If I had to guess, the scene of Byleth walking with the three lords and his father is the opening scene with Byleth's mercenary team escorting the lords to the school. This allows the player to get to know all three lords before the house decision, and followed shortly by Byleth's Sothis power awakening. Then they get safely to the school where Byleth is requested to become a teacher for his fighting prowess the lords witnessed

I hope there's a little more to the teacher decision than just "we found this guy and he's pretty good at what he does and is smart. Let's put him in charge of teaching the most future most important politicians/knights/whatever of this one country." Like I'm hoping they do a little more legwork than that. Like give Byleth a backstory where he has some serious credentials. Maybe he was a former student before he was a mercenary. I dunno. I'm just spitballing. But either way, I feel like if they don't handle that plot point extremely thoroughly then it's going to feel forced.

I am honestly not too worried about the outfits. It seems the students start as the noble class (ala villager). So you could look at it as they all start as the same class and at least have some variation in how they look as that class.

And speaking of it - The Villagers of Shadows of Valentia we're also different looking, a bit similar yes, but in general they look unique even if you reclassed one of the others to a villager. So the Nobles are most likely the same with more possibility. They will have different look with class change, I'm sure.

Bonus points for staying positive and not already trying to find negatives with things that the community can only speculate on. have you guys not played a FE game before? I forget the number but if you are like 5 speed faster then who you are fighting you attack twice. Would make sense bare handed would be the fastest.

@@SirCanuckelhead Have you ever attacked an enemy in an FE game before? It was always 4 speed, btw, until Awakening where it became 5 speed (and Gaiden/Echoes where it was 1 because reasons). It always goes attack-counterattack-attack. The only way to attack consecutively without using some sort of game-specific special attack or mechanic is to use a Brave weapon, or if you are counterattacking an enemy you double, or if they can't attack back. So it does seem more reasonable that gauntlets will be lower-Mt but with an inbuilt Brave-like mechanic.

3:44 I think that will be about the beginning of the game because your mercenary group could be escorting them as the reason why Byleth ends up in the monastery. You get to know Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude a little before picking a house to teach like how Fates did their early chapters before choosing a side. That's just my theory though.

Yeah, probably true. Maybe I'm just hopeful that the story will be good and I think it's just super contrived that Byleth would happen to magically know them all before teaching at the monastery.. Seems very unlikely.

@@lucky_crit Unless they were ordered to meet up with them and escort them to the location for some reason Byleth being asked to teach before seemingly proving himself makes me think this mercenary company he is s part of is very prestigious already, similar to Ike's group in Radiant Dawn. So I don't think it would be too offputting if that's the case though I'd like to know why all 3 nobles travelled the same path to the monastery

Tasbard My theory for why they were taking the same road to the monastery is that maybe the 3 houses were having peace talks, and they needed to be in attendance due to their future roles. That makes having them all be escorted by one mercenary group easier than splitting them up again.

This would not only explain the need for all 3 to take the same path, but also provide us with either missions where we have to defend the one path from an invasion force or missions where we have to invade them

About the uniforms - if you pause at that part with the combo attack you can see everyone has new outfits (that don't really look generic too).

Maybe they all start out as generic nobles, but through your teaching you can flesh out their classes, and they'll change outfits to better match their class. Kinda like how we saw a few versions of Edalgard in the trailer.

