There’s multiple iterations of Johnny’s Malorian Arms 3516 throughout the lore, even one that would shoot rounds that are equivalent to .577 Nitro Express. Not sure which version of the Malorian we’re seeing in the game but it’s certainly not shooting anything nearly that large.

You can decide two different firemodes for SKIPPY. Either target heads exclusively or knees exclusively. After killing certain amount of people, SKIPPY tells you that you are a monster (either because you're a psychotic mass murderer, or because you enjoy crippling people) and permanently changes it's fire mode.

Correct, this is important to know. If you were to pick Stone Cold Killer, you will eventually lose that. Which is why it's preferred to pick Puppy Loving Pacifist first, as Skippy will change to Stone Cold Killer after you get about 50 kills with it. There is also a small quest to return Skippy if you want, but it's not recommended. The reward you get for doing that is small, and you lose Skippy as well. Edit: Not less important to know, but if you refuse to take Skippy back to its original owner, all it’s dialogue changes to “BAD USER”. This can be avoided by agreeing to give Skippy back, but leaving the quest as incomplete.

My first and third playthroughs, Skippy was near useless because I wasn't specced for it (first playthrough I specced into assault weapons, third into shotguns/LMGs. Didn't even have a smartlink that time) so I was happy to get rid of Skippy for any reward- plus, as Johnny S said, happy Regina. My second playthrough on the other hand, I was primarily focused on stealth and quickhacking and used pistols almost exclusively when I did have to fight, so Skippy was GREAT.

My favourite game to play was "SKIPPY roulette" when I used it. Simply knock out every enemy in the area using non lethal weapons and then take SKIPPY and aim at their head. Most would survive but a few would experience "accidental discharge". Although I guess if you used skippy as a main weapon rather than a sidearm, I could definitely see him being infuriating

The DR-12 Quasar is not a conventional firearm, it's one of the so-called "tech weapons" iirc. In other words, a rail gun or gauss gun.

Also, its ammo is little birdshot pellets according to the in game tv show where they discuss the gun. I think that would explain why the angle of the cylinder doesn’t interfere with feeding the shots through the barrel, but the fact that a little round pellet can get sent through solid walls means the ammo is really carrying a lot of force when it gets charged.

A nice touch is that you can see the gun is made of stamped aluminum halves like a WW2 mass production gun. Despite being high tech it's very cheaply made.

I always liked the weapon design in Cyberpunk 2077. You can sort of see what they were inspired by (if not completely made up), while also having that dark future touch to it. It's also pretty cool seeing the differences between the weapons that gangsters use in comparison to the corporate militaries, which was a nice touch.

The guns are not made up, they all come from the Cyberpunk source material, the only thing that is original, somewhat, is their designs, but then, they were inspired by the writer of the Cyberpunk sourcebook. Originally, CDPR went with something more futuristic and clean, like space weapons.

I never remember the names of the guns in games, but I do know the real life guns they mimic, and I kinda understand how some work, just not sure how feasible in our time, like Skippy loads like a stapler, there is no shell casing. If watch Skippy the forward part reciprocate but only slightly. As if to drop the round down. Sorta like a P90. Then their is the budget tech, it is is a direct mash of a p90 with an mp5a1, same magazine, same stock, and even the slap bolt. But the design of the p90. I love the train of thought for cyberpunk gun design. Fantasy but based on reality and future workability.

You may (may not) be interested to know that some of the “functional” weapons were designed and concepted by Rmory Studios in Germany. They are lead by a ex-military guys and pride themselves on designing weapons that have an air of “believable” to them.

It makes sense for the Malorian Arms 3516 (Johnny Silverhand's gun, the first one in the video) to have 20th century sights. After all, it's a gun from all the way back in 2020, and it was probably made to order years before the events of the Arasaka Tower bombing. So contrary to common sense, the sights are not that anachronistic. The flamethrower attachment on the other hand... yeah.

For that weird backwards slanted revolver, if I remember correctly it's supposed to be a rail gun of some sort, so it's possible that the angle doesn't matter too much because the rounds are magnetically pulled out of the cylinder.

The "swarm of bees" is what's called a "smart" weapon, basically it's a bullet version of the technology used by various air forces where your munitions are linked to a HUD, and wherever you are looking is where the shot's going to go. It's hilarious with the SMG and rifle versions when you score like 20-30 headshots...in like two seconds. 🤣

Smart munitions have to be either wildly better than a competently aimed standard projectile or they need to be as reliable and cheap. It's the reason that the colt 1911 isn't significantly different and still used today even though the design is well over 100 years old.

The Palica Smart Shotgun and its big brother the L-69 Zhuo are clearly based on the metal storm electrically fired ammo system. That's why you drop in a new barrel - the barrel has all the rounds stacked in it as a sealed and replaceable unit.

14:00 that pistol reads to me (as someone who has not played cyberpunk) as something akin to a swappable revolver cylinder rather than a magazine. It rotates to position the next round to the barrel and the angle they're at is consistent around the circle so that the "cylinder" can be more compact overall by having a chambered edge along the front thus decreasing the amount of cutaway needed from the gun frame to allow this unique operation while maintaining as much firearm rigidity as possible

I'm kind of curious about Jonathan's campaign against iron sights in future settings. I'd think that ironsights will never be obsolete because they are foolproof. Anything more complicated than a notch or a small sticking metal part is prone to malfunction. You can't "break" ironsights ( at least without some force that probably would be deadly to a gun wielder)

Well, to be fair, it looks like a bit was edited out when he says "well, maybe not no more ironsights," which makes me think he qualified what he meant but it was cut out. I'm guessing what he said was along the lines of "ironsights will always be there, but red-dots and similar will soon be included as standard with all factory-produced pistols, because the advantage they provide the user far outweighs the cost and risk of failure." Just guessing, though. I do think it's the logical progression for pistol development, though. They're pretty much standard in competition shooting, so I suspect in a couple of decades they'll be rugged enough for regular military/law enforcement use.

