Please visit my Fire Roll Playlist through the LINK below for great tutorials and 100+ demonstrations of the technique. 1) Use 1" x 4" pieces of lumber for the top and bottom boards... or reasonable facsimile. 2) Use 100% cotton, cotton balls. 3) Unroll and use 6" of one cotton ball. 4) Place a 1/4 tsp of any type of wood ashes on the end of the cotton and roll it up tightly. 5) Place 1/4 tsp of ashes on the bottom board which allows the boards to grip and drive the roll 6) Tighten the roll by giving 5 forward strokes with your hand then 5 more with the top board. 7) Now you're ready to go for the ember/ignition. Bear down hard while rolling back and forth 10 times, turn the roll 180 degrees, roll 10 more times, if it's not smoking continue rolling until you see smoke. Congratulations!!! Really? I had no problem getting the fire roll to work. It worked first time and every time since. What a fantastic idea. I keep cotton balls as a part of my fire starting kit because of your video.

Thanks David for another tutorial on fire rolling. I started about a year ago and had multiple failures, until you commented that I should increase the downward pressure. That was it! Once I understood this, fire rolling the cotton and ash became easy. I still have not succeeded with the paper towel and ash, but will continue to try.

Thanks, David. If someone can't do fireroll now, they better stick to matches. I've always heard that knowledge learned and not shared is wasted. You don't appear to waste much knowledge. Thank you for that. I just have a quick question, the local fire chief doesn't have you on speed dial, does he ? LOL. God bless you, sir. And you have a blessed day.

Nice Vid, thump up. I was grooming my Patou the other day and asked myself if it would be possible to make a fire roll with his undercoat 🤔😂

What is the purpose of ash? Does it merely provide friction? Could something else like chalk work?

@@DavidWestBgood2ppl Interesting... My dad told me of the same method working on rice straws. He worked as a prison guard in Korea in the 1960s. The inmates would make a thin rope with rice straw, making sure to twist it very tightly. Then, they roll it between boards until it smokes. They'd break it open and it would have a coal. They used it to light cigarettes.

Ah, my issue is that it gets overly tight. I should try turning.