Both 2D and 3D animation are costly. It depends on the quality. 2D animation price creep, however, will max out after so far. 3D animation can be pump out at a much faster rate for cheap, but in order to get a high quality 3D animation, it will cost a lot more than that of a high quality 2D. The reason that you see so many "bad anime cg" is because anime tv show often do not have the fund to be hiring all the required role needed for a 3D production. 3D production pipeline include: layout, modelers, UV, riggers, texture artists, animators, lighters, and that's just the production without including the pre and post production. 2D on the other require less necessity roles, a lot of 2D animation rely heavily on just the key frame animator to carry the entire project. In between animator is sheer man power and perseverance, which is why people often joke about how you can lose your job at any moment as an in betweener since you are easily replaceable. Storyboard, color key, reference gathering, composer, music, VFX etc. are required for both 2D and 3D. In term of tools, 2D animation literally only require any raster/vector drawing software, not only that these software are cheaper, any of them will work. 2D animation is a very skill reliance job, it's either you can draw or you cannot draw. 3D get ridiculously expensive when it come to software usage(no, they cannot pirate the software and use it on production to make profit, they will get sue). We have got Maya, Arnold, Subsurface, mud box, and at least one drawing software... those alone are the ones that I use as a student, I remember the people from Pixar came to our school and start listng out the 13+ software that he remember on top of his head to make the movie Coco. Most anime/anime-est game CGI often look cheap because company doesn't want to invest their entire resource on a scene. It's much cheaper to hire one really good key frame artist for a quick scene than to assemble a group.

Feel like posting this anyway despite Mack giving a long thorough comment with more experience than me but I'd imagine CG/3D would generally be cheaper in the long run and potentially easier (since you use environments, models, and rigs(what models are put on) that only need to be done once unless you mess up, instead of drawing all/most of it again) and depending on experience (of the 2d artist) it could be faster as well in the short term. (should be faster in the long term based on previous things mentioned) The downside for CG/3D stuff might be the initial cost though as I've heard you will likely need multiple programs, especially if the actual animation software either doesnt have the ability to make models or rigs. This are just some ideas and things I've heard because of a 3D animated show I watch a lot of.

Anime-style 2D is actually fairly cheap to produce. I mean, we're not talking 90's Disney here, judging by the scenes that were shown in the trailer. Given how nice Fire Emblem's CG looks, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they end up being more expensive than these 2D scenes.

Also worth noting: Byleth and Sothis are names of *demons* from the Ars Goetia. (Part of the 17th-century Grimoire of Unholy Arts) And I suspect that Sothis is more likely "residing" inside Byleths mind, as a form of possession or sealing if you will. - That would coincide with Byleth's inexplicable powers which seem rather dark from the single look we get of them. Could be a figment of the demon - Sothis - sealed within him. That's all just speculation of course. Also, Byleth (in the Ars Goetia) is a very weird demon. His only sole interest seems to be love... 2:21 Each time I see it I find "Rome" extremely weird. Especially given that this place, obviously "inspired" in name by the "Eternal City" isn't in the thousand-year-old Empire, which is likely the oldest of all nations of this world. 5:54 Bullshit. Firstly: Hogwarts is a *national* academy, not an international one. Secondly: Students are sorted by heritage, not by individual talents here, doesn't fit too. (And makes no sense from an educational point either.) I'm pretty sure a steel book case means that the game will be inside of it, just like previous collectors edition. Though I have to say, this collectors edition is pretty lame, at least the EU version gets some pins while we get some silly calendar. They art does look cool, and so does the CD, bit as is we're paying an extra $30 for a box poster.

Could be wrong but I think they're only showing very early parts of the game where you choose your first batch of characters to use throughout. Similar to your band of villagers in Valentia, you start off with a small group of customizable nobles in the beginning of the game and branch out with more characters not associated with the academy as the game progresses. That's my guess anyways.

Weston Meyer Ick, I hope not. This one isn't even out and I'm already sick of its drab aesthetics. Obviously that's entirely subjective, but I'd much rather this be a one and done title. Something tells me it's not going to have the staying power that the world of Tellius or Archanea had.

