NBC prefers mediocrity. They let Letterman go and preferred Leno for the Tonight show. They fuck over Conan in favor of Leno again. And now it's Fallon, who is not only as milquetoast and predictable as Leno was, but is also unwatchable, followed by Seth Myers, whom I'm sure is a nice guy but that show is equally unwatchable. Not to mention almost 20 years of Carson Daly. Long gone are the days of Carson, Letterman, Costas and Conan. Late night TV is dead and irrelevant now.

Leno being #1 (after landing the first interview with Hugh Grant because Grant's publicists knew Leno would provide what they needed) was again, mediocrity selling. Being #1 has nothing to do with quality. Letterman's monologs produced great laughter. Leno's produced applause. "Applause kills comedy" - Colin Quinn. Other things that left as #1: Big Bang Theory, Friends, Two And A Half Men... not what I'd call great shows. But they were popular. "
