Empty Shoe Polish can. Pick up a cheap bag of Makeup Removal Pads at the store. Coat the pads in Vaseline on both sides, and fill shoe polish can. Shred one up for easy spark lighting material. In a long term situation, when you run out of the pre treated pads, you can pop a hole in the can and have a char tin. Small container that packs flat and has multiple uses afterwards. Love the multiple options in the kit in your video!

In February, 1973, I observed my 18th birthday. My mother pranked me by placing trick candles on the cake - they relight themselves in an instant after being blown out. They relight throughout the length of the candle. In June 1973, I joined the Spokane (Washington) chapter of Explorer Search & Rescue. Our chapter was led by Paul “Ole” Olfson, a retired U. S. Air Force survival instructor. Ole emphasized survival kits. When I showed him the relighting birthday candles, he was amazed. Of course, I already had a few in my own survival kit. I believe I was the first to put relighting birthday candles in a survival kit. I note that your fire- starting kit could accommodate a few of the tiny candles.

Dave's greatest secret is revealed here: functional thinking. He considers the relationship of objects to each other and his abilities. Dave has worked out in great detail, scenarios, contingencies and how HE would use the item considering HIS skills. Someone without his knowledge, experience, and skills may look at Dave's gear in quite a different way.

I make various tools with them scribing tools, scalpel sharp knives, wood scrapers and more. Pieces of saw blade make great fire starting tools when they have a 90 degree edge plus are real small. I bet you could think of a ton. I always enjoy hearing your awesome fire skills videos. Many thanks.

Since I use a magnifying glass because I am old I carry one in my pocket all the time. Mine is from A.G. Russell and folds into a leather sheath to protect the lens. I have tried a lot of different ones and it is the best because it is flat enough you will always have it in your pocket and on your person also it is real glass and very well ground. I have used it to start fires many times and it does a great job. I also have a Mini Bic lighter in the same pocket and a backup full sized one in one of my cargo pockets. When I go in the woods I throw in a Lite my Fire firesteel. I have a main fire kit in my pack but really have never used it much except to get proficient at using it and storing tinder which I have in Tupperware which will keep it dry no matter what.

I am lucky to have 2 of the Canadian Army Mess Traps. They're a bit larger than thr French ones, fairly heavy guage aluminum, and steel wire handles. Along with 1 belt pouch in almost new condition. I found patterns on the internet for Nimblewell Nomad Stoves, so I built one for each set of mess tins. I just use a 6" piece of copper tuning for blowing into the fire and mixing embers. My only critical difference is that anything that'll suck up water is either in a heavy zip-lock bag or pop bottle pre-form to ensure dryness. Great little kit, and thanks for showing. My Nomad stoves have been modified to accept either a Vargo Titaninum Triad (alcohol) stove, a Trangia (alcohol) stove or tuna can Buddy burner (wax/cardboard) Subbed today. Cheers.

Nice kit, well explained. One caveat: This aluminum mess kit will very likely develop holes while using it to char organic matter because the low melting point of aluminum doesn't fit well to glowing embers. A similar box/mess-kit made from thin stainless steel would do the trick, though.

Good presentation and good timing as I have been doing lots of thinking on better organizing my fire tools and materials in a kit. I recently purchased a Helikon-Tex Bushcraft Line, Essential Kitbag for my Pathinder canteen kit. Love the quality of the bag and prefer it even to my excellent Maxpedition pouches. The Pathfinder canteen kit is a little tight but with some practice I have been able to remove it without too much fiddling. In the side pockets I can carry my Trangia alchohol stove and my Firebox Nano (purchase from your store). I am also fitting a Opinel #8 Inox olive, Leatherman Juice S2, Light my Fire ferro rod, bic lighter, coffee cream bottle, bandana, ziploc with sugar packs, and a ziplock with enough coffee brewing a full canteen cup of cowboy coffee (18oz or so) twice. In the front pocket I keep a titanium Light my Fire spork and some fatwood. In the back slot I slide in a Bahco Laplander which I may eventually replace with Silky pocket or gomboy. So provides an excellent pack able cowboy coffee kit that can brew with sticks or alchohol fuel for smoothing it in the woods. Would be curious to see how you would fill this excellent bag around your excellent canteen kit.
@snowpuppy775 жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention two important things that also fit in the Helicon-Tex Essential Kitbag with the rest. I can also fit one of those shorter 5.5" tall accordion type aluminum wind screens inside the main compartment with the canteen. I put the part of the canteen that curves in to the front of the bag and put the windscreen in front. This size windscreen is perfect for the Firebox Nano x-box. Stands a half inch higher than the bottom of your pot or pan. And the x-box case keeps the wind from pushing the wind screen into the Nano. I use the "HIGHROCK Lightweight Compact Folding Camp Stove Windscreen" and there are other brands like it. And lastly I attach my Kupilka cup to the outside of the bag using the D-ring on top. With cowboy coffee it is best to poor from your brewing cup (canteen cup) to your drinking cup (Kupilka).

Nice kit. Good information. It’s easy to see that you walk the walk and actually live the principles of what you teach. I’ve been using flint-and-steel since 1969. I have dozens of steels. C-steels, U-steels, custom and hand-made steels. Even some that are shaped like animals. But none spark as good, and are as multi-useful as, the Pathfinder Steel. That is the one in my main fire-kit.

Probably many people will say it, but I noticed that after you put the inner tin inside the other tin there’s a bunch of space around it so you could in theory put some of the stuff in that space that surrounds the inner tin. Great video. I always get at least one good idea from every video. That’s why even if I see a video from someone that seems like they don’t know what they’re doing as much as some other people I still watch their video because you never know. For those outside the eastern United States and don't have access to tulip poplar and its beautiful bark, I would like to inform you that regular jute twine is a great substitute for tulip poplar bark. You just need to untangle a piece of twine and beat it by pulling it through the butt of the knife. When dry, it catches sparks of a ferrocerium rod very, very well! It lights up with a bright flame and burns actively.

While sitting on the river bank fishing for carp, I tried using my readers to create a coal on some punkwood and within a half an hour I had blown to flame a couple of bird's nests. At the end of the day, after eating and before going to sleep, I always burn a small piece of bicycle rubber tube to cover the odor of the food.