Weston Meyer Didn't mean sales, staying power as in general reception towards things like story, characters, and chapters. No Path of Radiance didn't sell well (for a multitude of reasons) but many of the people who did play it thought very highly of it and wanted more of that world, as it was a lot more fleshed out than most other FE universes. Take Fates as the inverse of that, where like you said yourself, the trailers looked great, so people bought it and many of them weren't impressed (myself included). Again, subjective, but I never want to see the world in Fates ever again, whereas I was excited to play Radiant Dawn after playing through Path of Radiance, despite its low sales and stiff character animations. Now, I hope Three Houses is a great game, and I am finding positive things to pick out of it. But as of now, I would be lying if I said this game piqued my interest. It really hasn't. Partly from the animations too, despite the higher resolution, they actually look like a step down from Shadows of Valentia.

And yeah, my hopes for this game are pretty much the same, an in-depth strategy rpg with minimal to no dating sim elements. First I like to say I am very excited and also extremely worried. I feel this just a setup and are just introducing the premise. A lot of things show in this trailer seems like side stuff. I’m sure we’ll get a another trailer later with more main plot details. I just feel people are rushing to conclusions and just assume this all the game has to offer. We still have 5 MOUTHS left to go and there going to be releasing more information to keep the interest and hype going. I’m going to keep an open mind and see how things play out. To its credit it’s at least trying to be different for an Fe game(even for High school anime where we are teacher and not an OP student). That much I will applaud to for not trying to make Awakening 3.0 and actually have it be different is healthy for any franchise(look at Zelda BOTW). But It’s all going to come down to how it all comes together. In terms of graphics I just think give it some time and people will start to get use to it. Personally I think they look gorgeous and has a nice realistic style to it(but I do find the lack of different outfits for the characters to be the main why I see lots of “Characters don’t look distinct from each other” which I think is valid and I agree on). Overall: Hyped and will definitely get the game at launch. But honestly how well will it be received is a different beast that can go in any direction. Worst case scenario: Elitist like myself will at least have GBA rom hacks to look forward to. While casuals will enjoy this new game.(Also hyped for FF 7 and Bloodstained)

I feel fans should calm themselves. I've seen plenty out there crying and worrying that this is all the game is going to be when it clearly isn't. This was only meant to introduce another aspect of the story and mechanics, nothing more. Honestly, and as much as purists will hate me for this, FE has seriously stagnated for me. It's grown rather tiresome with its stories and gameplay, and I'm glad they're taking some measures to freshen that up. Change isn't a bad thing and can be beneficial in the long run. And don't take this as an attack against the whole FE fanbase, I'm sure many are level headed and are still very excited, I'm mostly going after those who are using this trailer to toss aside the game without waiting further.

It's the FE fanbase. The FE fanbase is never calm. Almost everyone hates almost everyone else in the FE fanbase and everything FE does is cause for flamewars and outrage. As a long-time fan of the series (started with Sacred Stones), I'm looking forward to this game. This will be the 13th Fire Emblem game, and that's if we DON'T count remakes like SoV, and it'll be the first one to make any major alterations to the usual core mechanics and story structure. If you absolutely need an FE game that plays like every FE game so far, you have 12 other options, but I guess that isn't good enough for these purists. There's a lot of things that were changed, but for me at least, it looks like changes that still keep in mind what FE is supposed to be. Plus, like you said here, this is clearly not all the game has to offer. This is clearly going to be a pretty big Fire Emblem title, *possibly* the biggest one so far, and we're still months away from release, so there's no reason to assume that they announced everything there is to know about the game already. I just hope that they don't try to shoehorn in marriage and child units like they did with Fates. Awakening got a lot of hate for its marriage and child units too, but at least there was a legitimate explanation for it there. Fates just kind of threw it in there and didn't care if it made no sense at all. If they absolutely MUST go that route, I hope they at least do something akin to what Holy War did instead of time travel or alternate dimensions.

AshXXMayftw Concerning the outfits, The trailer shows Edelgard changing her outfit when you upgrade her to brigand. So I think the uniform is the basic form and they change once you change classes

I enjoy the idea of the students wearing uniforms with slight variations in their outfits. It may make them blend more with each other, but I also think that it highlights their traits by showing what is different about them in a place where everything needs to look uniform. It also reminds me of my high school days, students all liked to customize their uniforms and show off

Given that Byleth's initial pose when he gets the Sothis vision is the same one as when he gets axe'd on the back, I'm assuming they're the same scene, and Sothis is the one that enables the Turnwheel mechanic, which turns out to be the "mysterious power" that gets Byleth his teaching job.

