I worked years ago for a company called Engine Systems in Latham NY by the airport. Was part of motive power then Wabtec the GE took them over. Engine Systems rebuilt the turbo chargers for locomotives. This is an incredible video, great job. Looks like a turbo charger fire, not something you get to see actually happen. I only saw the aftermath. Basically I believe the seal broke and oil got into the turbo charger and caught fire. Basically looking at a total overhaul for the turbo charger. Pretty cool to see.

That GE did the best ALCO Century impression I've seen in years. Back in the day, Conrail kept their big Centuries at Mingo Junction to handle coal and iron ore trains over the old Cleveland and Pittsburgh. It was a common sight for an exhaust flame up from the unburned fuel that built up in the exhaust system due to that turbo lag those 251s were notorious for.

After 31 years of running GE's I don't think that was a turbo failure - a turbo going to failure on a GE is usually demonstrated by puffs of black smoke under load which sounds like the engine is coughing...power is also reduced drastically in the engine and that can cause dangerous in-train forces while ascending grades. If that turbo actually failed the engine would go into runaway mode and you would have a real display!

That G.E.blew a turbo, when you see fire coming from the stack like, that's not too bad,but when you see fire coming out of the stack on a E.M.D.,that usually means you blew a piston, that's requires the entire engine to be torn down and rebuilt.

I caught an exploding GE going up the hill EB at Pinhook, Ind. in May 2015. A huge smoke cloud appeared to the west, around the curve, & it was about 10 minutes before the train appeared. It was the second of three units, going about 8 mph. I shot the whole train w/my giant Mamiya RB67 studio camera, cranked it, then locked onto the smoking toaster, which by then was blowing out a foot of fire. When it filled the frame, it stopped flaming, but my brain had already told my finger to push the button. Right before the mirror went up, it coughed up more fire. I looked up just in time to see a 10-foot fireball, which instantly disappeared. I knew I had it because of the 1/10-second delay between the mirror & the shutter. That unit then died, but the other two continued to slog to La Porte. When half the train got off the hill, the speed slowly increased to 12 mph.

In the depths of a northern winter, an Alco S-2, left to idle too long, could cover a yard with an acrid, choking smoke when called to work. FM's, GE's, and Alco's also sported flames shooting out of the stack as the soupy mess in the engine manifold, caused by over idling, finally burned off as the engine was called to work. ♡ T.E.N.

@Dontes Inferno.... "Yes looks like its burning engine oil from turbo oil seals dumping oil in exhaust manifold."..... No, not into the "exhaust manifold".... the turbo is at the exhaust outlet, the dark smoke is the result of full fuel at notch 8... and insufficient intake air to burn it all due to a seized or partially seized turbocharger. Whoever that was, speaking in the background (a guy talking to a woman) around the 2:55+ mark was "panic" talking out of shear ignorance of the matter. Sheesh!! The poster said it went into emergency... no, it did not. The engineer (if you noticed) kept it in Run 8 as he applied the brakes to keep any slack out of the train, so that when they began their continued assent on the grade with helper power, they would not break any knuckles.
