to all those who asked... The subtitle says "Mars" because in romaji, Marth's name is spelled "Marusu" (Maw-roo-soo) and when translating, the "su" can be taken as either an "s" or a "th" (there is no character in the hiragana or katakana writing system that makes an actual "th" sound, so most of the time for foreign words or names, Japanese requires improvising pronounciation a bit). In this case, it was translated as "Mars" before Melee came out where it was shown as "Marth"

It's Original Animated Video, usually spelled OVA (Original Video Animation.) It's an anime or cartoon that was released on VHS or DVD BEFORE it gets shown on TV, if it ever does at all.

Actually Mars is the name of a roman god. (God of war) (If you are interested: Cain and Abel are famous borthers from the bible and Caesar was a famous imperator in rome) His original name was Marusu btw. fan translation is into english is Mars and the official translation is Marth. Now call me nerd

Because his name was originally translated as Mars. Only with Smash Bros. was his name translated as 'Marth', and even then, the programming code still had references to him as 'Mars' :P

Marth's name was originally translated as "Mars" but by SSBM they decided to translate it as "Marth." "Mars" actually makes more sense (god of war), but "Marth" is more unique. ;) In Japanese, it was "Marusu" which could go either way because they don't have the "th" sound.

Marth and Roy were included in Smash bros because Marth is the first main character in a fire emblem game while Roy was (at the time of Smash bros. release) the most recent. In the FE games Marth and Roy never met since their games are set in completely different universes. The game "Fire Emblem" as it was released in the US and Europe is actually the 7th game in the series and is a prequel to Roy's game (FE 6). As for why they call him Mars - its just a poor translation.

It highly depends on whether you're translating on literal hiragana writing or on pronunciation. The -th in hiragana sounds like an -s, so Marth can be interpreted as Mars. Nintendo decided to just do it literally though.

Dude, that's based on the first Fire Emblem game, Ike is in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. The hero of the first Fire Emblem is Marth, not Ike.

While it COULD be interpreted as "Mars" in English, it wasn't necessarily meant to. Designers use various source materials when they research for character names. There are so many possibilities, it's impossible to know for sure where the name originated. It's easy to guess "Mars" (the Roman god of war) since FE is about war, but that may not be what the creators had in mind. The fact that the original game (made by the original designers) features the spelling "Marth" would suggest otherwise.

Back in the early 90's it was a trend to make OVA adaptations of a famous game franchise (and the only way for america to know about it). This along with the Ys OVA were just deemed as another Lodoss war rip-off. I think an FE TV series would be fine, I mean even Druaga has a (loosely based) tv series.