Wow thanks for pointing out the thing about the Blue Lions, I didn't even realize that the backgrounds indicated the same house, so we already know Black Eagles and this help us confirm the Blue Lions which seem to be Ashe, White Haired Axe dude, Sylvian, Dimitri, Annette, Mercedes, other Orange haired girl, and the Blonde girl. The brown haired person makes it 9, so it seems not every house will have even numbers.

I think that the Authority skill is directly related to the Gambits and Formations. Maybe the higher your Authority skill, the more battalions you have access to and the more gambits you can use. It seems like they're working very similarly to weapons where you can equip a battalion and the gambits seem like the weapon arts.

Great commentary man. Really loved the analysis. You picked up a lot of things I didn't notice. I did see that they had changed Garg Mac for instance, but I wasn't aware they altered a bunch of other names too. I also didn't notice that some of the characters shown here had been in previous trailers in battle animations. I think the funniest comment I've seen regarding the characters is somebody saying that the teacher in that one animated cutscene looks like Krabapple from the Simpsons. I can't unsee it now. Another thing I wonder is whether the three paths will actually change the storyline or merely the roster you are given.

Man, why does everyone act like Fates was hot garbage? The only really bad thing about it was the splitting the content thing, which made the overall story suffer a bit as a result. Everything else was still pretty damn fun. I kinda hated Corrin personality-wise but It didn't ruin the game for me.

Like, your options for story are: predictable, but overall solid story about good triumphing over evil; fucking batshit insane story that tries its damnedest to make you hate your home country and two of your siblings, one from each of your homes; and Revelations, which I've not played, but I"ve heard is really boring? I dunno, regardless, not great. I'll give you though, gameplay wise, solid entry. Also, solid enough characters (though some I wasn't a huge fan of goshdangit)

@@ashrobin55 Relevations isn't boring at all, I've never heard that criticism. That's a first. I think really the major issue with fates' stories are in the original two versions. Hoshido's mode is very by-the-books and plain, and Nohr's, mode, while more fun mechanically (also has better characters imo), is severely lacking in the "good story" department late game. They really couldn't think of a good way to finish it without you still kind of being the bad guy? Really? Revelation's story is by far the most coherent, but it's main drawback is that you'd need to play at least one of the previous versions before. None of the modes stand alone, but together they feel like they're not worth the money you spent. Still, I enjoyed the game quite a bit, clocked in a nice 200 or so hours over my 2 years of owning it. Glad to see the studio acknowledging its issues and trying to improve upon them.

21:23 Kind of surprised you didn't mention the banner raised here depicts a golden griffin, combining the animal motifs of the Black Eagles and Blue Lions and the House color of the Golden Deer. This might indicate some kind of unification of the houses later on, or possibly that emblem is a used for the officer's academy as a whole, since it's a fusion of elements from all three houses' symbols. EDIT: Checking again, it seems this is a banner of the church, since one of their knights is also seen carrying one in another scene. It fits as a symbol of the neutral middle ground between the territories.

One thing you missed is that Curve Shot has a number 3 next to it. Combat Arts from Echoes are back, but unlike Echoes that require HP to use it, the Arts now indicate the case that it will expend more of your weapon usage. This would explain why the weapon durability is now at Radiant Dawn levels, with Iron Weapons being all the way at 50 uses. This is a most welcomed change and adds to some strategic value, in that you can use a powerful skill, but have to weigh your options in the case where you may lose your weapon all the more quicker. Not sure how they'll handle this with legendary weapons, and I personally hope that we don't have breakable legendary weapons.

