PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF EVERY STAFF:
Fire safety, prevention and Fire fighting are the responsibilities of every individual staff members of Hospital/Industry He or she should:
a. Be familiar with Hospital fire safety and department fire plan
b. Report all fire hazards to your HOD
c. Smoking is strictly prohibited
d. Know the location of firefighting equipment and be acquainted with their operating instruction.
e. Participate in all fire safety training and practice sessions.
PROCEDURE TO BE FOLLOWED IN CASE OF FIRE:
a. Person on discovering the fire should not panic,run or shout
b. Remove personnel form immediate danger of smoke and fire. Patients will be relocated in areas on the same floor but away from the fire. Close the door behind you.
c. Inform telephone operator in the exchange. Give exact location, Room/floor,area etc. and the extent of fire.
d. The telephone operator will immediately inform fire safety officer,AO/GS, Shift Engineer and security inspector.
e. Depending upon the nature and gravity of fire, fire safety officer will authorize announcing of code RED in the PA system followed by the location of fire three times.The announcement will be repeated every 30seconds for a period of two minutes.
f. The telephone operators will also notify the Director Administration, Director Medical Administration, Medical Superintendent, Chief Engineer and Chief Nursing officer.
h. The shift Engineer with the assistance of his engineering staff will shut off all ventilating fans, AC dampers, electric power, medical gas to the affected area and if necessary to any adjoining areas threatened by fire.
i. Do not use elevators. Walk down the stairs.
10. FIRE FIGHTING:
a. Fire fighting party will move to the scene of fire without any delay with fire extinguisher.
b. They will work under instruction of Fire safety officer/ Asst. Fire Safety officer (AO/GS), Shift Engineer/ Senior most Executive present at the scene of fire.
d. Seal off the area of fire. Close windows and all patient room doors, place wet blanket or towels along the door edges to prevent leakage of smoke.
e. Fight the fire with fire extinguishers if the fire is small. If the fire is large with fire hoses(only by trained personnel).
f. In case the fire brigade arrives, they will take complete charge.
11. ACTION BY PERSONNEL NOT AFFECTED BY FIRE:
a. Stop whatever you are doing
b. Report to your patients and staff
c. Shutoff equipments, gas etc which might aggravate the risk
d. Reassure the patients and staff
e. Do not run or shout. Do not leave you department unless permitted by your supervisor.
12. ON COMPLETION OF FIRE FIGHTING:
a. When the fire is completely put off, send all clear message after confirming from the fire Brigade and Fire safety officer/Asst. Fire safety officer(AO/GS) / Senior most executive.
b. Take stock of salvaged items and items lost in fire.
c. The HOD of the department where the fire had broken out should write a fire incident report and send it to Director Administration, Director Medical administration and Chief Engineer.
h. Following records will be maintained.
1. Register of fire accidents
2. Register of fire practices
3. Register of check on fire protection equipment
4. Register of trained personnel on fire safety.
5. Register of nominated personnel for fire fighting party.
i. Holding and accounting of fire fighting equipments
j. Maintenance and serviceability of fire fighting equipments.
k. Getting all electrical installations checked by electrical Engineer for serviceability quarterly and record the same.
l. Procurement of fire fighting equipments based on condemnation.
15. DUTIES OF FIRE FIGHTING PARTY:
a. They will move to the scene of fire without any delay with fire fighting equipment
b. Will work under instructions of Fire safety Officer / Asst.Fire safety officer/ Shift Engineer / Senior most executive present at the scene of fire.
c. Will endeavour to save life and properly involved.
d. Salvage all equipments / stores and handover to the respective departments
e. If any doctors or windows are required to be broken open to fight fire it will be done.
f. In the event of fire all doors and windows which are not required to fight fire will be closed.
g. Fire should be fought against the wind or across the wind.
h. Speed in tackling the fire is of primary importance. This will not only prevent spreading but also lessen the damage or loss.
i. Maximum use of fire extinguishers will be made to put out the fire.
