God I cry every time I swear, especially after she says "and he took my pearl and left an empty shell of me" And gets this angry emotional look on her face and bangs on the piano. Its humbling.

She was so young here, and so incredibly talented... a genius level of talent. There are ways to quantify a genius of math and logic, but no test to claim genius-ness of the emotional or creative realms. If such a model existed, I have no doubt she would be revered as one.
@HoyaSaxaSD

First, limit it to artists who actually write all their own lyrics. To me, so much more powerful to know the singer wrote the lyrics themselves. Second, if the singer not only wrote the lyrics, but also wrote all the music, you are much closer to the genius level (I’d say prodigy, in her case). To reach the end of the lyrics in Apple Music and see credits for one name, and one name only (the artist), is very impressive and satisfying to me. Third, if the lyrics and music are unique, moving, deep or open to many interpretations, and unforgettable, I think it’s safe to use genius. IMO, Bob Dylan is the epitome. And I have a feeling that Bob has heard and been very impressed with Ms. Apple’s albums.

When she sings 'But he washed me ashore and he took MY pearl" the my always is so sharp like a fish hook ripping through your mouth dragging yourself to her or like a dagger puncturing skin, she sings so sharply that my is so sharp I'm alluding to a comment I saw when I was a freshman in 2012 when I was fifteen and looking at the comments of her "Never Is A Promise" video and this one person said "That first understand is so powerful" or something like that ("Paper Bag" reference) of the sort and they were right and she has such a powerful voice and shows beautiful and her consonance is so powerful in such short notes its astounding. Fiona Apple will always one of my Inspirations for the rest of my life

Connor Brady - Ladygagafan111 Wow, that was so beautifully and lyrically spoken! What a wonderful way to interrupt the way many of us feel about Miss. Apples music and the way she is able to use her God-given talent to reach out to us! I truly could not have said anything better! Thank you for that and God bless and keep you!

Felt like a jumper cable on my heart hearing this live. Had to look it up to watch her play & sing because it’s really quite masterful how the melodies and voice interact. Sounds like a watercolor painting to me. Disassociation that can happen after trauma…tells that story perfectly. Fiona is a treasure…she must be protected at all costs. 🍎🔥

so eloquently stunning. the piano chords hit me hard then the xylophone tempers it. understated, lucid poetry as such. it's calm under the waves. Fiona is a singular, artistic songwriter. her lyrics resonate into the deepness of rare souls.Tidal left me lingering for more. i once knew a girl in college who was raped .she transferred. we chatted anonymously on the mainframe before the internet was born. it all comes full circle with "Sullen Girl".

Days like this, I don't know what to do with myself All day and all night I wander the halls along the walls And under my breath I say to myself "I need fuel to take flight" And there's too much going on But it's calm under the waves In the blue of my oblivion Under the waves In the blue of my oblivion Is that why they call me a sullen girl, sullen girl They don't know I used to sail the deep and tranquil sea But he washed me 'shore And he took my pearl And left an empty shell of me And there's too much going on But it's calm under the waves In the blue of my oblivion Under the waves In the blue of my oblivion Under the waves In the blue of my oblivion It's calm under the waves In the blue of my oblivion

i love fiona, i really do. this may come across fangirl-ish but i truly feel shes one of the few honest musicians out there. I can't even point it out, because there are other singers i like, and i dont think they are bad songwriters or that the composition is lacking, but her songs hit different for me, even if i dont relate to them. But its more like im listening to her. And she comes across as honest in everything she does, her lyrics, her beats, and her views towards fame and the industry. and really, i know that she doesnt like being famous. for her, writing is personal, but this is just a job shes really good at ( said so herself in an interview.

I saw her in Memphis, TN April 10th, 2000. This was her tour to promote "When the pawn breaks...". She was at the Orpheum and I had 3rd row, center section. I was maybe 20 ft from her at the piano. Hands down, the single greatest concert I've ever been to. The last song of her encore was "I Know".

"Fiona Apple Rocks" explained the early date in another thread: "This was one of the 4 Sony Showcase shows where she only played a few songs, then her first full show was at Ronnie Scotts London (a tiny venue with 250 seats) 2 weeks before the album release. So they were less promotional events and more about preparation for the real tour in much bigger US venues."

I like this song. More so in another place & time in my journey. It would have made me cry a few years back when I was going through some dark days, struggling with life, myself & people. Right now though I can't sit through it without cringing, just saying. I definitely understand though what she's expressing and why others are drawn to it's melancholy words & melody. Best to all!
