Fireball 500 is a 1966 stock car racing film, blended with the beach party film genre. A vehicle for stars Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, and Fabian, it was one of a string of similar racing films from the 1960s. Written by William Asher and Leo Townsend, and directed by William Asher, it tells the story of Dave Owens (Avalon), a stock car racer forced to run moonshine.

Sandy Reed, the announcer was a close friend of my Dad's. They shared an office together in the 60s on Wilshire Blvd. Sandy was one of the funniest men, I've ever known. He was the mainstay announcer at Riverside Raceway and did some gigs at Ascot Park and other venues around Southern California. He died a few years ago, but he sure knew how to have fun. He also liked to prank the spectators from the announcer's booth. It looked like they used a lot of stock footage from real NASCAR races. Frankie Avalon's car was a dead ringer for Richard Petty's No. 43 Plymouth. Petty was winning everything in sight those days, so it would make sense that the movie's hero would drive his car. Petty was also known for that blue. We used to call it 'Petty Blue.'
