Awesome 👍 Lived in Colorado and the farmers all did controlled burns. They also burned their grass around their house during the winter when it was dormant. They had the best lawns. Keep sharing your life, a lot of people have no idea what a great life it is living in rural America 👌

Thanks for the explanation in the description. Many "city folk" don't understand why these controlled burns are necessary. 👍

I've done several prescribed burns professionally. A few things are immediately apparent: A: You have lots of people, proper equipment, and a well laid out plan with wind/backburns/buffer. B: You regularly burn huge tracts that dwarf anything in size that I've ever done. The prairie grasses and ecosystem that rely on them DO need regular burns as has been researched and proven time and time again on the nearby Konza Prairie!

In 1979 I took my mother over to East Anglia in the UK in late September and many of the farmers were doing exactly what you show here in this video. Awe-some in the original sense of the word. We'd drive for miles through the smoke and haze. Surreal and sublime.

How do you guys keep doing it? Each of your videos eclipses the last one. Quality education and entertainment. Portraying farming as a lifestyle versus a job must make some folks heads explode. Wait a second, my bi-weekly check is a little short. No overtime for over 40? No shift differential? My grandparents (born between 1880 and 1891) all farmed and I recall many of their and my parents tales. My dad joked that he looked forward to church on Sunday mainly because it was the only time he got to sit down and relax for a couple of hours. I do wonder about the relevance of controlled burning given today's technology (yes, I'm talking those evil chemicals). I fully understand that prairie fires are totally Kansas, and have happened nearly annually for many millennia. And I saw Yellowstone both before and a few years after a major fire, and noted the fire had done a lot of good. My question is whether controlled burning of a pasture really kills weeds? You're not burning the root system (which can cover acres in the case of some weeds), so don't they all just pop back up the next year? Are you actually doing more than reducing the spread? Anyway, make good life choices, keep the farm together, and keep these videos coming.

Do y'all till or turn the soil after the burn is done or just let it be?
@laughlinlaura5 жыл бұрын
No. It is pasture, so the new grass grows up quick, and then the cows can be turned out on it.

Damn what a waste:( I know why they do it all over just wish they were able to graze cattle there. Thumbs up by the way.
@PetersonFarmBros5 жыл бұрын
We do graze cattle there! Within a few weeks after the old grass has burned off (the cattle don't eat the old grass well at all anyway), the new grass comes in and the cattle thrive on it. Burning is better for the cattle, the grass, the flowers, and the wildlife. Only thing it's not good for is the weeds! (which is good)
@demigodgilman5 жыл бұрын
@@PetersonFarmBros good show I'm glad to see that there's still cattle guys out there. Here on the west coast we all keep going out because of all the bs laws and taxes, there arnt many of us left compared to ten years ago.
@KhorneyFishRawrFearMeh3 жыл бұрын
Cattle and other pasture livestock can ruin your pastures so its good to renew the grass by burning.
