift to percussion, try again, then back to electrical, try again, then the mount GM (me) got the fun of crawling under and opening the breech, grabbing the round (about 24 lbs.) and writing down all the info stenciled on the side showing the serial number, lot number, when it was refurbished, etc. and then dumping it over the side, all while properly cradling the round and protecting the primer with one hand. Yeah, you needed to grow extra arms. On this occasion, I grabbed one of the second loaders (guys carry ammo from the ship's magazine to the mount) and told him to write it all down in my little green notebook while I held the round. Evidently, I'd picked someone who was a little slow in the reading and writing department because he was taking forever and that round was getting heavy. After a couple of minutes of this, I got frustrated and just chucked it over the side. It detonated when it hit the water. Not the explosive charge, the primer and propellant. We later found a few pieces of the brass case scattered around on the flight deck. Is this the same as a small arms round being a hangfire instead of a misfire? No. Is it relevant to this video? You be the judge.

Regarding the dud round, "I" definitely would have waited a few extra seconds before clearing it, but that isn't because I'm so experienced with shooting, it's the exact opposite. I'm aware that delayed detonation can happen, but I'm not experienced enough to know exactly how unlikely it is to happen in this scenario, so I'd be afraid enough to wait a few seconds. I'm sure that even though Paul addressed it immediately, it won't stop the hoards of the RO equivalent of keyboard warriors from chiming in to tell Paul how wrong he was for pocketing the round. Meanwhile, Paul has so much more experience than almost all of us writing comments, that at this point, I'll just assume he knows what he's doing. If I see him do something that "I" think is wrong, my next thought is "he knows something I don't". And I'll also "ask" why he did something, rather that suppose that "my" way is right and Paul's is wrong. There was a video that Russel did on InRange a few months ago where he was demonstrating something with a magazine, and he wanted to have a full mag plus 1 in the chamber. So he inserted the mag, chambered a round, ejected the mag, topped it off, and reinserted. Now my first thought was "why not just drop one in the chamber, close the slide, and insert your full mag?". But instead of telling him he was wrong and stupid for going through the extra step, I asked if there was a reason he did it that way, because it's safe to assume that Russel Phagan knows more than I do. Russell and a few viewers replied and told me that closing the slide on a chambered round puts undue stress on the extractor, and can shorten its lifespan if you do it a lot. So instead of making an ass out of myself by jumping on the perceived opportunity to tell someone that they're wrong, I learned something new, and had a nice exchange with a few guys. If only more people conducted themselves in such a manner...
@bigsean24734 жыл бұрын

Paul, THANKS for another excellent video. I was especially glad that you “collaterally” mentioned the FTF with the good primer strike. Virtually, every resource I’ve read or heard cautions us to “keep the muzzle pointed downrange and to wait a few minutes before clearing the dud round.” Of course, such caution doesn’t cause any harm on the practice range. But it is rather silly; in any real world scenario, one will necessarily clear the chamber immediately and, like you, after personally experiencing many dozen (perhaps hundreds) of duds in 60 years, I have never had one “spontaneously detonate” (nor have i every had one fire when struck by the firing-pin or the striker a second time).

Paul, keep on kicking ass. You have a huge fan base; ignore the ign'ance. Thank you for 10mm auto video, buddy. 10 mm is my favorite pistol caliber (just an opine, commentators) "1: This is not a muzzle loader", with middle finger, "2: I have never seen a squib round fire 5 minutes later". Paul, you are the man.
@bretth63934 жыл бұрын
Since chronograph testing videos (including Paul's own) have shown that some typical 10mm is underloaded to 40s&w levels, it's logical for people to conclude that 10mm is one of those calibers for which the top shelf ammo is worth the extra cost. It's up there with 380acp as one of those calibers for which buying "hyper ammo" will actually give you something.

Thus was a really good one. Paul, know that the vast majority of comments, even those offering critique or disagreement, approve of and appreciate everything you do on this channel. So here are my comments: The smooth, subtle use of the middle finger in your commentary is always appreciated. Great job using the .40 comparisons to illustrate your point. Its funny how ammo makers will "download" a certain round for one caliber but not another. Sig seems to consistently make slow rounds for 40 S&W. Federal is all over the map for many calibers, but as a .40 fan it was gratifying somehow to see the hydrashok .40 compare well with the 10mm in the same round. Anyone making slowed down loads for 10mm is stealing from customers in my opinion. Why pay super premium price for a larger round requiring a bulkier, more expensive pistol when you can go lighter/smaller/cheaper and get the same performance. Underwood, along with Buffalo Bore and Double Tap, make some cool ammos with amazing power. Too bad they are prohibitively expensive and probably fall into that "precious" category you've described for most people who do buy them. I'd send you some ammo but I don't have anything interesting that you haven't already used in a video.