Some things I want to point out is that the Kid the the gauntlets attacking a mage actually doubled BEFORE the mage got to counter and then the battle ended, I could see that being either a normal/easy mode thing or the gauntlets have a natural brave effect. This also means that if you would deal enough damage you could out right kill an enemy before they get the chance to counter attack. Not sure how I feel about that change if it’s not some how restricted. Also in Warriors, some of cut scenes appeared to be prerendered, but actually just moved the character models for the scene, that’s why your characters can have different weapons equipped during the cut scenes, so perhaps Byleth is customizable if the cut scenes in 3H works like they do in warriors.

The name of the school is Garreg Mach which is welsh. It either means small/tiny stone: it could also mean surety stone. “Mach” has a double meaning. The thing that’s also pretty cool is that the word Mach might also refer to “machlud haul” which means sunset. That’s really cool because of the Japanese name. But all in all I don’t think this has much relevance but it’s a fun little detail.

The pose that Byleth was in when he was struck by the axe looks like the same pose he was making when he first meets Sothis at the beginning of the trailer. This leads me to believe that this is the moment where he meets Sothis. Sothis then grants Byleth the power of foresight/rewinding time thus avoiding death. This would also mean that Byleth gets to meet Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude before going to the monastery. Maybe the mercenary group was hired to escort these three very important nobles?

Few things: When going over combat arts, there’s a 3 next to Curved Shot. I at first assumed that’d be the amount of hp it consumed, like in Echoes, but no hp is used when it procs, so I’m assuming this means combat arts are limited by uses or limited based on some other mechanic. Also the Black Beast and Sylvain both having the Gautier name involved with them does indeed link back to a certain houses area. If you look close enough at Faerghus on the world map, you can see Gautier is actually the northernmost city of Faerghus. There’s plenty of other stuff I could point out, but other commenters already have, so I’m just pointing out what I haven’t seen mentioned.

I think it would be cool that instead of a game over screen when a lord or Byleth dies, Byleth reverses time similarly how he did it there to the beginning of the chapter, maybe this is why he is silent, he doesn’t want to reveal the future to his friends/students and/or he is scared from watching them die over and over haha. I think this a good idea to make the game over functionality a bit more interesting.

As someone whose first FE game was the series' American GBA premier, I have to say these new mechanics seem very interesting. The apparent time management system ( i.e. the Persona series ) and the ability to train your students into whatever classes you want ( i.e. Disgaea, the humanoid classes at least ) are concepts I have fun with in their respective games, and think can give some much needed fresh gameplay to the IP.

@@kylefreeburg9353 They don't look very pre-rendered to me. I think they chose the cell-shaded art style specifically because it's pretty easy to make nice in-game cutscenes using it. I think a better way to judge would be looking at the 2d/ animated cutscenes, and I didn't really see a trace of Byleth in those, though I doubt those were in first person.

It appears that Annette is calling the character you identified as possibly being Mercedes Mercie. This could just be a nickname and if so gives a small insight to Annette's personality. Also Leonie and Raphael are in the background when the narrator is talking about the Golden Deer pretty much confirming them for that house. Lastly it is possible that Dorothea is just another spelling of Dorothy pronunciation wise. I always enjoy your videos keep up the good work.

What was it that Edelgard said in the original trailer again? “The crests are to blame” maybe as some form of defense the crest can summon or become these black beasts in order to protect it from getting stolen or whatever. Or maybe the villain of the story is using the crest’s power to either strengthen pr summon these powerful beasts. I think that all characters start with the general student outfit, then get a new one based on the class they promote to. As can be seen, Edelgard has some new clothes after passing the Brigand exam.

So, rewatched the first trailer and noticed something that no one else seems to have mentioned. One type of enemy unit are kingdom soldiers, and there’s only one “kingdom” in this game, that being Faerghus... interestingly enough, even Dimitry, the prince of the kingdom, was fighting against the soldiers. Wonder what that means for the other groups.
