I certainly have nostalgia bias, on account of Fates being my first FE game, but I do have quite a soft spot for it in my heart.

It has some great aspects, there's nothing wrong with liking it. I just personally think it had a huge amount of potential that it did not live up to

I personally love the story of fates, especially the character depth. Well, at least most of them

I do too, actually. I think the story's a lot better than people give it credit for, the problem was that a lot of the story is very dense and easy to get a bad impression on, especially when considering: 1) Each route is a game in itself, originally had to buy them indidvidually 2) Only Conquest and Birthright have physical copies 3) Revelation is DLC 4) Lore is scattered through small asides and supports (this would be one of those games where having a Codex a la Mass Effect would've been a godsend) 5) Supports vary depending on which game you get and which characters you support 6) Players can only unlock supports if they use characters together in battle (ergo viability in battle can play a BIG part in that; not even something that takes a lot of effort to fix either, you can make Seeds of Trust buyable in any level of Rod/Staff shops for dirt cheap to easily grind supports) 7) There's no ready indication which have lore or which are mostly humor or character skits 8) The stories layers become wayyy more aparent reading through all the routes and seeing how things interconnect - that is discouraged with the whole release plan I think the problem that befell FE Fates is a really unique one that I actually call "Final Fantasy XV Syndrome" -- in that the story it clearly tries to tell *is* good on bulletpoints, but it's so counterintuitive if you don't deliberately spoil yourself to have the best time possible that I genuinely don't fault anyone for having a bad first impression with the story. It breaks so many established rules of "how to tell a story," which is a shame, because I feel a lot of what's there (especially Garon being so cartoonishly evil being the _point_ as he's literally a meat-puppet of *[Spoilers]'s* control; he becomes a lot more interesting when you remember that he's not really a character and has been dead for a long time now) is genuinely great. I adored the story when I played it in 2016 when I was 18, though I chalk that up due to me being somebody who enjoys chronically overthinking story depths in general, haha. So you can imagine me being shocked to learn that most people hated it. But in time, I've begun to understand why, I just think it's a shame because a lot of what's there _is_ a lot better than people think.

Ahh, dude you started Fates?! Sorry I haven't been around; job has been jobbin'. Felicia had a few phrases that drove memes, but I think the most famous was "Bet'cha didn't see that coming". Oh my gosh, I hate Felicia. The problems with FE writing stems from one problem with FE writing; past FE scripts tried to emulate French and old English opera tales, but modern FE scripts tells everything with a Japanese twist and tries to force a Japanese view onto Western themes and concepts. There was some of it in Awakening but Fate is when it went full revisionist... let's take Felicia and her sister: I.S. had real character with those two, but they either realized the implication and just dropped it, or they just used their predicament as an excuse. Felicia and her sister are in a bad situation within the Japanese understanding, but they are in a horrid scenario by Western understanding-- There was a practice of pre Shinjoku era in Japan, where as if the lord of an area could not pay their yearly (or monthly) quarter, then (if they had daughters or sometimes sons) they would send their children to the capital to become vassals of the Empire. The work could be regulated to maids to low level warriors with the dream of becoming samurai. That's how they were written but I.S. pulled the rails on how bleak the situation was (or it put Garon in the role of "not being cartoonishly evil) and made her [Felicia-- the one that had to be sent to the empire to avoid punishment from befalling her family 'cause the land isn't providing] a goof, and her sister development was contained to "straight-man". But by the Western eyes it was a horrid circumstance. The practice of placing your children into ransom was a legit a thing in the West. So to was the practice of theft of children and even the worst. Corrin was stolen into ransom via captivity, Azura is being by definition ransom, but Felicia and her sister were heavily implied (or straight out told in a certain chapter) that they were SOLD to Garon for the safety. I think the word Treehouse used is "given" but you see in chapter 6 [prelude map included] that Nohr still owns and pillage their village [you can't deal with rebels in an area you don't own]. And Garon has no qualms of destroying the people, and more telling is how there is no push back from Xander or Camilla; what I am getting at is that the games don't show nor imply any form of ransom between their tribe and Garon. Felicia and her sister were most likely Garon's concubines until he stole Corrin. We know they have a large gap between Corrin and themselves 'cause they raised him. So by making her goofy and her sister being regulated as "straight-man", has her coming off as either delusional or "touched in the head". I.S. laziness to make a Western theme and concept "Japanese" [Modern Japanese] dis-serviced two characters and Treehouse silly views ruined them.
