I am interested in knowing if all fire departments have designated PIO's. I am not sure our area seems to have one as it usually seems to be a captain or our premier who deliver updates. We have had forest fires this year and this week we just had major flooding with even emergency apparatus getting stuck while trying to drive through flooded areas. I can see the importance of having a PIO for sure as I haven't felt as well informed about the things going on.
@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO Жыл бұрын
The PIO role is part of the incident command structure and always filled at major incidents, sometimes by a fire / police chief or sheriff. Most medium to large size fire departments do have career communications staff with designated PIO's. South Metro is among the few that have a KZbin channel featuring vlogs hosted by PIO's.

One of these days on your vlog, can you talk about your auto aid and mutual aid with departments around SMFR? Can SMFR dispatch tone those departments like West Metro and Aurora for calls or does the dispatcher have to call them and request them to respond? Just curious since you see many responses helping SMFR, and seeing the call in Pulse Point. Thanks in advance
@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your interest and suggestion! SMFR has CAD to CAD capability with West Metro, both fire districts can automatically dispatch automatic aid resources and share MDC data. Currently, SMFR does not share that capability with any of the other neighboring fire districts. Auto and mutual aid requests are phoned in by the dispatch centers, they check the status of the unit(s) needed and dispatch them if they're available.

@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO Жыл бұрын
One of the big reasons SMFR is purchasing a Tiller, which will have a 300 gallon water tank, pump and attack lines, is combine the equipment from the Heavy Rescue with the Ladder Company. This will allow Tiller 34 to respond as an aerial and or heavy rescue as needed without the need to cross-staff a specialty apparatus. Both Tower 34 and Rescue 34 were due for replacement in the next couple years so there's a cost savings in purchasing only one apparatus instead of two.
@eriksand9262 Жыл бұрын
@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO smart move! I currently live in a city that seems a little spoiled with their budget. All engines and trucks have 4 man crews. They have a fully staffed heavy rescue unit. Eric, Do SM PIO’s often run code 3 for calls? Or is it rare? Is this something that SMFR allows y’all to do?
@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO Жыл бұрын
Staff Chiefs, additional Safety Officers, Fire Investigators, Incident Dispatchers, and PIO's don't respond emergent very often, but policy does allow it. Those units will initially respond non-emergent unless upgraded by Incident Commander/Officer, or the incident warrants and justifies their immediate/emergent response or involvement. Most commonly emergency lighting/sirens are used when approaching a closed road or traveling through an incident scene.

Does the PIO help with firefighting or anything? I wonder why they go to calls with code 3. Never seen anything like that here in Holland as a volunteer
@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO Жыл бұрын
At South Metro, support personnel including Incident Dispatchers, Fire Investigators and Public Information Officers have vehicles that are code 3 capable. By policy, those resources respond non-emergent unless their immediate involvement justifies an emergent response, or the incident commander requests an emergent response. Support staff almost always respond non-emergent but routinely activate their lights/sirens when accessing controlled scenes. In this video example, an emergent mode was used to follow an Engine Company through a closed intersection, rather than sit in traffic just outside the scene for an extended time while traffic was diverted.

I'm curious, are PIOs working the scene too? In wondering why they have lights and sirens just to take photographs and video of a scene to relay to media..... I apologize if my question seemed out of line.
@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO Жыл бұрын
SMFR allows support personnel which include Incident Dispatch Team, Fire Investigators and PIO's to respond emergent if the incident warrants or justifies it, or if the incident command wants their expertise on scene in an emergent manner. Usually the extent of activating lights and sirens is just to get on scene when traffic is stopped due to a roadblock, like University Blvd. during the house fire in this video.

3 questions, 1 is there plans to replace the older pierce dash engines such as engines 11, and engine 15? Because they are getting old. 2 did Eric get a new PIO car? Because on 5280fire it says he has a 2020 ford expedition. And finally number 3 why is ARM 37 (Advanced Resource Medic) no longer in service? And also is it a different type of unit or is it at a different department?

Q1, Yes E11 & E15 along with E31 are up for replacement and should get engines similar to E23, the order in which apparatus get replaced is based on needs, miles/pump-hours & age which for suppression units is generally around 10years (speciality units 20years). Q2, yes he got a 2020 Ford Expedition, his old F150 went to welfare team. Q3, ARM37 was moved to headquarters and responds from there, you won’t see it on PulsePoint.

@@Autofleet4429how do you know all this?

@autofleet4429 Is dialed in! There are 4 new Engines in the next replacement order but exactly where they will be assigned hasn't been determined. Aside from vehicle age, condition and mileage are also factors in replacement. Operationally, E22 is the only front line Engine with a 500 gallon water tank, so it's possible they might get a newer apparatus with more water. Yes, Eric was assigned to a 2020 Ford Expedition. ARM37 is out of service and the Advanced Resource Medic program has been disbanded. ARM37 is now "Public Health 10" based at Headquarters with a Paramedic and Community Health Clinician. We'll share more information about that change soon.

@SouthMetroFireRescuePIO Жыл бұрын
We're scheduling that with Station 44 right now, so it'll probably be up in a couple weeks.

Hello - South Metro Fire Rescue centennial Colorado. First I just wanted to say I hope everyone was ok at Station 33 has the roof got fixed yet just wondering. I just wanted to ask a few questions 1. Is there any chance that you could please do a day in the life as a firefighter at station 44 please. 2. Is there any chance that you could please do more of the day in the life of something please. 3. Is there any chance that you could please make videos of the Fire Medics please. 4. I was just wondering what is your newest fire apparatus on your fleet except for the airport fire truck. Hopefully you could please answer these questions for me and please get back with me about the questions please. Thanks

Thank you for all of your suggestions! We do have more Day in the Life videos and Fire Medics planned. The airport trucks are still the newest in-service vehicles, Brush 33 and Brush 43 will probably be the next ones.