They have red dots in CP2077, they just cost extra but almost every gun can mount them with minimal effort. If you're a serious professional though you get cyber eyes and a grip, the red dot is virtual and you can see your ammo count etc. Iron sights are mostly for the poors. (lots of poors in CP2077, thanks Corporations...)

The DR-12 Quasar seesm to be a railgun. The reloading only adds new projectiles, but have no propellant. This makes sense with its name "Quasar" that ist an event that produces a lot of electromagnetic radiation, and makes sense in gameplay, as you can "charge" it to make it shoot faster.

It isn't new at all, it just took a long time to have the ability to deliver enough power and they will equal and surpass current firearms eventually, once we have batteries that can hold enough power... that is quite literally the only thing holding us back... energy storage, because they require a LOT of power.

If my memory serves right, there is an in-game ad for thr Pulsar pistol (bullpup pistol) that explains that the ammunition are actually BB-gun like pellets that are just sent at high speeds with the techy railgun system it has on board. I don't think there is any propellent at all there? The R&D for the pistol took one look at the F=MA equation, and generated all the force from the acceleration jaja

One of the first things I do when I load up a new save is go and get Skippy. That's how you level up reflexes and pistol capabilities fast and easy. Turning him in is the last thing I do before meeting Hanako for the final main story mission.

The last gun shown in the video is what the game calls a Tech Precision Rifle, powerful, mid ranged weapon whose best feature they didn't show you, which is that its sight allows the user to see heat through solid objects, so you can see if enemies are on the other sides of walls or behind obstacles and the rifle shoots (supposedly) with such force it can shoot through those objects. From a game standpoint its a cool weapon :)

Jon: If you look at the ammo counter when using the secondary attack "flamethrower" mode the round count goes down. I haven't read any canon on it, but it coincides with using the gun as a pistol whip/club. My assumption is that it was somehow grenading the round at the muzzle. That attack has zero range, only works in concert with melee. Hence I never regard it is a flamethrower or projectile attack.

Speaking from memory the Quasar is supposed to be magnetic - with an action more in common with cylinder mag airguns than a conventional firearm. Also, there *is* a series of bullpup pistols that were marketed - see Ian's video on the Boberg XR9S and XR45S (also apparently rebranded the Bond Arms Bullpup Pistol after a company sale). Also on the Malorian Arms gun, I found the rotating action interesting - I thought it might imply another semi-bullpup action where it would have 2 chambers, pulling a round off the mag on one part of the cycle, and loading it on the other.

I see the future of red dots differently than Jonathan. I see them more as video game style reticles project on a set of glasses the shooter wears from a camera on the weapon . That way you don't have to get the gun up in a shooting position. And the camera would allow you to stick just your hand around a corner and make an accurate shoot from safety.

For Jonathan to understand: Smart weapons are connected to a Chyron in a cybereye (Replacing your actual eye) and a Targeting scope built into the Cybereye as well, allows the use of Smart ammunition that when locked on to a target, act like homing rounds.

Some of these guns have one design aspect to them that I haven't really seen in modern firearms: It's a vertical shell around a functional core. Or to me it looks like one. You see in first person how it has a seam running down the center of it, much like a jerrycan. My assumption is that it has a sceletonized core or a functional firearm unit, that gets put into a clamshell chassis. In a way kind of like the G11 where it's mostly just a plastic box that a gun is put into. Might be the "budget" way to do it. The only precision machined parts need to be in the functional core, the shell can be very cheap and sloppy as opposed to most modern firearms where the shell is the receiver and it has to be or house components critical for reliable operation. We see shells in modern firearms or designs that function similarly but they are all generally tubes or split horizontally into upper and lower receivers. Vertical clamshells are something I don't think anyone has really done other then germans in WW2.

The first gun, the Malorian Arms 3516, was a custom pistol commissioned by Johnny Silverhand itself. After multiple iterations, the creator finally created that version which Johnny was very impressed with. The gun represents Johnny as a person: flashy displays, a powerful bite, and a sleek silver finish. That gun and Her Majesty from Phantom Liberty are my favourite guns simply because of their style; I use the Malorian for loud, chaos-inducing gunfights and Her Majesty when I need to just activate active camo and take out enemies without them even knowing I was there.

Randomly finding Skippy while exploring the city is probably my favorite part in all of Cyberpunk 2077. Skippy is like a messed up Clippy that gets off on you killing people with it, and it's hilarious. I refused to use any other gun for the longest time, though it sadly becomes obsolete fairly soon when you find guns with much higher DPS.

Fun fact about Johnny's gun: the Malorian Arms 3516 was custom built specifically for him by the owner & founder of Malorian Arms and was machined in Outer Space so that there were no imperfections in its creation. In CP2020 its described as a 14mm "very heavy pistol", but by CP2077 it can supposedly change ammo type on the fly.
