Why aren’t fire departments state owned? It seems like it would be mighty effective for the state to run the fire departments like they do in Australia.
@johnnz43753 жыл бұрын
That doesn’t work as the state is run by accountants with no understanding of fire fighting, you have to beg for every piece of equipment and it will take years to get even the essentials.
@Adelaide_Transit3 жыл бұрын
@@johnnz4375 it does work if the state government is competent, the high ranking fire fighters and commanders make the decisions about fire fighting and what equipment they need and the state provides the funding for it. It has worked like this since the 1950s, Australia has some of the largest and most well funded volunteer crews in the world. I could see the system working in the US.
@bobbyc27682 жыл бұрын
@@Adelaide_Transit Australia is not the US, assuming state leaders would be competent is assuming a lot. Also assuming politicians would allow fire officials to make decisions about purchases and not want to micromanage is also assuming a lot.

out of all the things america looks to australia for it has to be our useless gun laws , why not look at the nsw rural fire service instead , in 97 we went through a hand me down program where the more active brigades got new equipment on a regular basis and instead of selling to the highest tender the used ( still very viable ) trucks were filtered through the service and with in about 6 years we were able to field the entire state with trucks under 10 years old where we had brigades only a few years earlier that still ran trucks from the 60s and 70s, we are talking several hundred stations now the average age of a bushfire tanker is about 5 years old and we have been able to expand in category of vehicle too and in some cases increase the amount of vehicles based at a lot of stations with a healthy reserve for major emergencies like the beginning of this year , please by all means come and talk to us we will be happy to help , im sure we have a spare bulk water carrier laying around that if you ask nicely we might even donate ,,,, we can be really good like that sometimes , as for the pricks that broke in to that station they will learn too late theres no fire fighters in hell !

Sadly many small departments are like this, Mine is one of them, The newest truck we have is a 1983 GMC Topkick which is our Tanker, Our Pumper is a 1977 Mack similar to the one in this video, and our brush truck is a 1977 M1008 Military truck, We have an annual operating budget of $6,000. I know everybody says "apply for grants" but many don't realize the grant process is extremely tedious and you have to have an extremely well written grant to even be considered, So trying to compete with large cities, and large volunteer departments who can afford to pay grant writers to apply for them, we lose 9 times out of 10 when we apply. It's a real shame it's so hard to get funding to replace the things we need, and that they are so damned expensive, Just to outfit my 15 firefighters with new bunker gear, I was quoted $49,950, I applied for a grant, but who knows what will happen.

My departments newest pumper is 1993 and we just purchased it in 2020 our oldest is a 1977 small departments are struggling to find good trucks they can afford. private individuals are buying the cheaper 5,000-10,000 dollar trucks that small departments and communities desperately need to upgrade their aging and unreliable fleet.

As unfortunate as this is...this department needs to be shut down and given up to an agency that has up-to-date tools and equipment...I mean, come on now, they are operating out of a barn, quite literally...a barn.... and it seems as if the biggest concern is the toy firetruck that was stolen.
@cuckerdoddle1833 жыл бұрын
There are 1,000’s of these departments around the country, it goes to the voters if there’re not will to pay to have an up to date department then this is the outcome, when there are few taxpayers in the town it’s not fair to make the few up there taxes by millions!!! Rural America doesn’t have other departments to hand it over to, and if there was its still up to the taxpayers it would be the same outcome!!
@ChandlerRFink3 жыл бұрын
Cuckerdoddle 1 while I semi agree with you....I have a very hard time believing this department is up to any NFPA or OSHA standards...I have no problem with these small backwoods departments...I do have a problem with being up to standards.
@cuckerdoddle1833 жыл бұрын
Chandler R. Fink I can’t speak on that department, but we have hundreds of them small departments around my parts of the woods. My father in law is a volunteer in one, and they are required to do all the federal mandatory training any other department needs to do. Although it’s hard for them a lot of the time to raise the funds to buy equipment for there needs, they do a good job. There’s a lot of Blueberry fields around here that gets burned every year and these local departments have much more knowledge on how it’s done, they do a lot for the community’s much more then a big department could do, if something is needed they will do a raffle, or a community dinner to raise the funds and that itself keeps our community together and they can learn more from the community’s on its needs!! Also these small town departments do so much charity work that’s not even noticed, they truly are a huge part of what makes the community work, and keeps us together
@DIphone1293 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, while I’m not shaming the Volunteers (and I don’t think you are either), it is shameful that a Fire Department is in this, frankly, piss-poor state of affairs. I also don’t see how it’s feasible for this particular dept. to be up to code and standard with NFPA or OSHAs standards, as you mentioned, given the state of their “station” and apparatus. I don’t see how any training could be conducted and I’m willing to bet they rely heavily on mutual aide. That in and of itself is an issue their town govt, should look into considering the liability of all things considered. Not putting it on the volunteers at all, I give them strong praise for making due to serve their community with what they have.

The barn departments are the ones you want to show up honestly, especially if they have a group of dedicated guys, they'll get it done better than the paid department 9 times out of 10
