The only problem with watching your videos is that about half way through I always go grab my hand drill set and practice and end up forgetting to finish watching. Great motivation!

Burdock. Burdock! That is a new material for me. I am really glad that you shared this with us. Anyone else and I would have bet against it. We have lots of Burdock around these parts and it is on my list for my next outing. Merry Christmas you friction fire genius you!

Excellent video. That was a good bit of bushcraft. I'm still working on this skill here in Brazil. I have gone into the jungle and made a bow drill coal but hadn't collected the tinder to make it into flame that time. You really don't own this skill until you can make it work under adverse field conditions like you did here. Good stuff.

Well, I hope I get halfway as good as you on the floating technique - your primary hand drill video was the thing that got me started on hand drill, because before learning about the existence of the floating technique from you, I considered hand drill rather impractical due to the shortage of straight long enough drill sticks for the classical technique and to make a drill composed of a drill bit from convenient wood attached to a straight stick of whatever is too time and nerve expensive.

You are truely a master of this technique. I am really not able to start a fire with burdock, its to thick for my taste and the spindles are too short and i really suck at floating... But burdock is such an available resource in my area so i have to learn to deal with it. As in my area you wont find any stalks of mullein anymore :D

theres a technique used where the palm of the hand coming back towards you lifts up slightly allowing you to put downward pressure without your hands moving down the stick, i havent personally tried it, but theres a video called "Best Hand Drill Demo Ever" that illustrates the technique and looks to be the same one shown here

@andyroid99 Hi Andy... a bit of sticky douglas fir resin can do wonders.. but can also cause blisters really quickly. A good scrub in clean water helps too, I often use bracken to scrub them with. Also things like elder leaves, and bluebell leaves can give some adhesion... but they are toxic so be careful. You'll find the weather conditions change how your grip is affected... also how often you do it helps.. the more often the better your grip gets.

Sorry for delay... Yes I think the axes are... look for (wont let me type the name of the axe for some reaosn), very sharp and good quality. The coat, however, is one I got from a budget outdoors store 13 years ago... and it's still going strong yet cost only £40! Never seen another like it although it's called a Norwegian hunters coat...hope that helps

Hi LearnBushcraft! I enjoyed this video immensely! I live in Sydney and when i first got into the hand drill method around 3 years ago, i went to a local hardware store with my dad and bought a processed spindle and some construction timber. I then did everything that i could to try and get ember but the outcome is obvious. I did not get it =( I dont think you can get any good materials here in sydney... I can do the floating method too! And would probably get ember with right materials..

@andyroid99 Hi Andy, sorry for the delay in replying to your other messages, been very busy, it's that time of year when the courses kick off. I don't have time to make a vid yet, but will say that willow as a hearth for the handrill is fickle... in one spot it'll work brilliantly, then even the same notch will just stop working, also if you carve a new one right next to it there's no certainty it'll work. Make sure the board is no thicker than your finger, dont want the meber falling too far

How do you keep your hands from sliding down the drill? Even when I try the floating method my hands want to slide down the spindle just like the spindle is made of glass and my hands are greased. Spit dries and my hands get slippery. I have no clue as how to proceed and I'd really like to be able to do this.
@jeffwells6419 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure but I think he's actually got the tip of the spindle partway down his palm (hands nearly halfway off the end of the spindle, in other words). I've done something similar practicing my floating technique on pencils, which are painted and a bit slipperier than bare wood.
@richarddvll6 жыл бұрын
have you tried a small length of cord with a loop in each end cut a notch in the top of your spindle and then put the loops over your thumbs and the center of the cord in the notch in your spindle and you can drill all day long without going down the spindle
@enoughwiththebsalready551811 жыл бұрын
i like this vid, im very bothered by the fact the almost all fire drill videos on youtube are ones where the guy is pulling an already notched board and charred stick drill out of their bag, give me a break, you dont try and teach a kid how to pitch a curveball if the kid doesnt even know how to throw yet, even though its not real difficult to make, thanks for showing the process from the begining

Ha ha... no.. worse I'm kissing it! Testing for dryness with lips.. they're sensitive and can detect the heat being reflected slightly if the wood is dry. Obviously not with poisonous species!

but then you dont have the skills and experience. plus once you know how to make primitive fire, making fire with conventional tools is so much easier
