Fire Roll FAIL!
Anyone that has practiced primitive fire techniques you know that it is part skill and, at times, part luck. Today our luck ran out. Watch Patrick work through the process of the Fire Roll and see us break down what went wrong......also...OUT TAKES at the end!

Patrick, I had some difficulties initially with this method. Now I have no problems. Once you initially rolled the fire roll, you need to forward roll it in the tightening direction until it gets nice and tight before rolling. More downward pressure and grsdually increase the speed of your rolling. Usually takes about 20 or so forward and backward strokes to get that ember. If it isn't smoking or you can smell it, go back to rolling a bit more....it will ignite. Also this is harder to do when it's damp and really humid outside. Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy them. I just prchased a PR4 and a RG5....really like them both very much. They will mske a welcome addition to my other Esee knives.

Thanks for the tips. The relative humidity was stupid high and it was HOT the day we did this. All contributing factors to our underwhelming performance.

Thanks for sharing! When it comes to skill development, the only true failure comes when you don't spend the time to reflect on what went wrong and how to do it differently next time. Just yesterday I was attempting to use a carved out agave stalk as a make-shift container for boiling/purifying water...it failed--but it gave me the opportunity to examine what might have gone wrong and learn from it. That's what training is all about--figuring stuff out so you don't fail when it really matters.

Legitimately thought upon reading the title that someone caught on fire and failed the "drop and roll" method of extinguishing oneself.

Good try guys, can’t wait to see round 2. It went a lot easier at Bushcraft but the boards were flat.

We've made it work too under ideal conditions...we used 2x4 cut off which were nice and flat...we used dry ash out of a recent fire....Today was used scavenged material...Hewn our own boards, and the ash was a little damp....not to mention the tender....so real world! We are going to get back after it and try it again!

check out our video library...we have several videos up there....works in the jungle like it does in a lot of places..you have to find standing dead wood and get to the dry part.

Love that you're keeping it honest! This was not easy when we did it in Bushcraft class either and we had pretty ideal conditions.

I love this fire making method, I fought and fought with this when I first tried it. It is not as easy as it looks that for sure, Lucky Boggy Creek Beast gave me some good pointers to help. Thanks for keeping it real and I look forward to the next part. I hope that it is not to forward, but I was hoping you might check out my video. Fire Roll in the Woods: From Ember to Sustainable Fire. Thank You, new sub as well.

I think the boards are too thick Patrick ☺
@RandallsAdventureESEE
@RandallsAdventureESEE 6 жыл бұрын
we think it is less to do with thickness and maybe more to do with the smoothness of the surface...we've done this pretty easy with a set of 2x4 cut offs without issues....we also noticed that some moisture was forming inside the bag of ash....we've had a TON of rain as of late and the ambient moisture is very high here...we are going to give it another go very soon! so stay tuned!