Awesome video again Paul! I've fired quite a bit of the Fiocchi ammo (mostly for practice and to get brass for hand load use) and I personally have not experienced any misfires like you did on the one round (4 guns I've used are: 1- 1911 Colt Delta, 1- 1911 Rock Island Ultra FS, 1- Springfield XDM, 1 Springfield XDM OSP). My accuracy results are similar to yours at 25 yards. The MagTech 10mm 180JHP is pretty good/fast for "cheap" 10mm JHP's too. My comment #1; Underwood loads REAL 10mm ammo. I'm sure you remember the days when most 10mm came out of the barrel about as hot as the Underwood stuff you tested. That's when 10mm was THE bad boy defense round for those who could handle the recoil (it still is!). The FBI even tried it back then. They've down-tuned 10mm for sissies in the last decade or so I guess... LoL... My comment #2: While Federal ammo is "usually" pretty good stuff for all intended purposes. For some reason, their 10mm Hydrashock ammo is sissy-ville loadings; always has been. While I've personally used box-stock Fed. .44Mag. and .357Mag. ammo to drop many a deer with a large revolver, I wouldn't even consider Hydrashock in 10mm for anything besides target use, and it's too darn expensive for that use anyway LoL.. My comment #3 about "hang-fire/misfire". I'm sure you being a huge shooting competitor, you are used to dealing with the semi-ridiculous "rule book safety delays" before opening a bolt on a gun (rifle) which experienced a failure to fire during a competition (usually somewhere around 30 second min. delay, sometimes more). Personally, I HAVE seen hang-fires happen with very old, probably improperly stored surplus mil-spec. ammo in both .50BMG and .30 Carbine. The .30 Carbine I've fired, the round went off at least 1 full second after the firing pin dented the primer! Multiple rounds in the "baggie full" I was given did this, so I stopped using it right away. Of course, that 1-second seems like an eternity when you are behind the trigger, but that was the worst hang-fire delay I've personally ever seen. Click........BOOM!. Anyway, You Da' Man once again Paul! Keep it up!

I'm glad to get some 'range therapy' watching Paul shoot. I've had to resort to shooting my old compound bow, and my daughters air rifle. don't want to use up my cache of ammo. pretty sad here in southwestern Pennsylvania even .22 ammunition is out of stock. saving our .22 ammo for fall rifle league and squirrel hunting. never thought we'd see 9mm and 5.56 and .223 this low. I was able to get a few boxes of 5.56 but I put them in the ammo can. - anyone else feeling the loss of range time? I learned the hard way years ago to save up ammunition but I'm afraid to use any out of the cache . my brother reloads but primers are in short supply because of the ammo manufacturers are using all available. hopefully we can get caught up - well back to the air rifle and bow. thanks for the video Paul !

Thanks for the info Paul. For years it was said the 10mm was “basically” a .41 magnum. I know you’ve done a presentation on “basically” so take that for what it’s worth. But from everything I’ve seen I think it’s a more accurate bet to say that the 10mm is “roughly equivalent” to a .357magnum. Load both with 180gr bullets with similar barrel lengths and you get similar numbers.
@masterkeep4 жыл бұрын
Back when they first came out with 10mm it was between the two in power, significantly more powerful than a .357 but significantly below .41. Significant might be a stretch.
@spyderxtra7774 жыл бұрын
masterkeep not really. Coopers original specification might have been a 200gr bullet at 1500fps but that was never achieved when in production. The currently produced “hot” ammo from doubletap, Buffalo bore etc is as hot as 10mm or .357mag has ever been or ever will be and the numbers are comparable on both the box flaps and real world chrono tests.
@masterkeep4 жыл бұрын
@@spyderxtra777 I agree that now they are essentially the same do to the development of bullet technology and hot loadings; however, the original 10mm loading did exceed the .357 magnum of the time and went into the lower loadings for .41 magnum.
@spyderxtra7774 жыл бұрын
masterkeep yep that’s what they always said.... except they were wrong. People were excited about the hot new 10mm round the fbi had cooked up and made up all kinds of stories and expectations about it. But really, it never surpassed .357mag in performance and never even came close to .41 mag. Regardless of what a gun shop clerk told a perspective buyer of that new colt delta back in the day. It wasn’t “basically a .41 magnum” back then and it isn’t now. And if you still don’t believe me, see if you can find some real world evidence of these mythical “back in the day” super powerful 10mm loadings that we seem to have forgotten how to make. I’ll wait here.
@masterkeep4 жыл бұрын
@@spyderxtra777 You are wrong. You are using today's loadings and not looking at it's original loads. It was loaded to much higher pressures than now and at that higher pressure it surpassed .357 in anything short of an 8 inch barrel. When you compare pistol size it did indeed reach into the low end .41 magnum loads and exceed .357.
