That shot at 9:01 of a grandfather and grandson was the most poignant scene I've seen in a long time. Teach him well, Grandpa. And Godspeed Chief. I retired from the Sheriff's Office due to cancer but I was privileged to serve on the Honor Guard. I played TAPS for a number of fallen Officers and Deputies over the years. It never got easier, and I pray that it never will. Thank you Boss, for allowing me render honors - it was a privilege to be there.

I'm not a firefighter but my dad was and when I was in 7th grade and one of my buddies who got cancer from firefighting sadly died, that was one of the times I cried the most in my life still I've graduated high school now and joined the air force. But that day still sits with me hard that was the day I learned what a brotherhood firefighters form, and when one falls the heart break they all feel, I still kind of want to be a firefighter but aviation has been my no 1 interest, however if I cant be a pilot firefighting is the only other occupation I can see my self enjoying.

I lost a good friend, who was a firefighter to the same type of cancer. Never knew that his was considered LODD but it really should have been. This was close to 15 years ago now. He had the cancer, had it go into remission, became a sheriff's deputy as he still had public service at heart but medically he could not go back to firefighting. A couple of years later he quickly went downhill and passed. A dear friend who I miss to this day and one that made me decide to get into this great profession and brotherhood. (Just realized this is coming from my daughters account)

Thanks for all your effort this year guys, it doesn't go un-noticed. Sorry to hear about Chief Jackson there are no words that can be said too go with a firefighter's death for a firefighter to die in a flashover or collapse is terrible but for a veteran a man that deserves after all his years in hell to live easy is just wrong, more needs to be done by the international firefighting community and governments to help with firefighter cancer . In the new year for ' a day in the life' can we see the actual role of safety 18 and his/her role on the fire ground for the IC.

Not sure how it is in every other state, but that’s how it is here in Texas. Also, get your IFSAC if you can, especially if you want to go out of state. Best of luck to you!

Going to school that day wasn’t easy. Sorry for your loss. I really want to know how you can get cancer from the job. Is it due to smoke inhalation?
@TheActionJacksonGroup4 жыл бұрын
The cancer he had was Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma-a rare head and neck cancer. It was attributed to breathing in all the smoke and burning carcinogens in furniture and building materials. He worked in the training division and academies for many years, and despite always (ALWAYS) wearing his mask and such, so much is absorbed in your skin from your gear. So wearing dirty gear may look cool, it is very dangerous and it continues to off-gas into your skin for a long time. I suggest you follow the Cancer Protocols that SMFR instituted to help limit that type of exposure. Thank you for your question. Be safe out there - Troy's Widow- Lori Jackson

What do you recommend for a guy who has an amputation and is in a wheelchair. For getting out of an apartment on the second floor.
@johnnykATL4 жыл бұрын
My first suggestion would be to contact your local fire department where you live, they'll have a non emergency main phone line typically answered during business hours. You can notify the department of your situation, a large number of departments these days have computers in their engines and trucks that provides premises info to the responding units. Your info can most likely be added to the info for your apartment complex so if a fire does happen, dispatch and the responding crews will be aware of your situation. Depending on the jurisdiction, your local law enforcement agency may also have the info so if an officer or deputy is there first they too know that you are a priority to assist. Insofar as actually escaping your unit, assuming your normal front door egress is blocked due to fire, one possibility to look into is commercially available rope-type escape ladders. I don't know if that would be an option for you or not as I don't know you but from my experience a good number of folks that require a wheelchair have very strong arms and upper bodies. I also vaguely remember hearing about another product that works in conjunction with a rescue harness if you'd be able to put it on. It is basically similar to a rapeling line that anchors to something in the structure and has a friction clutch pulley that slows descent. Once again, I don't know you or your exact level of limitation so i apologize if the things I mentioned aren't applicable for you. But my number 1 suggestion is getting in touch with your fire dept. and they also may have someone that can come by your apartment to evaluate your situation and hopefully offer more ideas. Hope that helps, very best of wishes. -Johnny
